Re: New Class - Lancer and New Mobs
well with Lancer being revealed so early, it's time to celebrate. I thought there wasn't gonna be any more new media until the beta.
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IHvWS9Sre4"]YouTube - The Dissidia Cast dances to "The Extreme" from FFVIII[/ame]
although I will save the real celebration when Ninja is confirmed.
I think with the FFXIV class system, people can be multiple things and still be effective.

Re: New Class - Lancer and New Mobs
If the game doesn't let you do that then you can A) find another game or B) be content with other weapons. What if you want to dual wield swords and a have a bow for ranged attacks?

Re: New Class - Lancer and New Mobs
Gladiator has a ranged sword technique, although it's obviously unknown at what level he gets it.Maybe they have incorporated weapon specific ranged attacks into the melee-based classes for things like pulling and given the Archer the ability to fire at point blank range. That's assuming no two weapons share abilities, which may not be true.Weapon = Job in FFXIV.
therefore you'll need a spear equipped to use Jump if Lancer has it.

Jumping while using DNC was fun in FFXI although not that effective.

Re: New Class - Lancer and New Mobs
My point was, in FFXI you can equip a ranged weapon and a melee weapon simultaneously. From the info released so far the Archer appears to be missing any melee weapon, the Lancer presumably is restricted to polearm only. Maybe they have incorporated weapon specific ranged attacks into the melee-based classes for things like pulling and given the Archer the ability to fire at point blank range. I can't remember too much from the various video footages, other than someone with a sword maniacally chasing fat fluffy chickens around.Originally posted by Armando View PostDoesn't seem much more one-dimensional than FFXI classes, in which only 1 weapon is useful, 2 if you're really lucky (but odds are you can still get away with just 1),

Re: New Class - Lancer and New Mobs
(02:20:16 PM) febaen: what I'm saying is that pets might be independent of jobs
(02:20:45 PM) febaen: more like FENRIR, I CHOOSE YOU, less like wrrrrrrrr wrrrrrrr fzzzzzzzzzz ok now my job is useless since he's out.
(02:20:55 PM) febaen: more like NPCs
(02:21:17 PM) febaen: more like something that is bound to your character as a pet/ally/assistant/worshipper/slave etc.
(02:21:31 PM) febaen: less like a function of the JOB
(02:21:32 PM) Armando: That could be the case, if they decide to implement pets somewhere down the line.
(02:21:39 PM) Armando: But to me Jump is the more defining DRG trait.
(02:21:41 PM) febaen: Or they could implement pets AT LAUNCH
(02:21:47 PM) febaen: and still be technically correct about not having pet jobs
(02:21:55 PM) Armando: That's true.
(02:22:05 PM) febaen: because they could be trying to avoid pet jobs PERIOD, making all pets/etc. cross-weaopn
(02:22:48 PM) febaen: and yeah, exactly, what if Jump is granted by having a Dragon-family pet (maybe of a certain levle/rank/etc.) instead of the lance?
(02:23:05 PM) febaen: you have LANCERS as a JOB CLASS, and DRAGOON as a playstyle, or the like
(02:23:19 PM) Armando: Well that's what I was hinting at. The Lancer isn't necessarily a DRG.
(02:23:31 PM) febaen: you can be either without ever being the other, or you can be both
(02:24:06 PM) febaen: No 'oh-level-up-lance-then-jump-with-your-knife-because-learning-to-swing-a-spear-will-clearly-help-you-jump-higher-lol' bullshit
in which Feba and Armando win the thread.

Re: New Class - Lancer and New Mobs
All this talk about Jobs, Classes, and Skill Inheritance is making me want to go play FF Tactics.

Re: New Class - Lancer and New Mobs
But it's DRG-specific in XI, subjob inheritance aside. The equivalent for XIV would be non-lance-specific, since equipping a lance should turn you into a lancer which people are trying to equate to a DRG. Unless they have some sort of mix-and-match system in place, but they haven't given us hints for that yet.

Re: New Class - Lancer and New Mobs
Jump was not spear specific as of FFVI, technically.
Relics and all that.

Jump is already not-spear-specific as of FFXI.

Re: New Class - Lancer and New Mobs
Yeah, they talked in one of the interviews how players could set skills to take on a tanking role if needed, which seems to imply skills you learn from equipping one weapon can transfer over to another job with another weapon. I don't think the game will be lacking in diverse skills for jobs, it will just be a matter of doing things differently from the subjob system.
Set skill systems can be both restrictive and robust, it all depends on what skill slots can be allocated for and if they have a particular cost to set. They start out really restrictive, but open up to some great possibilities over time. Final Fantasy Tactics and SMT games prove this rather well.

Re: New Class - Lancer and New Mobs
I'm not saying it can't happen; I'm saying it seems foolish to assume that, when they've explicitly stated they're avoiding the typical FF jobs. They could make a Lancer that doesn't make use of Jumps, or they could make Jump something that's not spear-specific.Originally posted by FebaI see no reason why a Lancer couldn't befriend a wyvern later on; either become a dragoon (hi2u white wizard class), or simply as a side quest.Doesn't seem much more one-dimensional than FFXI classes, in which only 1 weapon is useful, 2 if you're really lucky (but odds are you can still get away with just 1), and everyone's cast in the same mold. They've at least hinted that you can pick out skills for your character to some extent, which is a big step up.Originally posted by GrizzlebeardThe more I think about it the less I like the idea of a weapon shaping a role. I mean, in FFXI and other MMOs you have maybe a sword and a bow but from what's been hinted at so far in FFXIV if you equip a bow you'll be an Archer, a sword a shield and you're a Gladiator, a polearm and you're a Lancer. Seems very one dimensional.
