its ok, im not too concerned with my reputation, since my PLD is fairly high level. Also, the reason I'm planning on playing BST is cause i wont have enough time a night to sit in Jeuno looking/forming a PT. Thus, I'm taking the solo path.

THanks for all the civilized replies

If reputation isn't a factor to you, it won't hurt much until you get 40+, but even then the mp difference between subbing blm and pld wouldn't be too signifigant (50-60 mp at best). At the upper lvls of 50+, you are severialy hurt not having a proper sub, in the case of blm you are missing conservemp and and escape alone. But that's not a factor if you are just taking whm to ~37.
Quote:
AS WHM you can theoretically level to 75 with sub or without. Reason is because many parties are desperate for a WHM and they'll take any they can find.
New whms, please don't take his comment as fact. 41+ whms have lots of competition. As it stands now at 64, I'm averaging 1-2 party invites a week with search comment, above average gear, and a very good reputation. Problem at my lvl is there are always 4-5 other whms lfp within a couple lvls of me (most JP who get invited first regardless of their lack of required gear eg: Dark staff). You can abuse the high whm demand at <30, but don't expect it to carry you to 75.

I whole heartedly agree with this. Waste your reputation at your peril.

Level 1-20, no one cares what your subjob is.

21-30 is where it might start hurting you. You'll probably still get invites, but may pick up some bad karma along the way. It probably won't affect your effectiveness "that" much, but the perception from other players is where you might pay the price.

Above level 30 is where bad subjobs really hurt you in a practical sense.

This is spot on and pretty much exactly what I was going to say. Don't expect invites past 30 with a bad sub. 20-30 is going to be rough. Expect to sit around some, and take quite a bit of flack. Levelling blm from 1-18 can be done in 2-3 days. It's really worth the time to do so.

im getting ruby's with friends atm, so im not bothering reading through the whole thread (so im sorry if i repeat something or anything along those lines).

my opinion, if your a taru, you can get away with no sub at all if playing a mage class. ive lvled my whm to 35, with a lvl5 blm sub. sometimes i sub in something really stupid, just to see the reaction of the "elitist player". fact is, i have more mp than a mithra/galka/hume and elvaan in full equipment with food. and ive been partying in the lvl1 taru gear. i get compliments often, and i consider myself to be a pretty good whm (mostly based on the positive feedback ^^). if your a taru mage class, you can pretty much get away with anything. other than that though, a bad sub is definately going to hurt you big time, especially elvaan because theyre already bad whm's to begin with ; ;. my opinion ^^

edit: and by the way, im going to be subbing smn once i finish the quest ^^. having a bad sub past the mid-late 30's is just stupid. even if your a taru. level your sub

I would say you can get to about 30 with a bad sub/gear, because usually people want a whm in their groups and since most of the population is melee based before 30, well whms are always in huge demand.

With a bad sub, you'll by picked by xp groups in the most frequented areas (dunes->qufim->kazham) and most groups forming up in jeuno and leveling somewhere else will usually don't bother with bad sub/gear and will make sure all the group is competent.

I would guess going whm/pld would be possible, at least you would show others that you have 1 job past level 30 and have more experience. Having rank5+ will also help you getting groups with more experienced players.

Whm demands before 30 i just huge and some whm manage to level even if they are horrible and lacks on crucial spells or pieces of gear. Example : lvl 25 whm/smn was in taru starting gear and didn't even have regen. Also grouped with a whm/thf that didn't have cure3 and regen and wondered why he pulled so much hate chaining cure2.

Post 33 when the "true" leveling begins (in altepa, garlaige or CN groups) well players with bad sub are just taken by desperation groups because now there is a lot of casters at lvl 32-36 since most of the war/thf/mnk that leveled to 30-32 are now trying advanced jobs.

The more convenient solution would be getting blm to 17 for warp, then you'll probably be good till 40 whm.

What's funny is how much things changed in parties for me after 30 (more after 35). Before level 30, half of the people around are warriors since that works as a starting job for so many others. A tank was always a piece of cake to find. The most waiting around looking for members was looking for that WHM or BLM to join. After all the Warriors go and get their advanced jobs, finding a tank has been the problem for parties. I've had too many parties disband already because there is no tanks anywhere to invite. The WHM/RDM/BLM weren't really hard to find, though.

I had a party invite me to party in Gustav Tunnel recently when I was 39. The leader was a Tarutaru DRK/BLM. He already had another DRK/WAR, a WHM, and now I, the SAM/WAR. The guy wanted me to tank. I said that Samurai don't tank, especially not without a BLM in the party. He said since he subbed BLM he would double as one. :dead: I left soon after.

I guess it's a good thing I'm going to stick with War as my main...though I'm having fun playing each job in turn up to 20. I may do the same all the up to 40 just for the fun of it. After that I figure I'll have a decent idea of what each job is about.

My personal advice...

Please keep your sub leveled. MP does matter alittle bit. But there is an importance in having a leveled sub for whm that is overlooked for some reason.

The abilities you inherit from your sub.

Ability matters, not stats.

There is going to be a time where whm has to use Elemental Seal. Conserve MP, esepcially how we dump MP quickly on to a tank or whatever, helps alot.

I lved Whm all the way to 30 with a lv9 sub, til I stopped playing that character cause I was ashamed of my laziness. Now that I level my sub, I feel alot better about myself as a player.

1-30, yes it does not matter as most people are ONLY leveling to 30 to go advanced anyway. Thier main jobs are just thier "subs" being prepared for thier future advance job. Seeing as you plan to be BST ~ sure lv BLM to 10 and be through with it. I say BLM, cause there will be some people who will bitch and moan about your sub. And moaning and bitching gets irritating when you're the whm. Best to avoid that if anything.

Yay Zalesha, been a while lol. Hope you enjoy rag ^^. Cerb is kinda . . . well I'm leveling bst now <3 <3 <3 why did I ever level rdm to 75 w.

Anyway, biggest issue with leveling your sub is that you get better PT's with it fully leveled. When I pick people for a PT I choose Rank and comments, then proper sj for a slot. If your a whm/war, I'm going to pick you last since I have no idea what your trying to do? Are you going to melee, or are you going to heal? I can't tell, even an underleveled blm, rdm, or smn sj is better.

If you really want some advice that might be worth taking, level your sub to 18, you don't even have to touch it again, maybe have someone help you to 11 or 12. Solo maze makers if you can (blm). I don't know if the new spell distance thing makes that impossible or not anymore though.

Next, get whm to 15 and do korroka to 19, can do it in a few hours. You need to form your own PT for this btw. Then go to saur..... champ. (sp? no clue, it's outside of port jeuno w) and kill beetles to 21. You can go from 15-21 easy in a day.

Next go to qufim, kazham, altepa, CN, your done.

If your hard core you can do this in 5 days.
