Wink Thinking on a TaruTaru GUNMAN! XD

Hello everyone,
As I just started FFXI, I see a bright future ahead of me playing this game for a while.
As the first achievement I would like is 75 BLM that I'm working on its going good so far.
I would like to next or when I'm tired of leveling my BLM, level up my RNG. But I don't want
to use bow and arrows, I want to use pure guns ^.^ Now seeing you guys know more than I
do... is it possible to make a pure gunmen? Is there skills for it and everything? I was going to be
COR but then I found out its really a Gambler and the whole card effects ruin the gunmen image for
me. BTW: I am not going to use this in like end game and things, its just for fun for me... like once I'm
75 I'd just like to run around helping people and all and it would be so unique to be a gunmen for me.
So I'm just curious if its possible ^.^
Thanks Stubbs,

Off Topic:

What does that have to do with using guns? Aren't COR pirate gunmen in a sense? COR I guess you could say has some Bardlike abilities but uses Guns and uses cards instead of songs. I'm gonna guess that all you wanna do is shoot and you're saying that the added effects you get from cards to support the party are gonna interfere with your gunnery.

On Topic:

For guns you also have to calculate the cost of guns and bullets vs bows/crossbows and arrows/bolts. Since guns are marksmanship you'll get the same weapon skills that you get with crossbows.

Well, RNG has the highest marksmanship skill (which is what guns are based off). However, you will be an incredibly gimp RNG if you totally neglect archery. Not to mention the amount of gil that will be required to ding RNG75 using only guns and bullets, which become fairly expensive. I won't say it's impossible to become a RNG "gunman," but it will probably require a lot of work in farming and forming your own parties (so leaders can't be pissed at you for having archery skill 25 at level 50).

I'd rather like to do more DMG, I've had a few of my IRL friends tell me COR is more of a Gambler
job (it is..) and I don't really want to be support... I'd like to be more on the DD side

On topic:
So what your saying is... you can substitute Bow/Arrows for Gun/Bullets? Same skills used.. but it will be
more expensive. What if I used a combo of both, I use Cross/Bolts regularly and then when I want to have
some fun and for a level or two I use gun?

Ameroth is saying that if you don't level Archery you'll probably be shunned as a RNG lol. Crossbow+Bolts and Gun+Bullets will both level Marksmanship. So you could use Crossbow Bolts to level Marksmanship and then use Guns when you wanna have some fun. To be a true RNG you'll need to have both Marksmanship and Archery leveled, and if you wanna be a DD RNG's numbers are awesomeness.

Re: Thinking on a TaruTaru GUNMAN! XD

(1) As a 75 RNG, I can tell you that before 50, bullets are a complete waste of gil. As such, so are guns by default. If you want a job that does nothing but use guns, you're looking for COR. Despite the hordes of mentally-challenged players that pick up COR, its a respectable Gun DD in the face of being a support class. There will be plenty of time for shooting after spinning the cards, trust me.

(2) Guns offer practically no versatility to RNG - just raw damage - and there are situations where Bows and Crossbows will prove more useful. At higher levels on Bow, RNG can help PTs take less damage by using Demon Arrows to lower the mobs attack.

Earlier on, RNG can use crossbows to weaken mob defense with Acid Bolts, Blind mobs with Blind Bolts and even poison mobs with Venom Bolts. Holy Bolts will add magical damage - far superior to that of Elemental Arrows RNG gets - and this damage can be boosted by MND builds. Holy Bolts also are gained early in the game and can compete with with higher level bolts, arrows and bullets in the long run.

In short, a RNG that pays absolutely no mind to the benefits they can provide a PT with Bow and Crossbow is a joke of a RNG.

Guns are best left ot situations where mobs are reisistant to the magical effects some arrows and bolts might provide. Fear not, Crossbow will aid you in keeping your Marksmanship skill up in the meantime, which crosses over into guns.

