RED MAGES. HInts

First of i will start of sayin That Triel, my level 18 rdm/9blm is very young.
But what I want to say is that as an importer I want to give hopefull redmages insight into this the Red Demon Taoist class and some good sub jobs for it.

Fact : The red mage is a generalist class good at everything, master of none.

Myth : If I am a red mage I wont get teams easily.
Trust me when I say yes you will.
I have to use the /anon feature alot when i log on and turn on my "PT icon". If you are the closest thing to the only healer in town you will get a pt.
If you are only fighter left in town to round out a party you get PT.
If you are only blm in town you get PT.

My japanese is good and found this out early, If you are a redmage with sj blm PTs look at you with light in their eyes , why? because at this level theres only one thing to do in pts, be a heal monkey .. rdm/ sub job blm just has more mp to spare than a whm/sj non blm type does.
So when you need to cast cura 2 you will be veru well welcomed.

Disclaimer: remeber this is a game having fuin is the only thing that counts, not the uberist(ugh i hope this saying doesnt live long in NA version, which I wont be playing because , I hate annoying little beggars, and whiny .... sorry back to Red Mage.)
Be what you want to be not what any one thinks you should be.



Race :
Tarus : MOre Int so more MP
Hume: AVG INt so avg MP...but also more HP
Galka: lower INt so lower MP.. much more HP
elvaan: 1 pt lower than hume ..slightly stornger than hume.
Mithra: avg INt about same as hume .. BUt higher dexterity skills. good for hitting enemies.

Starting out:
When you start as a red mage one thing i recoomend is always have your sub job in mind from the jump.

There are definate bonus and penalities to this so be aware of the choices.
I ll list the jobs my Triel will be doing.
Triel will do all the magic based sub jobbing in the game. why? just to keep skills in magic high and I luv magic using classes

RDM/BLM : definately a good choice if you wanna cast alot of spells and with the Mp to spare. The downside is you cant take a beating to well and may need to be raised once something starts bitin you.

RDM/WHM: Very good to have the best heals and protection and anomaly reduction for this type. Penalty is the same as above.

RDM/SUM : Very good to support your summons with attack spells and rooting the enemy to one spot while it keels it. Good amount of Mp from the summoners pool Penalty as the above two.

RDM/BARD:SOngs are great for team healing and combat boosts to speed and running when you need to get away from that giant ranger on your butt. Not as weak as pure caster types.

There are othe options that I won personally choose but
may work for others.

Such as.
RDM/WAR : Tis is great for taunting good weapon skills and all around aggressive redmages. YOu can take much more of a beating than pure casters. Penalty the upper range of weapons will be out of your reach as will the more powerful two handed swords and axes.

RDM/MONK: another aggressive class but slightly quicker than the war also using knuckles for two handed attacks (=2 att) is good for a support role in fighting parties. Good amount of Hp pool gets dumped into you for added survivability. Penalities are like the WAR upper end gear is not for you.

RDM/THIEF: (I like this one most) WIth gil being in short supply in FFXI I must say having the skill to force money and items from a monster is awesome,gota buy those spells, also when needing to lend a hand in combat sneak attack is great.
the bonuses to evasion and dexterity are welcome.
Not as much strength as a war or monk but good nonetheless.

The other jobs will be added later like monday later..

The reason I say start thinking about subjobs now is because of their importance later. One tip I personally recomend with sub jobs is level them early as possible.
WHen you reach 9 in one RDM , go level the blm to 9 then the whm to 9 then whatevr else. WHy do this so early. You dont wanna hit 20 in selbina/VALk then have to go back and level those jobs again. You dont wanna do that. ALso it raises your magic strength by making you cast those spells over and over again , kinda like raising weapon skills.
I had triel a total of 27 levels by the time I statred to go to highlands for PT. 9RDM/9BLM/9WHm. so when you hit 18 those jobs are immediately avaible and ready to use with a quick run to mog.

Raising MAGic strength.
Magic gets stronger the more you use it in this game. cast those spells to maek them more effective. even if in town and dont need to be cure cast it. raise it that .2 or that .3, what i do alot of times is cast it on people at least 3-4 levels higher than me just to get the exp. I run around casting any friendly spells I can on anybody close to me.
In the wild cast it on creatures till you stop getting exp from them, attack and healing spells alike. no sense casting stona on a rock eater not much exp form it, cast it on a buzzard the opposite element type more exp for magic strength. when no exp cometh its time to move on.

guys please offer insights and experiences to this class for me liek quests items that you find work well and what not.
In the title of the reply put what you are contributing or saying .
example
reply topic : adding one handed sword types or my eperinces with arrows.

