| Re: Avesta the great Red Mage
It's okay if you want to idolize Avesta. Go ahead and try to match his playing style. But just know, he isn't the greatest overall in every aspect of the Red Mage job class. He's done things like fight stuff to an extreme degree. And he mainly combats one opponent. If he took on a whole squadron of Aern, or something stronger than a Lv75 job, then we may be more inclined to call him the best RDM. That is after all a kind of soloing. You should just learn to enjoy the game. If learning to play like Avesta would make the game more enjoyable, then that's all there is to it. But if you're someone who is easily anguished by 3 hours of repetitive button smashing, you may very well be wasting your time and money. Enjoy the game. Don't go throwing your entire being into something you can easily get agitated by, or intimidated by. And I'm not saying you can't do it. You can do anything with a mere video game. But some things will require time and patience that you just may not be willing to supply.

Taskmage, great insight and input on Avesta. Like Jei said, its different style and personal preference, solo LoO (added recently) is just un-imaginable until Avesta put it in video. He pushes the boundary of solo play, solo style and solo skills (note I add solo in everyone of them). Very very time consuming and but really very rewarding if what you formulated beforehand is actually achievable.

I didn't notice where you said solo a lot until you pointed it out. Well played, Dragonsword.

Noone can deny that Avesta has pushed the boundaries of what rdm can do. However, for those of us who choose NOT to do that, it adds a little to the pressure. Do you know how many tells I have had recently asking me to go solo Fenrir for someone? I mean - wtf? I politely refuse, then people launch into a tirade saying "well Avesta does it, why can't you". I try to point out the obvious - my merits are nowhere near ready, I don't have the gear, you don't just "get" a Duelist's Chapeau or dalmatica, I don't want to - you then get the "crap rdm" comments. We can't win! I can think of things I would rather do than put DoT on Genbu for 3 hours, generally involving doing stuff with friends.

You're so selfish, Kirsteena. Every day that you don't solo Charby for me is a day that I hate you more.

If you'd rather put yourself on a cross for a piddly two point warning rather than trying to figure out what you're doing wrong, though, it's not gonna make too much of an impact on my day. Carry on.

Granted, the kill that got me my drop wasn't a complete solo, but the first time I killed it (which was complete solo) there was a practical reason. XD | |

I've yet to see a true, full-length video of Avesta soloing something at normal, watchable framerate. I have a hard time believing he does what he supposedly does. Addtionally, he doesn't reveal his filter settings from the get-go. You can filter out the graphical effects of, say, Evoker's Roll, Ballad or Paeon V so they're not seen when you play. |
