Also, merits only lets you put 6 points in a specific skill even though the category allows 12 (I heard). I was gonna split them 6/6 between gkt and archery.
You can defintely put 8/4 in +weapon skill categories. There are several RNGs running around with 292 Archery skill; that's 269 base + 16 merit + 7 from Hope Torque.

Some people claim that you are limited to 6 in defensive skills (e.g. +evasion skill) but again, I'm skeptical.

Re: Test: Learning WSes through +skill items

        Two problems:

        1) People claim that it's impossible to use quested WS unless your job is listed on the weapon of trials. I have yet to see any proof of this claim, and I tend to be skeptical of it.
This one is the truth. The weaponskill I've attempted to prove this with was Dagger. I levelled THF, opened Evisceration, and merited Dagger 8 times.

I levelled DRK and have 241 Dagger listed in the combat skills menu. The requirement for Evisceration is 230, I am unable to use the skill while on DRK.

        2) Supposing for the sake of argument that you can use quest WS, Empyreal is a 250 WS and SAM's Archery skill caps at 230. Even if you had max Archery merits (skill+16), that puts you 4 short of the necessary skill. You'd need the only +Archery Skill item currently in the game: a Hope Torque.
The test above broke my faith in this actually working =(.

You can defintely put 8/4 in +weapon skill categories. There are several RNGs running around with 292 Archery skill; that's 269 base + 16 merit + 7 from Hope Torque.

        8/8 is the "offensive" skillcap.

        4/4 is the "defensive" skillcap.

A PLD in my linkshell has proven this further by doing triple defensive skills (Evasion, Shield, and Parry) to their 4/4 caps.

Re: Test: Learning WSes through +skill items

Thought I'd post a related incident, for posterity's sake.

So I'm in a party with some 66THF, and I mention Mistral Axe -> Shark Bite as a SC. He says, "THF gets Shark Bite at 67... it's a 230 WS, because I had 225 dagger skill at LV65". My response: "check your WS list"

            ZOMG WTF SHARK BITE

So anyway, this THF is apparently a PLD with 1 dagger merit (hence, the 225 skill @ LV65). A couple of fights in, he expresses astonishment at skilling up and "learning" Shark Bite, as "you can't use WSes until you actually learn them." I inform him that he is incorrect. How do I know? Because I've tested it to death (see: this thread). He proceeds to debate this fact with me, in spite of the fact that HE just had Shark Bite before he "learned" it!

For the record, since PLD dagger skill is C- (220 cap @ LV75), it's impossible for them to reach 225 dagger skill naturally and receive the "<me> learns Shark Bite!" message. So ironically enough, this case is yet another example that proves that you don't need to "learn" a WS in order to be able to use it.

Re: Test: Learning WSes through +skill items

PUP in my LS is always learning the next H2H WS 1-2 levels early because she has a cestus belt and never leveled monk. Its very handy.

Re: Test: Learning WSes through +skill items

                Anyone tested this one?

My nin has 225 sword skill @ 75. My pld is 68 and has 231 sword skill or something (not sure, in class so cant check). If i merited my sword skill to 230+ on nin, could i get sword of trials so my pld can use savage blade at 68?

Nevermind. Just realized sapara of trials doesnt allow nin to equip. owell, war is 70. guess i'll just have to do it with war.

Thank you so much for clearing this crap up.

Had I known, I would of been using Viperbite in Promyvion a long time ago.

Re: Test: Learning WSes through +skill items

I saw this thread and thought... "Maybe I can get Spirit Taker two levels early!" BLM66 staff caps @ 212. Would only need +3 staff skill to use it!

Alas, Staff Belt is activated by a BLM subjob, and Temperance Torque is level 73, where I'd already have Spirit Taker, and I can get Retribution naturally.

But it does enable WHM/BLM to use Spirit Taker at 68... same level as BLM.

Unfortunately, THF can't use VB in 30 cap.

VB is 100 dagger skill WS.
THF dagger skill at LV30 is 93.
At LV30, only 3 levels of merits will be activated (so potentially dagger skill+6), putting you at 99 dagger skill.
The only +dagger skill item at that level is Dagger Belt, which requires THF subjob to activate the latent +skill bonus.
