-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By now the name of Balrahn, great restorer of the Empire of Aht Urhgan, has resounded throughout Vana’diel, reaching the ears of all in the form of both history and legend. Blessed with multifarious talents and gifted in nearly every field of human endeavor, the tales of his exploits and travels have become an undying source of entertainment and delight. The restoration of the reign and dignity of the throne which he ushered in has earned him recognition as the greatest hero that empire has ever known. Though, we would of course be getting ahead of ourselves to posit that his grandeur or regality was on a scale with anything approaching that of our King Ranperre.

During his time on the throne, Balrahn garnered enormous respect amongst the people for his utter lack of interest in the superfluousness of royalty. The magnificent structures, the lush garments, the grand banquets… Rather, Balrahn was obsessed with, and dedicated himself wholeheartedly to, the amassing of rare and powerful weaponry. Indeed, the vast majority of valuable weapons stored in the Imperial armories are from his personal collection. These are weapons heralded to be unparalleled in their artistry in form and efficacy in battle.

However, according to an Imperial spy, the official ledger containing the list of those weapons, though guarded to the utmost and never permitted to pass through the palace gates, was obtained by subversive means and made known to the public. What degree of truth and significance can be ascribed to these entries? Could it possibly be some clever scheme on the part of the Empire to leak false information for its own ends? Or could this truly be an instance of espionage unprecedented in scale throughout history?

But for our purposes here, this is a moot... [Read More]

Changes to Policy Dealing With Unauthorized Access (04/23/2008)
Apr 23, 2008 - 6:06 AM - by Gobo
There has been a recent outbreak of unauthorized third-party access all across the internet. It should not come as a surprise that PlayOnline and FINAL FANTASY XI users have also been targeted and harmed by unauthorized third-party access.
Due to the current situation, the FINAL FANTASY XI development and management teams looked into expanding the policy dealing with unauthorized access for users who have had their accounts accessed by third parties. Today, the new policy and its corresponding support services went into effect.

The primary changes to the policy include the addition of relief measures according to a management team's investigation, a likely increase in support response times, and a larger selection of recovery points for players whose game data has been lost.

In addition to the policy changes, details regarding preventative measures for dealing with unauthorized access and procedures for recovering one's account are also included on the page.

Unauthorized Access

Unauthorized access refers to a third party (someone other than the actual account user) accessing an account without permission and/or using information somehow obtained from the user). This is not only a violation of the PlayOnline User Agreement, but may also be a criminal act in violation of the law.

Even if someone who has had an account accessed by a third party manages to take it back and successfully log in, it is not uncommon for items, gil, or even characters to be altered.

The following guidelines set out preventative measures to safeguard users from unauthorized access, as well as procedures for recovering a user account in the case that it is accessed by a third party.

Preventative Measures Against Unauthorized Access

The following are preventative measures to safeguard users' account information from malicious third parties.

* Do not share your PlayOnline ID or password with anyone, even if you are close friends. Do not keep a paper copy of your PlayOnline ID or password in an easily accessible location. Remember that Square Enix will never ask a customer for their password.
* If you are using a shared computer or any other system that a third party may also use, be sure to use “Guest Login” so that your PlayOnline ID and password are not stored or accessible to other users.
* Do not click on suspicious links when viewing the web. Also, do not use third party, unauthorized “helper” programs, because they could result in account information becoming compromised.... [Read More]

Accounts Banned and STF Report (4/23/08)
Apr 23, 2008 - 5:55 AM - by Gobo
Accounts Banned

Around 7,850 accounts in violation of the FINAL FANTASY XI user agreement were suspended or banned today.

We would like to report the termination today of multiple accounts held by players involved in the usage of third-party tools or cheats, or engaged in RMT (Real Money Trading) activities.

Based on the results of our investigation, around 6,860 PlayOnline accounts were terminated while around 990 accounts were temporarily suspended.
Additionally, we have increased the number of mass bannings against certain PlayOnline violations in order to prevent illegal acts.

Details of the violations are as follows:

- Usage of tools that allow enhanced character movement.
April 1, Approx. 270 cases
April 11, Approx. 350 cases

- Usage of tools that circumvent game mechanics with respect to the timing of ability use, etc. in certain areas or at points where Notorious Monsters appear.
April 23, Approx. 30 cases

- Using cheats to automatically repeat a particular action.
March 26, Approx. 610 cases
April 4, Approx. 560 cases
April 9, Approx. 660 cases
April 16, Approx. 460 cases

- Gil and item exchange for real world money.
Week of March 30, Approx. 250 cases
Week of April 6, Approx. 210 cases
Week of April 13, Approx. 590 cases
Week of April 20, Approx. 630 cases

- Instances of areas or monster monopolization.
March 27, Approx. 190 cases
April 10, Approx. 100 cases

- Usage of synthesis and auction houses for RMT activities.
March 26, Approx. 390 cases
April 1, Approx. 460 cases
April 7, Approx. 600 cases
April 14, Approx. 590 cases
April 21, Approx. 810 cases

- Accounts from people that were previously confirmed to have RMT connections, or that had violated the user agreements but re-subscribed to PlayOnline.
April 16, Approx. 90 cases

The termination of these accounts has led to the removal of approximately 4.1 billion gil from circulation.

We would like to remind players that as well as adversely affecting game balance, the use of third-party tools or cheats can also have consequences that are not immediately obvious, such as introducing damaging viruses, and comprising the security of private account details. Usage of third-party tools will not be tolerated within FINAL FANTASY XI, and we will continue to severely penalize any players found to be in violation of the PlayOnline Member Agreement.

