Respect to all WHMs out there
I sort of took WHM's for granted before - not now.

I have been playing RDM mainly so used to backup healing.

I partied as a lvl10 whm for the 1st time last night, and i was Terrible!!

I had forgot to get Protectra for starters. I forgot my pies.

I had to spam cure's on my PLD tank when fighting IT lizzy's...it wasn't easy! If it wasnt for the PL shooting the odd Cure II im sure someone would have died somewhere along the line.

Seeming as we had a PL as well, I was asked to Banish, Dia and Paralyze (no rdm in pt). I forgot Dia and Paralyze for the first few fights until someone had to remind me.

I felt like a N00b all over again...geez. Thats the last time I moan abour new WHM's in the dunes :p

I hate playing WHM, but im lvling it for my Summoner as a sub. Now though, I have a new found respect for WHM's.

Re: Respect to all WHMs out there
I've always thought that to get an advanced job, players should be required to not only level 1 basic job to 30, but to level the other 5 basic jobs to 20. This would give everyone an appreciation of the other types of jobs. ^^

It sounds like you knew the basics of what you should've been doing as WHM, but were just a bit unprepared. Whether or not your party has a PL, Dia and Paralyze cost minimal MP and are very effective at speeding up the XPs (but as a RDM you know this, right? ;p ) The party was probably pulling mobs that were tougher than usual just because the PL is there.

At level 10-ish, ugh, I remember the pain of trying to keep the tank alive because it's so hard with just the one Cure spell. At higher WHM levels, it gets a little easier because you have more Cure spells, Regen, and you get Silence and Slow.

And remember those pies next time. ^^ Lots of MP for those low levels. Later you can switch to Mushroom foods or Cookies.

Re: Respect to all WHMs out there
Lol yeah. But if I had to lvl all other jobs as well I would have quit :p

I dunno, seems wierd. No excuses for it, but I would have thought I should have known a bit more about whm's as I did backup (and main a few times) healer in a number of PT's. I could understand coming from a WAR to WHM but RDM to WHM shouldnt be that much different.

Maybe it was just a bad day. Just finished lvling in Tahrongi Canyon and I got an invite right away, so headed straight for Valk. Hence forgot Pies and Protectra.

The party was ok about it, said we all get bad days but I know what they must've been thinking as I have done it myself - thinking boy, I wish this guy done his job properly.

And I also learnt (which i didnt know b4) that u cant use cookies and pies at the same time. I suppose that was useful.

I have got a whole host of stuff to sort about before I will need to lvl whm again to keep up with smn, next time Ill be more careful!

That is what the dunes are supposed to be for, learning from your mistakes. A lot of folks don't realize that being a whm is more than just healing, its buffing your team and more.

At least your party was understanding, I had to go through those levels without a PL so learning was much quicker and I rectified missing spells as quickly as I could afford.

Keep up the good work.

I always had the perception (a bit arrogant now it seems) of all these noobs in dunes, after my RDM got outta there. Now it seems I am eating humble pie which gives +10 humbleness :D

Re: Respect to all WHMs out there
This whole game is give and take the blame for things. I am a 36whm and I love playing as whm. I remember being in pt where the tank wouldn't keep hate and i would get pounded and killed. I would always get pissed off about it. Then I started to lvl my war and pld and found out how hard it really is to keep hate. I stopped getting mad and learned to use my black magic at the same time I'm curing so the fights go a little faster. And it helps the tank keep hate on him, at least it works for me.

Re: Respect to all WHMs out there
WHM is a rough job.... esp. when you forget to turn on your filters and can't see it when a party member gets negative status effects... and they get mad because they have to tell that they have blind para whatever... thats really embarrassing...

and haste can really become a chore after a while... how many people do you guys haste in single party?

"ok... I've quit 5 times... and failed each time miserably... they need a patch for FFXI like those nicotine ones...."

Actually, having someone remind me that they're blind, paralyzed, etc. doesn't bother me if I missed it. What aggravates the hell out of me is when people say "{Paralyzed}" - several seconds after I've already cast Paralyna on them, or the ones that instantly tell you what they've been afflicted with the moment they get it, before I've even had a chance to begin casting the counter-spell for it.

Haste for WHMs is a chore only because it eats up so much MP (40). WHM's primary job is to conserve MP to keep the party healthy, and sparing the MP for Haste can be difficult if the party isn't functioning well.

Just some info for your summoner career.
You can main heal in the lower level parties fairly well (Dunes, etc). Cure 1 and Cure 2 really dont have a big difference there...Cure2 eats up mana as soon as you get it as a WHM as im sure you know, so i only used it in emergencies. I found that i can main heal as a SMN/WHM on everything in the dunes except Goblins (sometimes is fine), Damselflies, and Pugils. Gobs/Flies arent exactly that bad, it's just the AoE that kills you. If you have another back line healer, it's ok. Pugils need Cure 2, always, in my opinion. Too much damage done to the tank in a short amount of time, and then when they AoE damage, you cant take time from the tank to heal up your melee and stuff. from Pugils in the Dunes to level 22 in Qufim Island, you cannot main heal, at least from what i've experienced. I've tried, and kept failing. i'd start the fight out with an Avatar (ramuh), send him in to bloodpact (Thunderspark for awesome damage+paralyze), dismiss, then start healing, tossing in the occassional Dia. I had plenty of mana, of course, because summoners are friggin MP tanks when not having avatars out, but hell, cure 1 doesnt do a lot when it doesnt even heal the damage from a normal hit from a mob, y'know?
