Re: server migrations
I haven't heard of any server migrations happening anytime soon. Did something get announced?

As far as I know, the last migration was from the beta server to normal servers for 360 folk.

Re: server migrations
IF a migration is to take place SE will announce it on their official site and we will report it in the news section

as Aelathir said though, there are no planned migrations currently (and probably won't be)

Re: server migrations
Question if a server migration happens do they just move you or do you get a choice wether go or stay?

Re: server migrations
It varies. Generally in the past it has been voluntary.

Re: server migrations
I've never heard of a migration where they force people.

Could they do that?

Re: server migrations
Unlikely. Unless somewhere down the road they did server mergers, but that wouldn't be exactly the same sort of thing.

Re: server migrations
They could technically force you if they start running out of ppl who subscribe to FFXI and needed to merge servers together or something and randomly place your character on a server dependant on where he is/level/etc. But it's really unlikely that'll happen. Ever.

Thanks for backing me up on that one.

Re: server migrations
No, S-E hasn't announced a server migration yet, and odds are there won't be one for awhile. As far as I know S-E has only done 3 in the past.

But with X-Box 360 out there could be a chance SE will make another server or two for migration.

Re: server migrations
How it has worked in the past is S-E announces that migrations are open both on Playonline Viewer and their main website. Once that announcement is made, they usually list the high concentration servers and then list lower concentration servers they will be migrating people to. In the last one, for instance, Diabolos server was linked up with Hades this way so that I could've migrated over to Hades if I so desired. Once that announcement is made, the rest is plunked into your lap.

1. If you want to move to the specified server, you have to physically log yourself in and go visit a new NPC in one of the starting cities. Usually it's a red-armored fellow named "World Shifter", or something like that. There was one in Port San d'Oria that I remember mocking for a good bit, just in case anyone was recording how silly looking I thought his armor was.

2. Talking to the World Shifter will give you the conversation option to move to the new server. I believe there's a confirmation screen that shows up as well. I've heard that you also get a confirmation email on the POL system to further confirm. If you haven't logged into your POL email account in awhile, (or ever), you may want to head over to Navigator and familiarize yourself with it just in case.

3. You only get to choose to move to one server, not two or three options or any of them at random. They've said in the past they may change this system later on, but I suspect the programmers have nightmares about every NA player hitting up Ragnarok to visit the old importers or something of that nature. If certain servers get flagged as being just for a certain Nation/Region, you end up with really lopsided bandwidth and over/underuse periods.

4. If you choose to move one character, you have to repeat the same process with every single character you want to make the move. While they will cap the number of players moved, they will never separate you from your mules/alts if they can help it. You just have to remember to move over every character from your account that you still want, or it gets left behind on the old server. While you may still want a mule left on the old server to keep touch with your old friends, it is advisable you move your Kirin's Pole, etc. off that mule before you do so.

That's essentially how it works, usually after the registration period has closed they will wait about a week and then make the actual moves in the next server maintenance. Also, the Xbox 360 just barely went live with TAU, so there is a pretty good chance that they'll add another opportunity to move. We also had an influx of players with TAU, so pretty soon they'll have an idea of who's staying with the game. I remember they had two moves with the PS2 launch, or at least a move a month or two after it launched when they had a decent idea of server stats.