Disclaimer: Tazirai wrote this 2+ years ago. There have been many changes not only to FFXI but to red mages in general. Many things listed are outdated, but good as an archive of the red mage of the past.

Weapons

Weapons and weapon skills.
For a red mage these can mean different things.
I personally reccomend that you raise as many weaponskills as possible when you are young so that if ever needed they will be there to use .
I also reccomend that you raise them all to at least 40.
This will give you at least to weapon skills to use in combat as part of renkei(combo attacks)

Start of with the onehanded sword good choice and heavy hitter at level one- 9 les effective as you level but essential for weapon skilling. at level 9 get the quest from powhatan in bastok (if you start there) to get a nice level 9 one handed sword free.

One handed staff weaker than swords but they also give good bonuses at higher levels and they have great status affects.

Bow skill: what can i say about this , hard to raise but if you can get it to ten its good to have , when i play aggressive and want to fight , in Pt , I use one of these.
Bows are very good for pulling and less risky for the puller. I use level one arrows just to piss it off so it comes after me till warrior can taunt it. then let have at it with spells.


Weapon skills are very good to raise while still young becasue you may need later and its boring to raise a one handed staff when yoru main job is level 50 but sj is level 10

Thanks for the info tazirai . I'm always looking for any and all info for Red Mages since that will most likely be my base class. I'm think of either using Warrior or Paladin as a sub.

If you know of any websites that go more indepth on Red Mages, please let me know...

Weapon lists

The red mage can use a variety of weapons although he cannot use the upper echelons nor the most powerful types hes got a versatilty that works wonders.
She can use the following weapon types ,

Daggers, Hand to Hand weapons (fists, knuckles and so forth), One handed swords, Bows( not guns), One and some two handed staves.
Cannot use special class items like katanas or thowing knives ala the ninja ,

bows

Bows ar esoo nice , listen even if you are not the primary warior in the PT . I refuse to use the word tank for this game. The warriors ability to taunt means you can safely pull with this weapon and still not get smashed into pastry stuffing, once the monster gets in range of taunt.

Redmage pics

Ill post soem varoius armro to use and help at diferent levels but you really wont see a good red mage setup till level 50ish when you get into the AF, artifact armor.

A couple of things I want to add about RDM/WAR combo, since I did that for awhile before switching to SJ BLM:

RDM/WAR is an excellent combination for soloing/money hunting/completing quests/anything that you don't need to be a full PT of JP players for. I still throw on the WAR SJ when I need to go lay waste to some goblins or anything alone those lines. ^^

Also, you do NOT get the Red Lotus WS with the BLM SJ. You DO get it with WAR SJ. I don't know what other SJ you do/do not get it with, though I think it is safe to assume you do not get it with WHM SJ. This is quite unfortunate, because Red Lotus is probably the single most useful lower-level 1H sword WS to have. But if you are going to be playing in a PT primarily as a mage, there is really no need to have any good WS anyway. ^^

My personal recommendation for anyone interested in playing as a RDM is: Try out a couple of different SJ's. Because RDM is such a versatile job, there is really no ONE combination that best suits it. Try a couple of things and see what you like best. ^^

Class additions

Here ar more class additions to the redmage.

RDM/BST: Now heres a weird mixture for the redmage,
With the beast master you get the additon of a pet class.
Now let me say this is very workable for a red mage..
Heres the reason, With the pets available to you, you can send the pet in to harass the enemy AND blast them from afar. remeber dont do more damage then your pet or mob will be on you . this a viable combo for sometime solo as you take on mobs equal to you without the fear of instant experience loss. you can also heal and join your pet in fighting up close onc ethe mp gets low.

I really dig this combo to the red mage or any mage types for that matter, the added pet even though its weaker than you is great. it is also great support in a PT this will make a good class combo.


RDM/PAL: Red mage and paladin as sub job works in your favor if you are a up close type of redmage the damage from your redmage coupled with the defense of the paladin works very well and the slightly increase to mp is always good no matter the amount you get.


this is a better combination for an up close type of redmage.

RDM/DRK: IF you really must get in close and personla then go this route , even though a redmage has lower defense than a paladin, YOu can heal yourself (make a heal self macro to save time)
This will allow you t get in there with the fighters either when your mp runs low or when you are the only other fighter in a PT.
I reccomend you get good weapon skills if this is the route you choose to go , since you need to be effective in killing a monster as fast as possible . ALso If you go this route , Id suggest making redmage the subjob at sometime This will allow you to fight as a DRK and hela and blast as a redmage.
