The reason I say red mage is the best solo is for a few reasons that should be taken into consideration.

1. Red mage will support your two main stats the best. (elemental skill and darkness)
2. You have an excuse not to be the backup healer. (blm backup healer= wasted blm)
3. Still get access to the defensive stoneskin and blink (just like whm sub)
4. The only combo you can solo well (and very well) in the end game lvls.
5. enfeebles will actually stick
6. Gravity

Do you need anymore reasons? Red mage hands down the best sub.

whm sub is like the travel sub, can tele and warp all around the place.

whm is a good sub for lower lvls but after lvl 60ish whm sub can get you into positions of cackup healing though the erase spell is very usefull which you can use at lvl 64.

Still red is far better because it advances more of what you really are as a blm and thats blm related power caster.

I advise you to have both whm and red raised to sub blm. Its very usefull to your having fun to be able to say " I dont want to back up heal, im red sub" though this doesnt mean you shouldnt heal to save a teamplayer when the times are tough cuz the ability to cure is till there. I hope this helps, take it form one who has been there.

Yeah, I'm aware it's a poor choice for general-purpose BLMination. Which is why I said "for straight-up DD," following the discussion of /SMN being okay for the same thing. Probably should have quoted some part of that to give it a little more context.

Yeah, I'm aware it's a poor choice for general-purpose BLMination. Which is why I said "for straight-up DD," following the discussion of /SMN being okay for the same thing. Probably should have quoted some part of that to give it a little more context.

BLM/NIN loses the flexability of /WHM or /RDM, which I like in a BLM, just in case things go wrong, y'know?

For straight-up DD where you don't have to worry about any other role, I've heard NIN can work, too. I've personally only ever seen BLM/NIN once, in my very first Qufim/Delkfutt's party ever, and I was a bit too busy being a panicky newbie WHM to notice whether it was signifciantly better than /WHM or /RDM.

It's all situational. In an experience party, they aren't going to see this as any benefit and you're going to lose out to all of the other blms who are seeking. It might work out in the lower levels, but unless you're staticing with people you know, I would highly doubt you'd see a level 60 blm/nin leveling.

IMO, RDM is the best sub for BLM. Fast Cast, higher INT is worth it.

I know I went 60 levels of BLM with WHM sub, but I never got around to leveling RDM.

My BLM/RDM friend always did better than me in PTs though.

for elvaans, the overall best sub IMO is whm. Greater mp bonus and elvaans have the greatest MND. Moreover, if you chose rdm, meleeing won't become that prevalent once you hit level 40ish.

Edit: then again, elvaans don't have the best intelligence, so RDM wouldn't be bad from the attack aspect. It all depends on which perspective you're looking from.

For Damage Dealing BLM, /SMN is by far the best choice. However, BLMs, though they deal lots of damage, are rarely called on to be 100% DDs. For this reason, it is usually best to sub /RDM, or /WHM if the monster you are fighting smappsstatus.

This is an argument probably better left out, it'll just start a flame war. Let's pretend he said "/SMN is my preference, your opinion may differ" and move on.

BLM/SMN only at level 50/25+, and only when circumstances warrant it (manaburn parties). It's not a good general-use subjob at all. For that, use /WHM or /RDM, depending on what support spells you need.

Yes, but at level 20 BLM you have access to Cure, Poisona and Paralyna, which are nothing to sneeze at (true, probably not imperative, but useful), and at 22 you'll gain access to Cure 2, which is definitely useful. SMN really only gives you an MP and INT boost, which you can easily achieve via gear and food.
