I thought the time limit for this fight was 10 mins...

It is 10 minutes - that's why I remember my time, because I almost lost due to time.

Earth Staff is viable, but it greatly increases your battle time, since you're taking 20% less damage and curing 10% less. It makes you less likely to die from damage, but more likely to lose from running out of time (and also increases your dependence on MP-recovery items).

Personally I'm not convinced it's based on HPs healed, there seems to be such a wide variance reported by people who've parsed their results. I know SE likes to make things hard for us but I can't believe they'd make it so much based on luck.

I reckon it might based on a set amount of damage taken before modifiers which is why people are able to load up on defense and still win in plenty of time.
