      FFXII general strategies (SPOILERS)

      Since I have been ruthlessly squashing spoilers in the First Impressions thread, I thought I'd open up discussion for what approaches everyone has been taking in the game.

      I'll share here some of the lessons I've learned from playing through about 30 hours of play (including grinding).

      General Strategies

      Those are my thoughts so far. How about yours?

      Probably the best advice I have is:

      Save your gil. Don't buy every piece of gear just because you can. Buy what is only necessary, or you will find yourself grind for days on end.

      I'm using tank - support/attack - healer kinda set up too currently. I don't think the weapon choices for support - healer matters at all. The only real fix choice is the tank using shields.

      Try to safe your weapons with elemental property. They can come in very handy since it will deal twice the damage to enemies weak to it.

      Don't left out any of your character by the way @@ boss fights get insanely hard sometimes you'll need all the backups you can get.

      Some mobs can X-zone you... very annoying. the character will be gone until you... zone.

      Yeah, that's very annoying. I need to go back and level up my backup characters a bit. My main tank is pushing on level 31, as is my main healer, but the others are lagging behind. I need to backtrack a bit and push the others (level 28, 25, 18, and 17 respectively) back up.

      My level 17 character I've been avoiding simply because I'm not using the strategy guide; she has zero spent License Points (she has well over 1800 unspent points now), since I haven't figured out what I want to do with her. I might go ahead and spend just enough points to get her all the Swiftness and HP+ upgrades - but I need to decide if I need a third healer (leaning heavily in this direction, as I don't really have a time magic or green magic specialist yet).

      My level 18 character is configured as a black mage, but she was so much less efficient than my ranger that I just stopped using her after a while.

      Even so, I need to go back and get them caught back up or I suspect future battles might be too difficult.

      its a great site that shows weapons vs stats info and who's best at what

      what I found funny was that everything talks up fran like she's a master of all weapons. yet based on that info, she's no higher then 4th best on all weapons but the guns, where she is tied for 3rd with half the group.

      methinks that's because of the stupid description SE gave her... which does not match up with in-game stats what-so-ever.

      So Bow is speed + strength?
      Fran is like a magical elf in other rpg. But better with guns than bows that she starts with huh... hmm..

      Really? I have her using spears and she is only outdone by Basch...when I equipped a bow that was more powerful, she only did about 10-20 more damage per hit. Although, I happen to like spears more so I'd keep using them either way, haha.

      Lots of new weapons in this one...am I the only one who loves poles?

      I have Vaan using Katana. The attack power is the highest in my group. But Arshe and Basch using 1h sword out damage everyone -.- don't really understand.

      Keep certain people with certain weapons, ie, Katanas/Maces to Ashe/Penelo since they have the highest magic power to add to damage. Also, keep one player with a Pole unlocked for mobs with really high Def (since damage is based against mobs Magic def). Also, becareful with Ninja swords, since many late game mobs have a resistance/Absorb to Dark Element.

      Also, don't rely on Quickenings to kill mobs later in the game, since some optional bosses have millions to 10s of millions of HP.

      the weapon chart in that link eticket is not exactly correct. since I bought my strat guide into work () i'll just post the info directly from there.

      Swords: STR + ATTK - DEF
      Daggers: STR + SPD (+ ATTK?) - DEF
      Axes/Hammers: STR + VIT + ATTK -DEF
      Maces: MPWR + ATTK - DEF
      Measure: ATTK
      Greatsword: STR + ATTK - DEF
      Katana: STR + MPWR + ATTK - DEF
      Ninja Sword: STR + SPD + ATTK - DEF
      Spear: STR + ATTK - DEF
      Poles: STR + ATTK - MDEF
      Rods: STR + ATTK - DEF
      Staff: STR + MPWR + ATTK - DEF
      Bow: STR + SPD + ATTK + Arrow - DEF
      Crossbow: STR + ATTK + Bolt - DEF
      Gun: ATTK + Bullet
      Hand-bomb: STR + VIT + ATTK - DEF

      like FFXI WS, those are probably percentage modifiers so a weapon with 2 stat modifiers might not be better than one with only 1.

      Def. look into purchasing Augmentations for your characters. Probably the best LP's i have spent so far in the game. Such as attack lore (sp) for example bumping up your characters physical attacks and other for other for HP+ and Mag atk+ << they make a very noticable difference.
