New Details on PLATINUM GAMES' "BAYONETTA"

RESIDENT EVIL 2. DEVIL MAY CRY. VIEWTIFUL JOE. OKAMI.

What do these have in common?

They're all crap compared to the next new game from Hideki Kamiya. And going by his history, he's no slouch.

Bayonetta is the premiere next-gen action title from the newly organized PLATINUM GAMES, formally SEEDs, formally CLOVER STUDIO.

It is a heavy action game, full of style very much like the DEVIL MAY CRY series. Think of it as Kamiya's attempt to outdo the DMC sequels, which he never got a chance to work on. The big difference, however, is that Bayonetta is much darker, sexier and more violent than DMC.


Our heroine, Bayonetta.

Bayonetta wields four guns, named Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. She carries two guns in her hands, and wears two as stiletto heels. All four guns can be used simultaneously.

She can pick up weapons that enemies drop, however, and use them in her own way. For instance, a certain enemy drops a tuba, and she can use it as a bazooka. She also weilds a katana, but the name of the weapon is currently unknown. There will be more weapons revealed closer to release, and they can all be equipped in various combinations along with her guns.

Her bullets don't automatically hit the closest enemy, like in DMC. When she misses, the bullets will ricochet off walls and can hit surrounding enemies and objects.

While it may look like leather, her outfit is actually a part of her hair. When she attacks, she may lose a bit of control over her hair, revealing little teases of skin. The more intense your attacks are, the more is revealed. Her most powerful attacks render her almost completely nude. This is because her most powerful attacks summon great beasts and apparitions using her hair. Two examples are a giant dragon that attacks enemies, or a giant stilletto heel that stomps on them.

There are three attack buttons: fire, punch, and kick. They can be combined, and you can upgrade to more powerful attacks and combinations.

She can also use "Witch Time," an aptly named ripoff of Bullet Time that allows her senses to be heightened and nearby enemies to slow down.

The game has been in development for about a year and a half, around the time Okami completed development. It arrives on PLAYSTATION 3 and Xbox 360 next year.

Yeah, I hate these renders. The trailer footage we've seen so far is pretty badass though, and very stylish. I'm really looking forward to seeing some actual in-engine stuff at TGS.

is it just me, or is there something seriously wrong with her chest? It looks like her breasts are halfway down her torso. I mean, in general the art looks like crap (seriously, man, you went from DMC, then made viewtiful Joe, and then FUCKING OKAMI, and now you think THIS looks good?!), but that just looks horribly wrong.

Looking fine is one thing. It works for most games. This is way below par considering his previous work, though.