(3) If you want any hope of soloing on RNG, a crossbow is required. Nothing else in a RNG's arsenal is as useful for soloing as the crossbow. Sleep Bolts help stop the mob in its tracks quite reliably and Bloody Bolts will help you cure HP.

(4) Adapting playstyle for the sake of roleplay and character theme is the road to failure in FFXI. I once heard about a Dragoon who got kicked from his endgame LS because he only ever used a sword his entire career, never having levelled Polearm. Those that forsake thier specialization in FFXI tend to be shown the door rather quickly.

(5) Finally, give all jobs a chance before deciding what your endgame jobs will be. I know people that do nothing but moan with regret about levelling BLM for endgame - because when you do, you'll never be anything else at endgame.

Its better to give all jobs a fair shake before settling on any job - you are far, far away from even thinking about endgame - it takes more than just having levelled BLM to get in these days.

I started out this game thinking I was going to be a RDM, BRD and a DRG - after a certain point, I lost my interest in all of them. RDM because the solo was immensely boring, DRG because I was just dicking around with a secondary favorite when a Gambler class hadn't been added to the game yet. BRD I quit because its just too popular for its own good and I'd rather be addressed by my character names than by my job class.

COR, RNG, BST and SCH have suited me much, much better in the long run. The only way you can find out what really works for you is to try everything.

COR has no native spells, only job abilities. I'm sure you can find some videos up on YouTube, there are also a mix of guides on the COR forum. Mine needs a little updating, but aside from DNC sub, QD charges, Dancer Roll and Scholar Roll, there's not much else different.

Go with Corsair, Like any job its not all that awesome at the start but once your pump a slugshot into a bird and everyone's like huh??? You'll be hooked for sure. That and the tricorne is pretty cool lookin. Don't worry about the bullets they make a difference but you can get by for a while on the cheap ones. When you pick up the Joyeuse it gets even better. Another plus is you can sleep and dispel.

Re: Thinking on a TaruTaru GUNMAN! XD

Nothing but guns on Ranger would be mega fail. Honestly Ranger is more suited for bow and arrow. Especially at low levels, although guns are solid, bow and arrow just packs a little more punch mainly because straight up, bow and arrow strikes faster.

I can only think of 1 instance that i'd use a gun over a bow to aquire amazing numbers. Like on a Dynamis Lord or something. The Culverin + 1 is a freaking beast, but has horrible delay. The delay isn't a problem on DL however, because you're only using your weapon skills, barrage, and 2hr.

Re: Thinking on a TaruTaru GUNMAN! XD

I made the mistake of ignoring Crossbows in favour of Longbows when levelling RNG and regretted it when I saw how much damage they can do with the right ammo (Holy Bolts FTW!). Seriously ignoring Longbows and Crossbows which are your primary weapons as a Ranger is a very, very bad idea.

COR is a gambling, swashbuckling, gunman pirate. It's one of the coolest jobs in the game for that reason. The fact I find it so fun to play makes it better for me.

COR has a B- in Marksmanship so you will still be doing good damage with guns and I've found myself able to keep up with RNGs . You won't out damage a good RNG but you will still be doing a notable amount of damage.

The dice rolls for COR last a full 5 minutes and the Phantom Roll job ability takes a full minute to get back so you will have plenty of time to shoot things between then. Remember you get to support the party by both buffing them and making a nice conrtibution to the party's overall damage output (as well as vastly increasing the damage output of other party members by buffing them).

Oh and COR also has a B- in Swords. CORs are better off shooting until high levels but a Joyeuse Corsair both looks incredibally awesome and can do a nice bit of damage due to the TP gain from that weapon.

Re: Thinking on a TaruTaru GUNMAN! XD

Speaking of roleplaying the character. Back when I was lvl 60 I got an Aramis' Rapier as a gift and proceeded to equip it.

Unfortunately I did not parry like a musketeer, nor was I able to take on 3 or more undead elvaan swordmen while using ropes to swing from one part of the room to the other. Specially disappointing was the fact that my character didn't get a moustache either.

Seriously SE, W T F?
