Rumor: Leaked minutes from Sega/Sony meeting reveal PS2 and Dreamcast on PSN, much more by Griffin McElroy { Sep 22nd 2009 at 11:20AM } Okay, buckle up -- there's a whole lot to take in here. As discovered by French site Objectif-SEGA, Sega's public relations FTP site recently got a titillating addition: The alleged minutes from an August 5 meeting between the Hedgehog-centric publisher and Sony Computer Entertainment America. (The document is reproduced in its entirety after the break.) The biggest, potential news from this document concerns SCEA's general plans for the future. One excerpt from the minutes lists a Spring 2010 launch window for the PlayStation Motion Controller -- specifically March for Japan. Another noteworthy section mentions a "PS2 emulator for PS3," claiming that "SCEA wants to sell all PS2 titles on PSN." Later in the document, the possibility of Dreamcast titles on PSN is also suggested, in addition to a "Japanese Import" section. This leak has an air of credibility due to its appearance on Sega's public FTP media resource center -- however, it's entirely possible that it could have been uploaded to said FTP site by a hack-savvy Dreamcast enthusiast. If this is true, it would be a phenomenal boon to Sony and the PS3, especially if that "emulator" can play disc based PS2 games as well.

Which of course means it's a complete and total lie.

Personally, I don't think Sony wants compatibility messing with profit.

Given the excruciatingly, painful slow pace that PSX and UMD games get out on PSP - and most of them aren't even the good ones - I'd much rather have backward compatibility for PS2 games on PS2. I mean, its not like PS2 games are hard-to-find relics save for the niche. That and anything that was good on Dreamcast has made its rounds to other consoles now.

I would, however, accept a lack of compatibility if PS2 and DC games were also made available to PSP, much like PSX games presently are.

I don't think PSP has the graphics power to do PS2 games. Or DC games, for that matter.

And I don't think Sony is going to go releasing a software-only PS2 emulator if they can get you to pay to download games... games that you can't sell used. Will there be titles that will never appear? You can bet on it. Will they be the ones you really wanted to play? Tough luck. Get a PS2 and hunt down the game yourself.

I'd still rather they just restore full backwards compatibility to the PS3 the SOBs. I love how my model has the virtual memory card that works for both PS1 and PS2 games, taking away the need for memory cards and giving me unlimited saves. And it's one less system I have to hook up to my already busy TV.

Yeah, I'm not hunting down PS1 and PS2 memory cards on Ebay just so I can still play my older games. I may not play them all that often, but I still cherish them and the fuck if I'm going to pay for all of them a 2nd time (even if they're just $10 each) off of PSN.

False, PSP is dead smack between the systems in terms of power, it could handle all DC games and most PS2 ones. I don't think FFX, for example, would pose much of a challenge for PSP. God of War Clearly wasn't posing any problems and that's right up there on the high end of PS2 with FFXII.

Yes, Sony is this stupid right now, that's no reason to support their halfassed handling of PSN content right now. The fact that the plodding oafs than handle VC content at Nintendo run cirlces around Sony on releasing good games is kind of sad.

Speaking of the PSP, the "GO" has an amazing save-state feature where you can pause and quit a game and resume it at any point, even after shutting the system off completely. God damn you Sony for removing the UMD drive on it though. I'm not re-purchasing my entire library and paying like an extra $100 over what the 3000 costs. F'ing Sony I swear, I love their products but I can't stand their business model > _ <

As I said, whatever was good made its round to other consoles. Shenmue II went to Xbox.

Unfortunatly no one bought it and Sega seems as uninterested in allowing a sequel as they do about localizing 7th Dragon for western release. Sega seems to have a very arbitrary process in what gets over here and what gets completed. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they're given Valkria Chronicles another go and bringing over the ambitious Infinite Space, but they just don't bring the RPG love like SE and Atlus do.

As for Shenmue, I imagine Ryo has set down the mystical sword and settled down with Shenhua, they've had kids and given up on whatever grand adventure awaited them.
