  • New to PUP

This thread-section seems pretty Dead, but ill try anyways.

Im just starting PUP, im lv 3 now. I have read guides and such. They're scattered, and somewhat 'iffy'....

I spent 100k on Automaton parts, still no good startin gear (im wearing event hat, and clothing). Everything but guard skill will be capped prolly till lv 30. But yeah. Im sure I can handle lvl 1-10. But should I do anything special 10-20?. I hate it when ppl are 'crappy' at thier jobs. So I always try to do everything well.

    Any Tips/Advice/Heads-ups would be great.

    Re: New to PUP

The most recommended frame upgrade at 10th is the Ranger 'maton since he's the only one who can skill up ranged attack and avoiding skill-up downtime is always good. You don't need the vast majority of the parts for a while... even without them, you'll outperform most DDs. Once you get into 15-25 you should be considering Tier II parts for at least one of your frames, and shoot for having them all upgraded through all of the crafted II parts by 30. I wouldn't worry about the high-end parts until you're 60th level and can do Pulling the Strings yourself... most sellers charge an arm and a leg for their duplicates.

If you have an alternate, high-level job, you can farm some parts from troll puppetmasters.

You should probably carry a couple types of food:

    An Accuracy Food: Low-level: Jack-o'-Lantern, High-level: Sushi
An Attack Food: Some kind of appropriate meat food

The food that covers both bases is Rice Dumpling. Just be aware that it only provides half as much Accuracy as a pumpkin, and is generally lower in Attack than most meats. They're very nice if you can shoot, but you can't so that's wasted.

Until you get natural Martial Arts from your main, you should probably sub MNK for it. After that WAR sub is nice for enhancing your damage and gives you a Provoke to protect your maton if he draws too much hate. If your maton goes down with a 20 minute timer, you'll be terribly gimp for quite a while--this usually happens if you decide to retool him mid-battle to get better performance (which you will end up doing a lot--it's PUP's coolest ability).

The Harlequin and ValorEdge puppets expose themselves to AoE attacks and are ill-suited to fighting mobs such as goblins especially before you can use oil--the regeneration feature, oil, and stoneskin should keep most of the heat off, but if you're not in range, you don't take damage--Stormwalker or SharpShot frames will keep your maton out of the danger zone. Remember, Barfira won't hit your puppet... You could use a pair of Mana Jammers, but that takes up two slots you could've used for other things.

Make sure your weapon is top-shelf. Your armor, not so much, PUP doesn't get too much face-time with mobs because your personal damage is rather mediocre, just make sure it's at least the highest grade you need. Later on, you'll want to push Accuracy gear which is hard to find.

SE has taken one of the best Mage-melee armors and cut PUP out of the fun even though PUP is the only one who could really find a use for it. That is the Hydra Doublet set, but there are other things you can get:

      OK, cool.

Yeah I plan on taking sharpshot first. And my weapon will prolly be the best I can get. IT is atleast thus far, lol. I think I cant even use anything else till 10 =P.

SO far im subbing /brd. It prolly sounds stupid, But i have been chaining T's from 3-10.

In the low lvls it's all fair game. If /bard works go for it. One option ya could consider (Tho I dunno how well it would work with the SS frame) is to solo past the dunes That's what I did, just to avoid some headaches ><' I used the Valoredge frame but I'm sure the Stormwaker would work well too Aside from that, I agree with everything already mentioned

Yeah im lv 16 now. no one has bitched about /brd. Im guessing they like valor minuet. Im stil tearing it up which is good. Direct DD methods i am getting beat. But the combination of myself and my pups ranged attacks and acruballista probably top the chart. I have some screends but no parse. And if you add in the fact that my /bard presence is influencing the parties attack. I would say i am still valued.

my auto has capped melee, and like 3 pts beloew cap for ranged. I wish he could hold hate though. I didnt buy strobe. But I would like to see his HP bar go down once in awhile.

Anyways, first week.. PUP is fun!
