The difference between the two games is basically the source of income. In FFXI the only enemies that drop gil are humanoids and certain notorious monsters. Almost everything in WoW drops currency or something valuable enough to be sold to vendors for currency. The farmers in WoW don't have to monopolize anything because everything drops something, unlike FFXI where there's a select few items worth farming and a select few places to farm them.

I do feel bad for them. I know what it's like to work a crappy and humiliating job, and it would suck if people were out to stop me at every turn. If only they knew of the few sites out there that they can sell their currency without having to go through a broker and taking the kick to the profit.
