Ok, here is where I am getting confused.
You have a DMG rating for the bow/x-bow, and also one for the arrow/bolt used, then you take into consideration your STR...
How is the DMG actually worked out?
With a normal weapon I can say ok, 1 DMG rating on the weapon thats fine.
So is using a high powered bow with a weak arrow going to give you a max dmg rating? Or a weak bow with a strong arrow?
Thanks. Starting Ranger soon....see you all at 37! | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 12-28-2006, 08:34 AM | #2 (permalink) | | Lightness Keeper of Knowledge Join Date: Apr 2004 Posts: 2,404 Style: Light - Version 4 My Mood: Thanks: 95 Thanked 131x in 79 Posts Gil: 13,288 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 13,288 Donate | Re: Ranger DMG output str is always used to calculate the pdif (iirc) for all physical attacks. thats why str will always make more of a difference than any other stat when it comes to dmg.
the best dmg output (not sure by what you mean with rating) would be to use high dmg bow (typically the longbows in the game: powerbow, greatbow, battlebow, warbow, euryote's, selene's etc) with the highest dmg arrow for your level. Omni@Remora: NIN75 RNG75 MNK75 COR75 BST64 BRD53

Also, what are the diff between Archery and Marksmanship? I am horribly underskilled in both (Archery 20)(Marksmanship 0) but am wondering which is best for RNG, since they both have the A- skill rating. theres nothing really different between archery and marksmanship. both have the same weaponskills, they are just called different names.
flaming arrow = hot shot
piercing arrow = split shot
dulling arrow = sniper shot
sidewinder = slug shot
blast arrow = blast shot
arching arrow = heavy shot
emperyal arrow = detonator
i do believe that slug and sidewinder have slightly different renkei properties because i remember seeing them in separate renkeis before.
for x-bow the dmg is split between the x-bow itself and the bolt more evenly however, for guns, the main chunk of dmg comes from the bullet itself, rather than the gun.
dont worry about skilling both right away. i would skill bow if you are only taking it to 37. you can always go back and skill marksmanship easily. Omni@Remora: NIN75 RNG75 MNK75 COR75 BST64 BRD53

X-bow is used primarily to help support other DD damage through acid bolts. There are also other kinds of status bolts you can use including Bloody Bolts(drain), Venom Bolts, and Sleep Bolts. In addition to that, x-bow is a lot faster than Bow, so if you equip yourself properly you CAN do similar DoT although your ws may be lower. If you can pump out bolts fast enough though, you should be able to churn out ws faster, despite Bow's larger TP gain. I would stick to Bow until you're at least high enough to use holy bolts.
The differences in rng damage is not in Archery and Marksmanship, but in the type of ranged weapon you use. It affects accuracy, TP gain, and dmg output.
Shortbows are crap and are for non rngs. You shoot faster than bow, but your damage is lower and you're slower than x-bow.
X-bows are quick and have various effects on their bolts. The +1 versions usually come with large ranged attack boosts. Their TP gain is generally lower per shot, but you can shoot faster so it evens out and can be an advantage sometimes. But low TP gain also means it doesn't work as well with Barrage. Equiped correctly, your dmg per shot is not too far behind Bow. I would say it varies as to whether the weapon or the ammo is most important with this. Some rngs stay with acid and holy bolts for a very long time even though there are higher dmg bolts. They save the high dmg bolts for WS onry. It's not unheard of to carry some bloody, acid, holy, and high dmg bolts to exp.
Bows are fairly slow but their damage is higher. Their weapon skill damage is usually higher as well and you get ~12-13% TP per shot. With Barrage, you can easily get 100% TP quickly for a high damage maneuver. Bows also tend to be a bit more accurate. Bone based ammo like Scorpion Arrows come with a rng acc boost and most +1 Bows have rng acc boosts as well as large rng attack boosts. Getting the best Bow possible is more important than ammo as you could still do decent damage with Iron Arrows at lvl 60, although I wouldn't do that and wouldn't recommend you do it either.
Guns are the slowest type, but shot for shot they put out higher numbers and they also gain a slightly higher amount of TP than Bows (~15%). This doesn't necessarily mean that you'll outdamage other types, since it takes so long to shoot. But your WS damage will usually be higher. Guns also usually make the best use of Barrage because of their TP gain and EES because of their high damage. +1 Guns come with higher than normal rng accuracy boosts, which is good since it takes so long to shoot anything. :p You need the highest dmg bullet possible to make full use of a gun's damage advantage. Ammo is most important when it comes to guns. Also guns usually aren't all that great until much later. They are easily outdamaged by both Bow and X-Bow until you can use Bullets and Silver Bullets.
This is just a general idea of how the weapons work. There are also certain weapons that fall outside of the norm like E-Bow and O-Bow. But that even more places the difference on the weapons themselves and not any particular skill. You'd do well to get both leveled up at some point if you want to stay versatile, but since it seems like you're only taking it to 37, I'd recommend Archery too. the first one is affected by :
1. your ranged weapon and ammo

3. some stats modifier if the calculation is for WS
pDIF is affected by:

2. enemy defense
3. level difference between your character and enemy level
