Character recovery and dual-box questions...

Hey everyone, I made a post about 2 months ago about possibly returning but I ended up getting suckered back into my former mmo due to peer-pressure . Well, I've been dying to give FFXI a try again, and I just wanted to ask a few questions before I do.

Firstly, I was wondering if the character recovery thing was still going on? I had a level 35 DRK (along with quite a few other classes in the 20's) that I'd really like to recover, but I wasn't sure what the chances were. It's been about two years since I've played him, so I'm a little doubtful about it.

Secondly, I was wondering about possibly dual-boxing in FFXI. For any of you that are unfamiliar with the term, it means to play two characters simultaneously. I've never once heard of anyone doing it in FFXI so I wasn't sure about which classes were the most effective partners. If I get my old character back it shouldn't be a problem since I have the Beastmaster class unlocked already, but if I end up having to start from scratch for both characters, I had thought of going with a whm/rdm duo. I'd much rather group of course, but if it's anything like it was when I last played, it can take forever to get groups sometimes, and I'd like to have an alternative if I can't get one. If anyone else has any experience with dual-boxing, I'd really love the advice.

There was one other thing I was wondering about (just popped into my head.) Is there a server transfer option in FFXI? If I'm able to get my old character back I was hoping to transfer him to the Asura server, but I wasn't sure if character transfers were possible in FFXI.

I think the return campain is still going but lvl 35 is really nothing in FFXI. I have heard of people dula boxing and I might pick a WHM or another mage that acn cure if you're trying to duo sometimes(but it's not something I do).

Well, the main reason I was hoping to get my old character back is because I'd have a much wider selection of classes to dual-box with. I figured the Beastmaster with a Red mage would be a great team, so I was hoping to try that out. Plus, unless they changed it recently, I remember it taking quite a while (for me atleast) to get a character to level 30, and then another to 35. I've never been a power-leveler though, so it usually takes me a while regardless .

Return Home to Vana'Diel Campaign for information on restoration. Right now, this is suspended because there's Registration Server Maintenance. Check the main page for info on that.

World Transfer Service for info on switching worlds; basically, it costs $25 and there's a waiting period.

Tons of people dual-box these days. You need two accounts, obviously. If you've got two PCs, or a PC and an xbox/PS2, or whatever, it's pretty self-explanatory. If you want to do it on the same PC, you'll have to use That One 3rd-Party Application. I have no recommendations on jobs for that. Whatever makes a good duo without both players having to do a ton of input during battle. Mage (ton of input) and melee (not as much input), for example

It did bring up another question though. You mentioned a waiting period on the character transfer thing, but I didn't see anything about it when I read through the link you provided. The only thing about a waiting period I saw was a 90 day period if you had already transfered to a certain world and then wanted to transfer to another. Is there something else that just isn't listed?

Also, I was a little confused about this right here:

For those using the PlayOnline Plus Character Name Address service, your current character name addresses will be invalidated once a World Transfer has been conducted.
After transferring, a character name address including your new World and character name will be automatically acquired. Please perform the appropriate settings after you have acquired this address.

* If you are using a payment method that continues automatically such as a credit card, even if your character name address is invalidated, you will continue to be billed $3 a month because the associated Content ID has not been cancelled.

I don't think I ever used the PlayOnline Plus Character Name Address service, so would this even affect me?

As for the dual-boxing thing, I do actually have two seperate computers so it shouldn't be a problem. A white mage is definitely going to be one of my choices if I can't get my character back, and I'm planning on a RDM for the second, so if anyone has any experience between the two, feel free to share.

I thought the 90-day period was from account activation, too, but that appears to only apply to when the account is first registered. So it looks like you'll be fine on that.

If you're not using PlayOnline Plus Character Name Address service, you don't have to worry about it ("For those using. . .").

I just wasn't sure if it was a service I had had before unknowingly. I'm guessing it's an extra paid service that you subscribe to?
