Why Brynie?

I noticed a popular trend among WARs (especially humes and Mithra races) is to wear the Brynie armor instead of Haubergeon.

Why give up the +10 accuracy for +10 attack if you're not tanking? Is Aggressor that good that +10 accuracy isn't really needed?

Any opinions?

Thanks,
Xien

A lot of high-level warriors sub ninja nowadays and end up tanking pretty often. For this purpose, the -20 evasion on haubergeon is unacceptable. It isn't so bad with hauberk, but if you're gonna blink tank lowering your evasion through equipment really isn't a good idea (ideally you would want to get +evade equips). Byrnie is a nice substitute because it has a nice attack increase but no evasion penalty.

i hate to tell you but with a crap load of evade+ and capped evade you will hardly dodge 1 hit vs a IT. WAR dont have the highest evade+ so in the end its really not woth it. Even if you where /nin tanking i would use hauberk-haubergeon +attack-evade earrings STR rings or whatever.

Yeah I spent like 90k on eva gear for my warrior to get from 30-37, thinking tanking would get me groups faster. Barely dodged anything. A waste of money.

Yeah, I heard our Evasion is weak, so I haven't been messing with it.

Seriously though, I say go with which looks the best! All that matters anyway, right?

You know, the real trick with blink tanking is keeping track of your hits left.

Having +evasion gear might actually screw this up. A few ninjas I know rather have the negative evasion gear cause they don't want to dodge. They do better fighting it out and know that they can safely cast blink on their second shadow so by the time they finish, the mob would have removed that last blinked shadow.

If the mob missed, then the ninja would have screwed up his casting and this new blink will not activate and he'd only get to take 1 more free hit. Sorry if this doesn't make too much sense but it's kind of hard to describe. You just gotta go try it to see how it'd work.

2 philosphies behind blink tanking

1) count every shadow religiously but use evasion gear to make them last longer (moot point after getting Ni)

2) Have a fixed routine based on mob's attack speed.

ie. blink, provoke, debuff, debuff, blink, debuff, blink, debuff, provoke, blink etc. in a set order.

This would be done after lv 37 for most ninjas or if they are in a pt with another ninja. (Done sometimes with - evasion gear, so they would have the proper number of shadows left)

so depending on which ever school of thought you believe in, different ninjas have different attitudes to the whole blink tanking thing.

sudo,

It is my understanding if you cast Ichi or Ni while you still have one or more images still up, you overwrite those. Meaning, even if the mob misses you when you wanted it to take your last image, you get all three new images. So it's not that it messes up your blinking, just that one image was "wasted" and that is less efficent.

If I'm wrong please say something, but I'm pretty sure this is how it works.

Ni will overwrite Ichi and itself.
Ichi will overwrite itself and NOT overwrite Ni.

This is why ninja need to watch going from Ni to Ichi.
If the last shadow of Ni is not cancelled before casting Ichi, you will be left with one shadow, a wasted bag, and a recast delay.

just so you guys know, you can see how many shadows you have left by turning misses on, you'll know whether the mob missed you or whether it used up a shadow.

Sasarai,

yes you can see if it missed or not but the trick is to cast your next blink while you still have 1 left and took 2 hits so far. You can see the first hit almost always, and the 2nd hit means that you need to start casting the next blink. (yes you can turn on your misses, but it's not really necessary as you can count the first 2 readily from the "shadow absorbs the hit" messages)

The problem comes when the mob missed the 3rd hit and you already started casting.

If you wait till all shadows are gone, i.e. after the 3rd hit, You will get interrupted between casts. So it almost becomes "necessary" for the mob to hit you on the 3rd hit. You can't really afford to start casting after all 3 shadows are gone or wait for it to not miss. (if you want to stay totally invincible of course)

Semi problematic even with -evasion gear cause you still got the odd parry >_< so hehehe, ninja tanking isn't nearly as uber or easy or simple as ppl seem to think.

I really fail to see how that is a problem, it doesn't matter whether or not it hit you when recasting if you only have Ichi, because if it hit you, you'd be casting it anyway, and if you have ichi up, and recast, you're still gonna get the 3 shadows out of it.

I know what you are talking about and it really doesn't matter for Ichi only, I don't plan on leveling NIN past NI level so I'm sure it's a little worse with having to cancel out shadows etc.

Yup!

Yeah, I agree w/the poster who said our AGI and Evasion are capped so low that you wouldn't be dodging anything despite the Evasion-.

FOR EXAMPLE; If the NIN's Evasion skill is 100, and the WARs are at 20... the WAR ain't dodgin' nothin'. Fine, give me a AGI+2 ring, give me Evasion+5... will it make a difference since my Evasion is capped so low? No, it won't. So, being a Mithra will bring your Evasion to say, 25, still... you won't dodge. [This was a example, not true info, and it was exaggerated to prove a point.]
