Re: Square Enix Liscences the Unreal 3 Engine

They're making the same mistakes they made with PSP. Back then they were saying they wanted to "Elevate gaming out of the handheld ghetto" back then.

Guess what? We like the handheld ghetto, its cheap, games are cheap there, too. Cheap has worked in that market for 19 years, just recently ending with the release of FFVI. 19 years of Game Boy and the system line was never trumped, because the games were inexpensive and enjoyable. And now DS is repeating that. Cheap still works quite well and its reflected in Wii's sales.

Sony is trying to market to an audience of gamers that doesn't exactly exist in large numbers, just like they did with PSP. There is such a thing as going too high-end. PSP isn't a total failure like the other handhelds that went against Nintendo, but its not exactly striving to set itself apart from the PS2, its just trying to duplicate PS2 game experiencees.

Meanwhile you have DS and Wii games that are experiences that are defined by the system functions, you can't get experiences like it on any others system for the most part.

MS was just smart in that they didn't play around with what already worked for them. They met gamers halfway and made Xbox Live more interesting to boot.

Sony diehards don't want to admit that the market has shifted drastically out of Sony's favor. It reminds me of how arrogant Nintendo was going into the N64 days, they thought the market revolved around them just because of two prior generations of success. History repeats itself, only this time, its Sony.

I honestly have on idea where you're reading from, considering Kojima has never mentioned anything about MGS4 going to the 360. Rumours have been passed around by the media constantly but Kojima, Konami and Sony still maintain that the game is a PS3-exclusive.

Besides, Kojima's complained that Blu-ray is already too small for his game. Unless everybody wants to play MGS4 on the 360 in a 10-disc set, I don't see it being possible. And past history? Twin Snakes didn't sell well on the Gamecube. Substance bombed on the Xbox and PC. MGS3 was a PS2-exclusive and, despite what some predicted, its redux remained PS2-exclusive. It's as if I could submit a story to Kotaku and they could run it claiming that GTA IV was becoming PS3-exclusive. Rockstar and Take Two could refuse to comment on it, and, with the way the press has been passing on its unbased rumours, everyone would believe it, and take a refusal to comment meaning "YES!", just like 1up claimed that a Final Fantasy VII remake was in production simply because Square Enix refused to comment on the matter at one time, and Nomura said he'd like to do it if he had the time, but he's far too busy with current projects (obviously meaning "no, it's not in production").

Of course the 360 has reached a point where it's a viable gaming platform this generation. It's the most viable, as it approaches that 10-million mark. However people need to consider what a one-year headstart can do for a platform. While the Wii's developer support is more short term at this moment and the PS3's is more long term, the 360 has the most overall developer support, and while it's not as successful when compared directly, it's certainly playing the part of the PS2 this generation at this time.

If Sony's made any true mistakes with the PSP, I'd love to hear them, because they've certainly succeeded where others have failed miserably. I don't know of anyone who expected the PSP to be more successful than the DS; the thought of that is just ridiculous. But the PSP isn't lying in any gutters and it's still growing as a platform, which is a huge success for anything competing with a Nintendo handheld after this many years. There's already far more third-party support for the PSP this year and next than there was in 2005 or 2006, and I think that shows very good signs for the platform as the DS is becoming more crowded with non-games that teach you how to display proper party manners.

I'd like to see anyone say with a straight face that the PS3 will crash, burn and fail, because as much as so many people would like to see that, it's just not going to happen. The competition it faces is certainly stronger, much stronger, than what the PS2 was up against, and both are selling exponentially better than their predecessors, but while the PS3 is off to a slow start, it's already surpassed what the PS2 or PSone had sold at this point, which is a good sign for a piece of hardware that comes at double the price.

We're going to see more and more slow sales for Sony in the next few months, and they're going to continue throughout the year. They're still sales, however, and with Sony approaching a 2-million install base, it's likely to be between 8 and 10 million by the end of this year. By that time, we could see the 360 between 15-20 million and the Wii as high as 30-million with the rate its going. I certainly wouldn't call that a drastic shift in the market out of Sony's favour. I'd call it a balancing of the market, and something that will continue to balance out as the years go by. People look at this retarded "console war" as a 2-3 year deal, when the PS2 is still competing with its successors 7 years after launch. This is probably the most balanced console generation we'll ever see; every platform is comprised of strong hardware and heavy developer support, and by the way things are going they'll all have very, very strong install bases in the next 2-3 years.

Re: Square Enix Liscences the Unreal 3 Engine

I think it's rather hard to compare just the sales of an item to say if it's a success or not, there are just too many different factors, and then you toss in people's personal tastes and it just get's really complicated.

PSP vs DS, Nintendo, up to a certain point in time, would replace your DS if it had dead pixels on the screen after you bought it, Sony would not replace the PSP if it had dead pixels. I am not interested in watching a movie on a screen the size of the PSP's, toss in the fact that PSP movies cost about as much as a full size DVD, and that feature is not attractive to me. The PSP does not come with a case to protect the screen with when you aren't using it, the DS has a built in screen protector. The PSP comes with a 16KB memory card which only holds space for a few save files, and I dislike the Sony memory cards since they hold less space and tend to be more expensive than their counterparts. I can understand why the PSP only uses Sony memory cards, but I still don't like them.

And those are just some of my reasons why I favor the DS over the PSP. With the other platforms there are a entire host of other considerations to take into account. Heck, with the PS3 you can install operating systems on it right? And it surfs the web? At that point I'd have to consider a PS3 vs a computer, it's not just a comparison with the other game consoles anymore.

Then as PaiPaiMaster said, these platforms are just getting started. The Legend of Zelda: TP was one of the first games to come out for the Wii, I'm really looking forward to what else they might put out as time goes on. I also expect alot of things from the PS3 as they get going with it. Xbox 360, I honestly don't know that much about so I can't really say about them.
