Thats an Astral Ring worth of mp for 1200 a stack.
Pumpkin Pie gives +40 MP for 30 minutes. 4K a stack. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 03-02-2004, 01:10 AM | #3 (permalink) | | Junior Member Join Date: Jan 2004 Posts: 418 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 0 Thanked 2x in 2 Posts Gil: 286 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 286 Donate | At lower level (I am currently leveling my WHM sub), I personally find the problem with not the max MP, but the MP regen speed.
Sure you get more MP if you eat pie, but since it take longer for you to fully heal that MP, it doesn't help that much. After a couple nights of eating pies, my party chef suggested that I use juice instead.
Now I don't even bother with apple pies, since the max MP is less of an issue when I have the better regen, and the +INT part of apple pies seems to be wasted.
One problem with juice is that it's not stackable, and they wear off fast. You pretty much need someone to make them in the field for you. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 03-02-2004, 01:56 AM | #4 (permalink) | | Junior Member Join Date: Oct 2003 Posts: 106 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 0 Thanked 0x in 0 Posts Gil: 154 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 154 Donate | i have thought about using both a pie and then juice after, am i right in thinking that they are stackable, or are roast mushrooms better overall?

It only needs lvl11 cooking skill. Just need 1 fire crystal 1 rock salt and 2 shrooms of the same kind (any shroom) to make it. WIll add +3 to mnd -1str +10MP and +1 MP recovery when healing.
Pies on the other hand is better but is costy. I recomend Roast mushroom at early lvls. Shiia 75 BLM WHM RDM WAR NIN MNK - semi retired -

In that case, I think Apple Pie is the best food at low levels (through the 20s, perhaps) for WHM. Higher max MP will be a big help, and at 150-180gil each, not too expensive. But if you're Taru, consider using Honey or Bubble Chocolate instead, both give +1 MP/tick while resting and run 80-150gil apiece. Juices are good too, even the cheaper ones like Orange Juice, and they stack with food effects... but are relatively expensive considering how often you have to use them. Orange is around 100gil on Phoenix, Pineapple is 200-300gil. (I always carry a melon and pineapple juice around in case things get tight and Refresh/Ballad isn't available for some reason.)
Roast Mushrooms just aren't worth it at lower levels, though they are probably the best affordable overall food at higher levels. At 300-400gil each, they will start to look like a bargain eventually. All the stats a WHM needs, in one handy package. Also, Shiia, they give +2 MP/tick while resting, not +1. You can get the same resting MP rate bonus from Goblin Chocolate, but the price difference is negligible from what I've seen. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 03-02-2004, 01:49 PM | #7 (permalink) | | Digital Wizard Super Moderator Join Date: Aug 2003 Location: Florida, USA Posts: 6,054 Style: Light - Version 6 My Mood: Thanks: 69 Thanked 478x in 316 Posts Gil: 1,278 Bank: 148,450 Total Gil: 149,728 Donate | I'll second the recommendation for Bubble Chocolate. Apple Pies are great if you're Galka/Elvaan, and OK if you're Hume/Mithra, but they're overkill for Tarutaru. In all cases, Calieneri is right - MP recovery is much more beneficial overall when chaining.
When you're first starting out, 3000+ gil for a stack of roast mushrooms just isn't practical. On the other hand, ~500 gil for a stack of Bubble Chocolate is very doable, and you should notice a significant impact in your effectiveness if you practice good resting habits(and you should). Goblin Chocolate is a waste of money, IMHO... same MP recovery effect as roast mushrooms, similar price, but without the +MND bonus. If you cook it yourself, however, it can pay off, since it costs less to make than roast mushrooms.
If I remember right, Honey has some sort of nasty -stat effect which makes it less desirable than Bubble Chocolate (on top of being more expensive, since it is a core ingredient for a large number of cooking and alchemy synths, as well as a quest item in both San d'Oria and Windurst).

I've never noticed that, if that's true maybe it's another "invisible" effect. I'll try it tonight to double-check. But since it usually sells for a bit more than bubble chocolate, I unload any honey I farm from bees at the AH anyway.
About chocoloate... Think of Bubble Chocolate as an extra "Clear Mind" trait for 30 minutes... that is exactly the effect it has. Your first tick of rest will get you 1 more MP, making each subsequent tick of rest more efficient. It's nice, and also why mushrooms are great later: think of them as Clear Mind +2. (And also why, as Icemage mentioned more clearly than I did, the goblin chocolate is good but not in comparison to mushrooms.)
Also, Goldberry asked about foods and juices being stackable. The answer is yes, they are. You get a "food effect" when you eat something (burger icon ). You get a "Refresh" icon when you drink a juice. Also, when you drink Selbina Milk, which restores HP, you get an "Regen" icon. These three effects are separate, so you can have all 3 at once.
However, note that the drinks' refresh and regen effects do NOT stack with the effects of the Refresh and Regen spells. They will be overwritten, since they are the same effect, just from a different "source". They do stack with bards' Paeon and Ballad effects, though.
At low levels with a bit of spare cash, try pie + pineapple juice + milk when you're soloing a mage job. During those first dozen or so solo levels, many foods/drinks offer relatively huge performance boosts. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 03-02-2004, 06:26 PM | #10 (permalink) | | Junior Member Join Date: Nov 2003 Posts: 497 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 0 Thanked 0x in 0 Posts Gil: 933 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 933 Donate | i spent 15-20k getting cooking up to lvl 10 ( dumping all made stuff ), and farm for shrooms myself, and saving fire crystals i get for making them.
When my cooking hits around 18-20 from shrooms i'm going to level it up to 40 so i can make witchkabobs instead ( hq synth ) and they are also quite profitable. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 03-03-2004, 08:30 AM | #11 (permalink) | | Junior Member Join Date: Oct 2003 Posts: 106 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 0 Thanked 0x in 0 Posts Gil: 154 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 154 Donate | | Quote: | Originally posted by Calianeri

I imagine it getting very costly having to buy these foods and juices everytime you lvl, so im very glad i choose to lvl cooking even though sometimes it can be expensive this way too, what i generally do is go round checking bazaars untill i find some bargain ingredient that i need, it sometimes works!! ^.~ | | ::Quote Selected:: | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | All times are GMT -8.
