The quest for the chocobo license is in Jeuno. I would recommend heading towards Bastok first and acquiring 4 clumps of Gausebit Wildgrass from the Wadi Hares in the Dangruf Wadi, then setting out towards Jeuno from Bastok.
The Gausebit Wildgrass is used to complete the chocobo license quest - otherwise if you arrive in Jeuno without it, you're at the mercy of the auction house; even should it be available for purchase, it will be pretty expensive, since that's the only place where it's used.
The path to Jeuno from Bastok is:
Bastok Markets > South Gustaberg > North Gustaberg (West) > Konschtat Highlands > Pashhow Marshlands > Rolanberry Fields > Lower Jeuno.
Of these, the zone you should be most wary of is Passhow Marshlands (Malboros, Goblins, and Goobues are aggressive). Try to stay on the "wide" paths through Pashhow as much as possible, and stay way far away from any of the aggressives - and be patient if there doesn't immediately appear to be a path - sooner or later they'll shift and give you an opening.
Rolanberry Fields is a much easier zone to navigate. Goobue Farmers, Ochu, and Goblins are aggressive (plus the occasional Igniis Fatuus during overcast weather). Unlike Passhow Marshlands, however, you have large spaces to maneuver around enemies.
I strongly recommend leaving Bastok as a level 1 job (enter your mog house, talk to the moogle and have him switch you to something you haven't worked on yet). That way if you mess up you don't lose any XP.
This trip has a added effect of teaching you just how far away you can be from enemies before they notice you.
