In terms of armor (legs, body, head, hands, feet, mantle) what should I be getting?

For legs, stick with jujitsu legs. Not really much else to choose from that level.

Body, stick with jujitsu for the acc, or you can burn the gil on the Luisant Haubert when you hit 45, but I would suggest against it if this is your first melee job.

Hands, okotes okotes okotes! You will use these until the 70's, so I strongly suggest learning how to camp NM's, if you haven't done so already. I'm not sure how badly camped they are, but just check around sometime.

Feet, couple of choices. I went with the windurstian kyahan until higher levels. However, if you have a decent amount of haste, I would suggest camping fuma kyahan. Otherwise, don't worry about it and just stick with leaping boots or whatever else gives attack.

Not really much to choose from in the mantle department. Just stick with nomad's mantle (+1) until 47, when you can use jaguar mantle.

For head, I used voyager sallet. However, that might be a bit difficult to get, plus you need to have miseraux coast access. I would just say stick with emp hairpin or a waka mask for TP gain.

When you said recommended, I am not sure if your mean ideal (best) gear, or gear with good price : performance ratio.

If it is within your budget (or if you already have one), O.Kote or Horomusha (spelling?) Kote is great for gloves slot, and that piece can last until level 75 (for gear swapping).

For the feet, personally I used Federation Kyahan, but there wasn't much options few years ago. I had seen players stuck with Lizzy boots.

For body slot, Jujistu Gi can last until level 55.

Since you are not asking for earrings, rings or waist slot, I guess you got it covered. (Such as +attack earrings, typical rings for melee, Tilt Belt at level 40, life Belt at 48, etc...)

The head, back and legs slot choice at level 42 is up to you. There are a few expensive options but offer very little improvement/impact (like emp. hairpin)

For pants, if you are not annoyed by the look of Republic Subilgar (spelling?)....

In the past in level 40-ish parties, I had seen a few SAM include range attack swap-in gear setup, a few include defensive/evasive swap-in setup for backup tanking or SATA partner.

Note: When my SAM was level 40ish, Hasso/Seigan did not exist.
