Re: SE to revive Lufia series, Cing makes Hotel Dusk sequel

Nice.

I've been playing Lufia I and the encounter rate is killing me. It's even worse than old school Dragon Quest. The game itself feels like they took the Dragon Quest model and vastly improved upon it, but the encounter rate is just way too high. I am enjoying it and I want to finish it but I am highly tempted to just gameshark it so I can experience the story and be prepared for this Lufia II remake.

Lufia II is a prequel, nothing to really "prepare" for in that regard.

Kind of a shame that they're dumping one of the best turn based systems ever for another action RPG. But my God, a JRPG where the characters look like they're over 20. I might buy it just for that, should it make it's way stateside.

Well, it was the decision of the creators to do something different with the game, I can't fault them for that. I'll trust their intuition on this one, as fans tend to overemphasize the values of certain game elements. Its much easier to take something that was an RPG before and make a different RPG out of it than it would to, say, take Super Mario Bros. 3 and make it a 3D platformer that loses nothing in translation.

The aging up of characters is starting to become the new trend, I think even the Japanese are getting sick of "teenagers save the world." Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey is also bucking the trend, removing its usual teenaged cast and replacing it with a cast of adults in their early 20s to mid-to-late 30s. They're an international allied military investigation team, too, which is also the first time in that series since Digital Devil Saga for there to be a multicultural cast rather that strictly Japanese.

The protagonist is still japanese though

Its one thing when its a Zelda game where its generally expected Link will be a kid. It took some time, but the Ocarina generation of Zelda fans has come to accept there's really no difference between being Kid Link and "Grown-up" Link.

In RPGs, there can be such differences.

Missed this the first time, but wanted to address it anyway. DQ had the ability to control encounter rates in its very first game. You just needed to be savvy with your gold and always make sure to stock up on Holy Waters, which allowed you to lower encounter rates with monsters weaker that you.

It was never a 100% reduction, mind you, and didn't work on higher level creatures at all, but its something and its remained there for the entire series. Its helpful when you want to avoid so much grinding to get to a dungeon.

It doesn't have to be an action-RPG to have decent control over encounter rates...

Lufia was one of the most well done emotionally tearing RPG's I've ever played.

That and the world's most difficult puzzle was in part two. That was fun to obtain. Ahhh memories.

I wonder if it's going to be a continuation of Maxim's decendent's decendent? I don't remember what happened too much in part 1, but part 2 was more like a prequel.

I loved how you could choose not to fight enemies by poking them with a arrow or that hook-shot wanna be weapon. XD~

The Magic Box - Estpolis: The Lands Cursed by the Gods Preview (Page 1 of 4)

There's some images from the Lufia 2 remake. Seems to have a nice sense of style and some nice environments.