Reminder of Rule #10
Apr 21, 2008 - 6:25 AM - by AKosygin
Given light to recent events, I feel that this is a good reminder of the rules of the site. Particularly, I want to bring to everyone's attention in regards to rule #10, on the subject of appeals:

Quote:
10. Appeals.

You may appeal any actions or decisions (bans, deletes, etc.), made by a moderator or administrator, first to the moderator or administrator that made the action or decision. If you are unsatisfied with their decision, you may appeal to a mod/admin immediately superior to the mod/admin you appealed to until you reached the top administrators. You last and final appeal lies with the top administrator: PiNG. A moderator's or administrator's decision stands until it is "overturned" after an appeal.

However, if you are banned and are unable to contact any admin, you may directly contact an Administrator at their e-mail address. (Please note, jumping directly to PiNG for an appeal will result in your last appeal.)

Current Order of appeals from lowest to highest:
1.) Moderator
2.) Super Moderator
3.) Administrator
4.) PiNG

For a detailed list of hierarchy, click here
NOTE: If a Super Moderator performed the banning action, don't go to a mod, they can't do anything, go up the chain of command, not down. Likewise with an Administrator, don't go to mod or super mod.
As such, if you have a problem with any moderator or administrator, take it to PM, that is what it is for. Posting a rant will not contribute to solve an issue and will only serve to disrupt other discussions.

Thank you for your cooperation,
AKosygin

Feast of Swords
Apr 21, 2008 - 4:11 AM - by Mhurron

FINAL FANTASY XI Official Web Site

http://www.playonline.com/pcd/topics.../3061/3061.jpg

Valiant adventurers of Vana'diel! The time for the Feast of Swords is once again upon us, kupo!
We know things haven't been running too smoothly up until now, kupo... But this year, the Mog House Management Union has a precocious plan that can't possibly fail!
Huh? That's what we said last year, kupo?

Click here to take a peek at our preparations, and see for yourself, kupo!

*The Feast of Swords will be held from 01:00 on April 28 (Monday), 2008 until 01:00 on May 7 (Wednesday), 2008, (PDT).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3, 2, 1... Action, kupo!

Ahem. Dear adventurers, we have a wonderful announcement for you today, kupo!
Get set for an exciting event with whirling wooden weapons and slicing samurai action! That's right! It's time for the Feast of Swords, kupo!

Cut, cut, cut, kupo!
What part of “traditional, elegant, and tasteful” did you not understand, kupo!? What about the stunning Genji armor? The nostalgia-inducing mochi? The health and happiness of—

Linkpearl: <Ring, ring>

Good day, kupo! This is the Mog House Manag—what!? I see…thank you.
Er, I'm sorry to disturb you in the middle of your riveting rehearsal, but we may have to make some last-minute changes to that announcement, kupo…
I've just been informed by the union chief that this year's Feast of Swords is to be cancelled—effective immediately.

Kupopopo!? You can't be serious!

Was this a direct order from the three nations, by any chance?

I don't have all the details, but that seems to be the case, kupopo.
It might have something to do with the fact that every time we borrow suits of precious armor from the Far East, they're swiped by some unscrupulous sneaks…

We may push the patience of our Far Eastern patrons past breaking point, kupo...
The three nations can't afford to let our incompetence invite an... [Read More]

Odin World Character Population (04/14/2008)
Apr 14, 2008 - 9:27 AM - by Illuen
Odin World Character Population (04/14/2008)

This May, FINAL FANTASY XI will celebrate its sixth year of official service.
At present, FINAL FANTASY XI boasts a total of 32 Worlds populated by 1.7 million characters and half a million registered users. Along with the release of the Wings of the Goddess expansion, these numbers continue to grow.
The long-awaited World Transfer Service and the ability to select the World in which to create a character have also been well-received and widely used since their implementation last year.

This continued increase in characters and the advent of unrestricted World selection has led to overpopulation in certain Worlds.
When compared with the average numbers of 55,000 characters and between 15,000 and 16,000 users per World, the Odin World in particular stands out with a staggering 70,000 characters and 23,000 registered users as of the end of March.

Ordinarily, the overall prosperity and activity of a World is improved in proportion to the size of its population. However, a situation of overcrowding can create game balance issues, such as struggles to claim ordinary monsters and Notorious Monsters, as well as aggravate economic problems. In the worst case scenario, a situation can occur where the restriction on the number of simultaneous connections creates login problems, changing areas becomes a lengthy or limited process, or a limit is placed on the creation of new characters.

To avoid these very issues, a free World Transfer was offered to the inhabitants of Odin. While many players accepted this offer, the situation of overpopulation remains relatively severe.

With quality of service first and foremost in mind, the development and management teams are devising solutions to this problem on Odin and other Worlds. Removal from the list of destinations for a World Transfer or the list of Worlds available on the character creation screen, as well as continuing to provide free World Transfer services, are some of the ideas being considered for overpopulated Worlds.

We hope that our players will also take these factors into consideration when utilizing the World Transfer Service or choosing a world for their new character.

Thank you for your continued understanding and cooperation.

Apr 01, 2008 - 1:40 AM - by AKosygin
StarvingArtistEdit: Although it should have been more than obvious, I am confirming that it was an April Fool's joke created by me. My thanks to Pikko, the staff at Allakazham, and the staff here at DiV for helping me out. 140 replies and more than 9300 views (50+/740+ here) isn't too shabby for a night's work I think.

I briefly explain the process on my LiveJournal for those that are wondering how it was done. High res versions also there. leghoneun: On Vieras and Moogles
