And now this. If it's true Obama had pledged to veto this one then SOPA will probably be signed even easier.

    Pretty scary stuff if true. <_<;

      What the FUCK Obama?

... wow. Just, wow. I don't know what to say to that. He's the last guy I would have figured to sign something that blazenly oppressive into law, sweet Christ.

And this isn't a movie or anything like that.

        But it wouldn't really matter much if it wasn't because both your country and mine will probably be directly affected by these things. <_<;

So...Happy new year North America? o_O

Where have you been? He's been continuing the damage done by Clinton and Bush ever since he took office. He's also gotten his cronies so quick to play the race card when he gets criticized for anything. He's never wanted people speaking against him.

Not that I put all that much stock in Alex Jones' tinfoil material, but this certainly him being legit on this matter.

Re: SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) / Is this for real?

While others are kind of of backing out of SOPA support publicly and instead just supporting the ESA's support, Capcom has come out to directly endorse SOPA.

At the very least this resolves my DS purchases for February. As much as I'd like to get politically active as a gamer on the issue SOPA won't live past the Supreme Court. Gamers really just need to get together and bring one -and only one - publisher to its knees

I think EA, Sony and Capcom are the most practical targets, just speaking from the fiscal quarter we're sitting in. I think we know even though Sony's games division side and EA backed off into neutral territority, they're so invested in Hollywood that they're not entirely neutral. Hell, for the rest of Sony, SOPA is what they've been working for the last 14 years on all ftonts. EA continues to be just plain consumer-hostile. Capcom just seems to have made one lousy descision after another these last two years.

Capcom stands to lose $90 in new purchases from me this quarter. What if everyone backed out of RE: Revelations and SFxT? They're not games I really, really need, just ones that would be nice to have. As far as EA goes, i'm not going to punish the third parties they publish for, but fuck Mass Effect 3 and anything internally from EA.

The Last Guardian will be my last Sony game. PS3 is the last Sony hardware I will buy new, PSP the last Sony handheld. Sony's just become so detached - mostly the fault of the whole company more than the games division, but still - and its just not tolerable for me anymore.

Capcom will probably get wise and start backing off. I think they didn't exactly need to start this year with more bad PR. Maybe sales on their first two big games tanking would be enough to humble them. I mean, its not like they can blame sluggish 3DS sales now that its sold several million units. I wanted MGS3D and Kid Icarus more anyway.

Man, I just feel sorry for Seth Killian. He's Capcom USA's community manager and a genuinely good person. Yet he takes all the heat for the dumb shit people over him do.

Re: SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) / Is this for real?

Yeah, it's settled it for me too. No more Capcom games for me and it really seems this generation will be the last I buy a console for.

EA can go to hell, I will not buy ANYTHING that has their logo, including games like The Secret World. I don't care if EA is just a publisher (if that's actually true) I want nothing to do with them anymore. And Sony wont get any more money from me either, which is sad considering I was interested in buying some stuff from them in he near future (like a new cellphone), but then again that's what competitors are for.

Re: SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) / Is this for real?

Is that really hard when you weren't buying games from most of them anyway.

I really don't see the merit in punishing third parties that get published through another third party that's directly in bed with the ESA.

Grasshopper is against SOPA. Fully against, but they're partnered with Warner Bros for Lollipop Chainsaw. What do I gain from punishing one of the most creatively brilliant studios out there? The same can be said for Kingdoms of Amalur, which is not made and just published by EA. The guy that helped make Morrowind and Oblivion is heading that one up and this is a new IP from a new studio just getting started. Seems harsh to just slap them down for associating with EA, it might not have even been their choice, but that of their owners.

I just want to stick it to the biggest offenders. They are the ones that need to be brought to their knees and broken. Eidos is finding its legs again, Nintendo probably doesn't even know why the fuck they're there. A lot of the people on the development side in all these companies are not really getting a say in this, the boardrooms are and they're naturally fearful and looking to protect their own asses.

