New Merits for Samurai
Hmm. Dosn't look like anyone has posted these here, so I figured I would drop them in and let the discussion get started while we wait in anticipation.

Samurai
Ability Shikikoyo (To raise morale, or raise spirits)
Ability Blade Bash (No need for translation)
Job Trait Ikishoten (High spirits or perhaps pure spirits)
Job Trait Overwhelm (Again, no need for translation)

Oh, and just to toss out the ninja ability, Sange (Something to do with Dieing a glorious death)

Lets hear the speculation run wild while we await what is to come.

The stuff you have in parens, is that the translation or something?

I don't think SAM needs a Weapon Bash, and even if they did, Meriting for it seems silly to me. All those levels wasting TP on Hobaku when Weapon Bash abilities aren't that stellar. (Shield & Weapon)

There was once rumors about a SAM ability to give TP to your party members, I was wondering if we'd get one of those. Doesn't look like one of these is that, but then again we'll have to find out once somebody logs in and uses them.

People have already found out the basics of what the abilities/traits do (by reading the help descriptions, I'd guess).

Ikishoten - Increased TP gain from a zanshin attack.
Overwhelm - ATK bonus while you're face to face with the enemy. (Reported as broken in the update details.)
Shikikoyo - Share TP above 100% with a party member.
Blade Bash - An attack that can stun the target and occasionally cause plague.

I wonder if, when Overwhelm is fixed, it will be strong enough to be a viable alternative to /THF Sneak Attack WS, or if it will only be useful in fights where you're going to 2hr and can't SA all your WS.

After all, you can't be face to face with your opponent and behind them at the same time, and 99% of high level SAM I see have /THF at HNM fights. In Dynamis the positioning requirements are going to be evil either way (given the lag).

also nice for Spike Flailing mobs, I'd think. When you're just doing TA+ WS, this seems like the Samurai counter to the Assassin job trait. Not sure I like the ramifications of this, as that was a niche of thieves to be able to still achieve high damage w/out standing behind the mob like the /thfs.

Oh well, Daggers got turned into katanas and they can dispel every 5 minutes so it's cool.

One more thing: share tp over 100 with PLDs so they can Chivalry it into mp when in tight situations (I could see this being a really great dynamic for BCNM battles).

Yea, team work, way to go!

Think before you say something like this. All you want is the big numbers right... giving someone TP can be usefull in SO many situations that completely render your 500-1k damage useless. Save the PLD so they can use Chivalry, or get 100 tp, give it to the drk, meditate, now you can SC with the war, and the drk will also be able to join in and add a second skillchain, making for buckets of dmg. Think.

it only gives TP that is greated then 100. So assume that you are all ready @ 100TP and your partner is lagging behind. give him your extra, your not going to be using it anyway.

You know, almost everyone I've talked to in game (except for BLMs and DRKs, they're all giddy >_>) has said something like this. I think people were expecting these traits and abilities to outstandingly change their job to the outlandish expectations they had brought up in their mind. These abilities aren't meant to change the way you play your job. I see them more as "miniture two hours." These abilities are meant to, in my opinion, give you more options in tight situations, or give you more planning abilities in BCNM/HNM/NM/etc fights. Well, if you don't like your job, play something else. When you get boosts, don't whine about how you don't like these boosts, and you wanted something else. You know what? You don't work at SquareEnix. They decide what goes into the game, if they give us something new we should be appreciative.

A lot of people are of the "Man <enter popular job here> is so much better than me, why can't I be like them but still be the job I want to be? Why am I always picked last for kickball? blah blah blah."

I'm more of the "If I throw a dog a bone, I sure as hell don't want to know how it tastes."

Note: I'm not directing all of this at you, Toothpick, I'm just venting frustration at all the whining >_<

Actually I thought SAM got it pretty good. Shikikoyo is a perfect move for Samurai, being both effective and true to the idea of samurai in this game. It's also very helpful on HNM where the point is to skillchain+MB and lots of LS's like to keep the melee to a minimum.

What no one seems to notice about Blade Bash is the Plague added effect. Ever fought buffalo that plague you? -10tp a tick. It would be extremely useful on HNM where tp gain is the bane of all melee.

Ikishoten looks pretty useless to me, but I don't usually merit on SAM. I suppose it could be nice in that context.

Overwhelm seems good in concept, but I don't think it can compete with SAM/THF on HNM. SA is used above all for the 100% hit rate, which Overwhelm can't compete with. In addition, since the upgrades only give +6 attack, I doubt the base bonus is really that great either. This could be a decent ability for meriting however, where things go fast and SAM/WAR is better IMO.

So like every job, a mixed bag. Some are better for meriting, some are better for HNM. My intent will be to merit Shiki and Blade Bash fully, but each category could be useful depending on what you're shooting for.
