Blast Works: Build, Trade, Destroy!

Blast Works: Build, Trade, Destroy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anyone else looking forward to this? For those that haven't played Tumiki Fighters, I strongly recommend you google it, download it, and play it. ABA games are incredibly fun, rRootage is easily my favorite shooter; not that I'm huge on the genre, but for a free game, it packs a ton of fun and content.

Personally, I'll probably be buying this just as a thanks for all the great games; being able to play Blast Works (as well as having rRootage, Torus Troopers, Tumiki Fighters, and Gunroar) is a bonus. Maybe not so much Gunroar, but that's just because I don't like it's playstyle so much.

Anyway, even without the "I love these guys" factor, it still looks like a very quality game. Customizable levels, enemies, your own ship, and it seems like you can trade it all on WiiConnect24

For those who are curious, there's a trailer video of it on Nintendo Channel-- you can probably find a higher quality version on gametrailers or something, but I know for a fact it is there.

A video on BlastWorks, which focuses on just how much customization there is.

I mean, BULLET PATTERNS? I believe that means that pretty much everything short of the core gameplay elements can be changed. That is incredible.

This video doesn't look that interesting to me. Maybe because of the arts they're showing... they look like they're made for small kids.

I can't say for sure until I try. Have to see how fun the core game play is, and see what actual contents those crazy japanese community can come up with. It might turn out awesome. But based on this video alone, I'm not too interested.

Re: Blast Works: Build, Trade, Destroy!

The video is showing user generated content, not much gameplay itself.

this is the regular trailer, which is a more general presentation:

It's only made for small kids as much as Wind Waker or Jet Grind Radio are, really.

And oddly enough, I haven't seen anything about this being released in Japan, only US and EU... which is stranger still when you consider that the guy that made the original game (and the other three games which are included as bonuses) is Japanese. But yeah, plenty of room for some awesome creations.

Huh. I can just imagine Feba making an actual Rocket Lawn-Chair in this game.

Also, what's with all the crazy stuff when the ship seems to pull a junkyard out of hammerspace and use it as a battering weapon, unless I'm mistaken? o.o;

Still, looks interesting.

Re: Blast Works: Build, Trade, Destroy!

YM, I hadn't thought of it as hammerspace before, but that's a really good description. The easiest way to describe it is "GO DOWNLOAD TUMIKI FIGHTERS, NOOB!", but I'll try to be a bit more indepth for those who don't suck up quite that much.

Basically, when you shoot enemies, they take damage. When you destroy enemies, their ship falls out of the sky. While they're falling, you can attach them to your ship. While they're attached to your ship, they can take damage for you (until they're destroyed and fall off for good, which in the original only takes one shot), and they also fire their weapons; which is why when you see it expand there are bullets shooting off in all directions. This makes it possible to amass quite a bit of extra strength. The best way to describe it is really "Katamari Damacy meets R-Type".

On the flip side, all that extra stuff has a tendency to get destroyed if you just leave it out. This is where the slow button comes in-- it makes your ship move a bit slower, stay at a consistent angle, and causes everything attached to your ship to vanish. This allows you to, say, shoot at a ship from underneath it without moving up (move up, press button, stay where you are). This also makes it possible to retract those extra goodies when they're about to be destroyed, and keep them safe for later. Of course, using just the ship has it's disadvantages as well-- the loss of weapons and shielding obviously, but you also cannot attach to new things while you have things retracted; which is why you can see them shooting things, bringing out the hueg stuff, then putting it back away. They're attaching to the things they just killed.

Oh, is that what that was... I was wondering why that ship kept getting attacked by a giant croissant.

Was looking up TUMIKI Fighters videos on youtube, and saw this. It's a really good overview of the game. A few notes though, for people who haven't read all of the above:

It's been pushed back to June 10th.

It's only 2 player multiplayer. Didn't have time to work out 4 player.

Although it's not mentioned specifically, it sounds like you can't edit your enemy's movement patterns. You can edit their bullet patterns, ships, and so on though.

IGN Review

IGN has a review of Blast Works! It sounds exactly like I was hoping and expecting it to be. Also, although there's only three reviews so far, it's looking like this could turn out to be very well loved by critics.

BlastWorks: Build, Trade, Destroy (wii: 2008): Reviews

So far, it's doing better than Boom Blox. Of course, Boom Blox has 50+ reviews, and Blast Works has 5, but still.

Re: Blast Works: Build, Trade, Destroy!

I have my copy, and it's great fun so far. Blasting through the Campaign and arcade modes before I start messing with user generated stuffs-- I want me some rRootage!

Great fun. Definitely not something you want to play for hours on end, but it's wonderful for those 30-60 minute bursts.

Also, Circuit City is apparently giving out $10 gift cards with every purchase. So you might want to look into that.
