My Mood:  | Nintendo tells Shigeru Miyamoto to STFU...in a sense Shigeru Miyamoto banned by Nintendo from speaking about his hobbies - Nintendo Wii News - QJ.NET "The Times Online is reporting that Nintendo has banned Shigeru Miyamoto from talking about his hobbies. How come? Well, it's because Miyamoto's ideas can cost the company billions in revenue. According to the Times article, it's because some of Nintendo's biggest and most lucrative projects have come from the mind of Miyamoto and the things that preoccupies his days. If he talks about his hobbies with reporters, people could latch on to them prior to their development with Nintendo and cash in on Miyamoto's thoughts. Banning a guy from speaking his mind seems a bit harsh, but we can understand Nintendo's reasoning. We do hope that Miyamoto comes up with better inventions and ideas that improve the gaming world, because it's nice to see something new and innovative hitting the scene. "

I just find this hilarious. Because normal people go from "exploring woods" to "puzzle-focused action-adventure/RPG", and "gardening" to "console-based real time strategy". Sure, things like exercise leading to Wii Fit and learning an instrument leading to Wii Music make more sense, but those games already existed. Not in the same form, of course, Wii Fit and Wii Music are still very unique (the latter in a very bad way imo), but they were already out there.

He pitches ideas for games. Those ideas come from somewhere and the most likely source is what he does for entertainment. He gets paid to make what he finds fun, fun for everyone so that Nintendo can profit off of it. Surprisingly, they don't want him talking about this publicly. |
