Re: Official Unofficial Bugs, Thoughts, and Suggestions
Your account was banned though so your motivation to return is considerably diminished compared to the average player. Very few people this far along in FFXI's life would entertain starting at level 1 again.

Re: Official Unofficial Bugs, Thoughts, and Suggestions
Bullshit. I know plenty of people who quit and never looked back. I am one of those people. While thoughts of picking it up again have crept into my mind, the rational part of my brain that reminds me how "unfun" the game was by the time I quit keeps me in perspective. Take your rose colored glasses off for a minute and view the world the way the rest of us see it. It's the same reason you don't keep going back to an ex. You may have had great sex and a lot of fun going to movies and bars together, but underneath all of that superficial crap, there were far deeper issues plaguing the relationship and causing it to go toxic. And underneath all of the great sex and fun times you may think of when you're tempted to go back, you realize that those are just a cover up for the fact that you were not truly happy with this person, and that breaking up was the better option.Originally posted by jenova_9 View PostPeople that quit FFXI always go back (at least 1-5 times. )
Again, though, I've said that FFXI players are like abused spouses, many of them just keep on going back and taking the crap. Many do manage to pull away, but equally as many come back month after month believing in all the promises SE keeps lavishing them with.
I can say that yes, I've been tempted to go back, sure. But underneath all of the fun of leveling my DNC in my spare time, there were still a lot of things that were making the game feel more like work than a game. And honestly, if a game is going to feel like work, then why the hell am I the one paying to play? They should be paying me. XD

Re: Official Unofficial Bugs, Thoughts, and Suggestions
A beta is just that, a beta. It doesn't reflect the finished product in any way, shape, or form. Square-Enix are the masters of hype, so I wouldn't put it past them that they're using this open beta to showcase a small portion of the game while they hold back on what content they're developing during it. They still have internal testers that are picking through every single thing that comes across their desks, as well as the developers that pump out the content for the testers to test. Look at the patch notes, they're all fixes for server stability. They're just stress testing their servers.Originally posted by Neomage View PostThat's the problem. All MMOs are typically buggy at launch, but there are certain expectations across the genre. If a game doesn't meet these, it suffers a huge loss of players early on, which in turn reduces the resources SE would have to spend on improving the game. Even if the problems are fixed later, most MMOs that didn't quite cut it at launch never fully recover.
As I said before, I want FFXIV to succeed. It has some nice innovative concepts and at least partially breaks away from the WoW-clone mold(and we certainly don't need some of those), but the game is far too underdeveloped for a launch. What the game currently exhibits is what I would expect from an early beta, not what the open beta should run like two weeks before launch.
On an unrelated note, the introductions for the three different cities kind of suck. Ul'dah, specifically, because those goobbue were complete badasses until after the cutscene, at which point they become dosile deer eating out of the player's hand. I can see where maybe the Aurelia aren't that powerful, but the wolves in Gridania should be a lot more menacing as well. I don't think the NPCs that stand around really help, either.

Pay-for-Beta.Originally posted by Yellow Mage View PostThe 22nd marks the start of the More Open Beta.
That always made me laugh with Vanguard. While Alpha and Beta testing there were massive concerns with all aspects of the game and the usual fanbois would say, "It's only Alpha/Beta, the final patch before launch will sort it all out". They said the same tired old crap right up to the point it launched and then during the first few weeks of the game going live when the chat channels were full of people complaining about bugs and shitty performance the same morons had the nerve to spew, "Don't complain! You should bug report it as the players are responsible for helping the developers fix the game..."
That game taught many people, myself included, to temper their optimism with new MMOs. Since that gaming Titanic launched there've been more than a few others that've followed in its wake and FFXIV would appear to be sailing towards the same iceberg.

I'll play it because I've played every other Final Fantasy. This one isn't slipping through my grasp! >:O

Re: Official Unofficial Bugs, Thoughts, and Suggestions
Remember, XI was out in Japan before it came to NA. So what we seen in NA wasn't necessarily what the JP seen when it first launched.
I imported, but I can't remember specifics.

Re: Official Unofficial Bugs, Thoughts, and Suggestions
i don't know. after some levequests and partying tonight (~1-2 hours), i thought it was fun, but it was also buggy. i kept attacking targets, only to have all of my attacks stop working, with the mob still able to hit me. that kinda sucked. other than that though, i had a great time. i think the i5 + gtx 470 is a good combo.

Re: Official Unofficial Bugs, Thoughts, and Suggestions
Yeah, I don't think I will be playing come the 22nd. It's more of a combination of events going on in my life (including, among others, college starting, meaning I don't have as much free time as I used to) than just problems with the game, but apart from the nice graphics and the guildleaves(which are probably my favorite thing ever) this just seems like another version of FFXI with clunkier controls. It sucks, because you know, I want SE to succeed. I even have a couple thousand dollars of stock invested with them. The problem is, this game really needs more development.
I think they should push the release back a couple months, or even back to the PS3 release. It might be quite a bit too late for that, with the Open Beta and all.

A prime example of SE's love for being retarded, is this weeks FFXI version update that is just now addressing issues we brought to their attention years ago. (Hi2u blue spell memory.)

Re: Official Unofficial Bugs, Thoughts, and Suggestions
Off topic, but was this image really that big? I mean, if you're looking at 800x600 resolution maybe, but who the hell uses that resolution anymore? It isn't even big enough to break the tables of the forum on my screen. Not really trying to start anything, but TGM seems to be the only person who cares about large images. XDOriginally posted by Durahansolo View PostLarge picture, needs spoiler tags
I don't read that language SE... Apparently it had something to do with my armor needing repaired, but after I got it repaired by the NPC it didn't go away. So I am wondering if that has something to do with the fatigue system. Before I logged off, it turned into a red color and said "Heavy Damage".
On topic, I'm not gaining any faith in this game being any good. I have been kind of looking forward to it as something I will eventually play ... that said, I'm not sure the expense (new computer, game itself, monthly fee) is going to be worth it after a lot of the things I've read here.
Also, I have to laugh at someone coming into a thread meant for complaining about bugs and whatnot and telling us, "NO GUYZ IT'S OK SE WILL FIX IT U DUNNO WUT UR TALKING ABOUT." Sorry, don't buy that, either. Like TGM said, SE has a history of doing things their own way and telling us to shut up and like it anyway. And unfortunately, the only way SE is going to learn to listen to their playerbase is if people QUIT. In droves. None of this FFXI crap, "Well, it's not perfect, but it's a Final Fantasy game and I like it anyway." None of this, "But I've put so much work in already, maybemaybemaybe they'll fix it!" Players need to speak up the only way SE understands - quit the game and cancel their fees. But as long as people continue to pay, SE can continue to abuse their customers because, in their eyes, "They're paying for it, so they must like it." Bullshit. FFXI players are like abused wives.
Maybe it will change, I don't know. I doubt it. But if SE doesn't listen to their playerbase when it comes to fixing major issues, I won't even bother with this game.

Alright, I agree with your and GM's points. I guess I'm just looking forward to this so much that I'm willing to accept a less-than-optimal first 6 months.