I don't think its Iwata or Reggie Fils Amie endorsing this, but Nintendo's shareholders. I can't say it as confidently for Sony as a whole as their holy war against piracy is long running and well-documented. Sony is Hollywood and its really Hollywood that is the biggest supporter of this bill on the whole. Hollywood is an industry running scared right now, being reappropriated into streaming services and TV networks struggling for ad revenue. They're used to getting that big lump sum upfront and how it comes to them in tiny bits. They literally fear things like YouTube and Redbox cutting into the traditional business model. They only pretend to embrace it.

Blockbuster wouldn't be trickling out rental vending machines now if they didn't have to.

Since they can't have things the old way, they'll punish the new way as much as they can.

Copyright law and Licensing law are really what's at issue here. They are old, decrepit little laws that are desperately being applied in a world where they have lost their relevance. They need to be redefined to embrace social media and digital distribution in a way that is beneficial to both parties. You can't treak a digital product like a physical product. You can't hide your movie, book, game or TV show from review from the general public. Its not the 80s anymore - if your game is shit, I'm gonna know well before I go to Gamestop.

Don't like it? Withdraw your shares and go live in denial, make room for a generation that gets it. Enjoy your newspapers and physical media while it lasts and scowl at your kids for using an iPad if you want.

Re: SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) / Is this for real?

I was kinda surprised when I counted the games I was going to buy from these western publishers combined. But I seriously doubt 400-ish bucks will affect them much. XD

ESA is an association, and if companies were really against SOPA/PIPA they would withdraw from it instead of using it as a shield to deflect heat. So if they wont drop from ESA they just wont get any money from me. Simple as that.

Now here's the thing about publishers, they are mostly regional. So you can still support good studios by buying their games without feeding the SOPA supporters. In the case of Lollipop Chainsaw it published by Kadokawa in Japan, so if I decide to buy that game I'll just get the Japanese version instead of the NA version (which I was actually going to buy considering it had english voices anyway.) Same with other games in the same situation, if I really want them I'll just buy them from a publisher from another region if available.

PS > But hopefully they wake up and see that this will cost them way more money than piracy ever has. They also need to see that DRM-removal tools are being distributed by their SOPA partners themselves, not some evil foreign Pirate operating from a remote island.

the piracy stuff is immense, mew!

From Fantasy to Fansubs: How Pirating Went Mainstream

and the thing is people won't act responsibly since those pirates and the pirate supporters get things for free.

I don't know what SOPA means but that won't fix the issue, it would be like releasing a firestorm or something.

                          EA is just too funny.

Oh EA, if you didn't have DICE or Visceral under your thumb...

And as if I needed more reasons to hate Capcom. Honestly though, looking at that list I have to say I'm genuinely mystified that Activision Blizzard isn't on that list. Of all the companies out there you'd think they'd be top of the damned list (and not just alphabetically )

I'm very disappointed in all the companies on that list. However, that's pretty much every major publisher who's games I like. Makes for a rather unpleasant paradox

As for Obama, I maintain he's been doing a good job and contrary to popular belief, he has done a lot of good and come through on most of his promises. The NDAA is just a rather glaring misstep that continues to baffle me. But this is about SOPA, and the supreme bullshit that will inevitably follow it. I'm not one to normally support the ridiculous argument of precedents, but this really will in all likelihood set off a global chain reaction of sorts.

Hell, look at China - they're already banning American TV programs now that were previously the favorites of many Chinese citizens (saw it on Fareed Zakaria GPS yesterday). It's not related to SOPA (pretty sure anyway) but I just wanted to point that out as an example of the kind of nonsense that could follow in the wake of this. And as The Amazing Athiest pointed out in one of his videos, all this is going to do is force people to learn how to get around this, and generate more underground sites than before.

In otherwords, it won't really do shit except make things difficult for the honest folks and piss off everyone in the process. Kinda like the early days in FFXI when Tanaka was still getting the hang of combating RMT...

Anyone could have drawn that conclusion. I don't think anyone needed a screaming jackass to explain it unless they were watching in hopes that he might have a stroke.

That aside, I tried to imagine what the internet would be like were SOPA to be enforced to the fullest extent it could be.

I realized it would turn all of the internet into NPR.

Now there's a future I don't want to live in. I'd rather have the future of DX;HR.
