12 player bullet hell would probably be worse than 12 player split screen. 'oh dear god everyone else is already in all the safe zones where the hell am I supposed to go'. I've also heard of people having lots of problems with making collision detection that A: doesn't suck and B: doesn't kill your CPU. Not sure if that's just a beginner problem, though, or if collision detection really does take a lot of processing power in these games.
