Talking Summoner....doing ownage damage...why is everyone whining?

so I hit 65 last night, got to try 1-2 eclipse bites before the party finished went to bed blah.

got an invite this morning to a nin/drk/thf whm/rdm setup, now pre-65 this would suck, low damage.

So i decided as my mp cost is 1/tick while refreshed ( plutos and austere body ) I'd try filling a damage role.


heres the exact setup



We were fighting processionaires only in the boyahda tree.

Surprised? I was.

After a short time I was getting a little bored so I started ate a chiefkabob and started fighting wielding my pluto staff.


If you add my damage to fenrirs our combined average was 1217
per fight.

I had to rest more than i liked because the elvaan rdm was being an ass with refresh, leaving me unrefreshed for up to whole fights causing my mp cost to rise to 4/tick.

The party didnt last that long, only an hour or so, but I'll post more logs when I get parties with whm+rdm or whm+brd and I can swap to a damage role.


After the july-august updates in which avatars get skillchain elements and MB ( we'll really have to see how its implemented ), I can definately see a summoner taking the place of a melee.

summoner weak and puny? maybe up to 65.

After that its a whole new ball game*






* excepting that processionaires are not totally puny and the eclipse bite damage is replicated on other mobs.

thf I didnt look at, drk was full af, lifebelt, 2xsnipers blah the usual, no haubergeon but not exactly gimped.

1) your logs/statistics ignore downtime, your damage is of course going to be higher if you have time to do two blood pacts every fight, but if you were doing chain pulling (which you may have) at some point you have to sit down and rest mp, which would lower your overall average. Likewise if you are pulling/killing fast there may be times when you can only get off 1 blood pact on an enemy. Logs also ignore if you do more damage than necessary to kill an enemy (say if it has 60 hp left and you do a 500 eclipse bite to finish it off).

2) fighting an enemy weak darkness (may or may not be a factor I still dont know)

3) drk clearly outclassed you damage wise, and this was without resting

4) if you had a pld tank instead of a ninja, or even tweaked your pt setup in some other ways, odds are you would not have been able to do as much damage.

5) You have now lost access to all your other useful abilties by focusing on doing damage - this is not really the case with other jobs.

1. I was doing a blood pact every 52 seconds. Firstly I wear austere hat+robe which is -5 and if you use a /ma "Eclipse Bite" <t>

you can use blood pact when the timer is on 3-4s ( type it out, keep menu open, it works ).

Downtime was not the issue you would imagine.
With refresh my mp cost leaving fenrir out is 1mp/tick. Thats right, I lose a whole 20mp per minute, and 109 mp per eclipse bite.
2 minute fight, 40mp from slip and 218 from bites, total cost 258mp. I usually rest for the last ~10-15s of the fight to get some extra mp back so I'm ready. Sometimes I did run dry and I could do nothing except rest, eclipse bite, rest, eclipse bite then rest until the next fight which reduces my damage from a fight by 300-500.

2. possibly, I'll post logs when I move off processionaires.

3. you sure? it was only the thief outdamaging me, I was well above the dark.

4. Agree, with blm rdm and myself, with a paladin tank I cannot do two bloodpacts per fight, possibly not even one.

5. I dont know, even if I eclipse growl and howl to maximise my melees damage instead of doing eclipse bite will that translate into 1112.46 damage in the same time as eclipse bite? if not is it worth it? The only ability I would use over it would be earthen ward vs AE spammers.

6. Thank you, I'm moving to den of rancor at 66 and I will try there also, and indeed everywhere I exp up to 70.

I will try and get some rangers so I can give some comparisons.

My last blms damage average was around ~1450 and thats on the higher side for blms ( I was restricted to buffing and healing as the setup was rdm blm myself on the backline ). When I get to put my AF2 ( gloves in particular ) I think my damage will only go up relative to the other members. I have the leg piece waiting for me at 71 which will allow me 49 second blood pacts.

Also note fenrir wasnt participating in skillchains or boosting the parties damage in any of the normal ways ( no enhancing damage abilities on a timer ) , I think post patch summoner damage will go up and hopefully any new avatars in CoP will help as well, but the logs show summoners with the right setup ( like any other job ) can produce good damage.



I'd like to add I dont do this every party, its really dependant on the setup, I play healer/buffer if needed but I would prefer to do this ( its much more fun than spamming cure 3 ).

eww... that drk is using all af... ahaha... :3

That damage is pretty gimp though. I wonder if he was casting too much or something. Maybe stuck using vorpal scythe instead of guillotine?

Anyways I envy smn damage since they also have the ability to group buff and backup heal... (*'-')b Definetly one of the best endgame jobs.

lol wow I am kind of surprised - I assumed the drk was keenedge and the thf was fast - didn't really pay much attention to it... that is one shitty drk you had (no offense - but seems like it at least)

eclipse bite will only rarely do ~1000 vs IT, maybe once in a few hours, its average is 400-500, but two of those per fight + fenrirs 300-500 melee damage and yes, I will outdamage most of the melees I party with.

I'll post the logs of my next party where I go damage dealing.

The thing is. The job does exist before level 65/70.
You can't do that before then.

Two, your damage costs MP. The DRK can sit there without casting a single spell and effectively do more damage than you with "par" gear, which he didn't appear to have. All AF post 60 is gimp for most melee. The extra ATK, etc make a huge difference.
Plus he can Stun to interrupt monster WS, spells, contribute to sc for burst, sata on the tank for hate, etc.

It doesn't matter though at the moment. We'll see where summoner is after the patch. The changes sound interesting, and if implemented correctly will make the job much nicer.

I think what this shows is for the time being smn can act as a damage dealer with a ninja,thf+melee that SCs with thf setup. You don't need a hardcore healer for ninja tanks, for the time being anyway... Unless your ninja can do it without a drk/thf or thf/ because your ninja is ungodly awsome.

Where I see the smn going after patch though is making this possible.

Tank+melee damage dealer+blm+summoner+ rdm/wm/ or bard possible. If summon can MB and SC I think summoner will be able to replace the 2nd damager dealer spot "maybe". Since you could SC with melee DD + smn possiblely. But it'll only be worthwhile if it can make the nice big SCs, we'll have to see. The summoner job is definitely about to experience a somewhat large change.


By the way, go thief! /em cheers Keen on.

Edit: About the dark being a pure damage dealer, that's not true. Mnk,war,rng if anything are pure damage dealers, depending only upon damage pretty much minus warcry. Dark is a hybrid that is suppose to deal nice but not ungodly damage, but while supporting the battle through absorbs, stuns, and some self centered abilities(drain/aspir). Too many idiots get into dark to be the 'best' damge dealer. And these people definitely exist, just look at the dark in this party, he used AF. /end rant
