My Mood: | FFXI on PS3 80 gig?
I saw another thread but it was a few months old. Is it possible to run FFXI on the 80 gig? Would I need to download the PS2 stuff? I would be using the latest PS2 disc with all the expansions on it. I am noobish on the PS3 and will be picking up one on Friday. Just don't want to buy the disc also when it won't work. |

I believe it depends on which 80 gig version you pick up. I got the Metal Gera Solid one, which is backwards compatible. And I play FFXI on that without a problem. I did have to download the PS2 part, it is in the games section for downloading. I believe the newer 80 gig version is not backwards compatible, which means you most likely wont be able to run FFXI on it. |

The newer PS3's are no longer backwards compatible, so it won't read your PS2 format disc. However on the off chance you do get an older model (very unlikely). Step 1. Download the PS2 package from the Download Center Under Games Step 2. Insert your boot/install disc for ffxi Step 3. You'll be prompted to partition the HDD for PS2 software,Should be 13G. Step 4. Follow the Install/Registration instructions on the disc for POL. Step 5. After restart you will be promted to Install FFXI and Expansions Step 6. After Install and another restart, You will have to DL the Updates Step 7. After Updates enjoy playing FFXI on your PS3. If you are lucky enough to get one that works, I recommend getting a wireless keyboard, or a long enough USB cable. I found the graphics smoothing and quasi upgrading from PS2>HD looks really crappy and hard to read if you are forced to sit at regular keyboards length away. Or you can disable the smoothing/upgrading in the settings menu on all PS2 games (although some games look good with it like MGS3). Oh and I suggest playing through a hard line connection on the PS3, I used to have troubles with keeping a wireless connection Stable over long periods of time on the PS3. Although it may have been corrected as I can play Socom CA with no hard line and no lost connection. Good luck hope you can get an older machine, If not, dust off that PS2 w/ HDD and go that route. Or get an XBOX, or a computer if the sole reason is to play FFXI. (of course you can always wait it out. I am quite confident SE's next release of software will contain PS3 compatible DVD's, If not SE is retarded.)

Other online PS2 games work fine on the PS3. FFXI is the only exception,

The PS2 package in the PS3 Marketplace was simply never released in Europe so playing PS2 games online using the PS3 can be a huge pain in the rear sometimes especially if you lose the network disc.

This "PS2 Package" I believe is just for hard drive installs/content. Pretty much makes a 10gb partition that the PS2 games can see and use as the hard drive. @Firewind: Make a US account and download it off the US store, I believe it should still work. I have a US console and have downloaded stuff with my JP account before off of their store. However, since the package is just a hard drive seeing device for ps2 games, I can't imagine you would need it since y'all never got the PS2 hard drive?

We got the PS2 HD bundled with FFXI and Twisted Metal: Black actually. I remember seeing them both on stores when they first came out in the UK.

Actually you're right, it was the network adapter that came with TM:Black, sorry about the confusion. I think the FFXI may have been an import since google is turning up nothing for me too

My Mood: | Re: FFXI on PS3 80 gig? What issues? I've never had any problem running FFXI on my 60GB PS3. Granted I don't use it often, but the few times I have, no issues.
