I discovered I'm not really fond of the mage job classes. Should I just stick with them to get to 30 so I can unlock jobs or should I go ahead and start leveling my melee jobs? | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 04-18-2005, 10:35 AM | #2 (permalink) | | Senior Member Brain of Knowledge Join Date: May 2003 Posts: 1,297 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 0 Thanked 0x in 0 Posts Gil: 1,666 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 1,666 Donate | Well, it depends on what you plan to be. For example, if you plan to be a beastmaster, it is wise to continue WHM to 30, unlock BST, then level BST/WHM. Same if you plan to be BRD or SMN (not really mages)
If you want to be melee, no matter what melee, you should level warrior to at least 30 now, then you are set for a while, whether you chose DRK, SAM, DRG, etc. as your main job. Often times making them hate their job. That being said, if you are truly set on not playing WHM, realize that the other mage classes are very different from it. Now as for what you want to do in the future. The 2 jobs that are used as subjobs more than any others are WHM and WAR. If it is your plan on taking up BRD or SMN (both admitedly are mage classes) then stick with WHM. SMN you will end up just acting as a gimped WHM for a while unless you are lucky enough to catch a party where you can have a little fun with avatars. BRD is a mage, sure you dont have to sub WHM, but if you don't you just are gimping yourself, and you will NEVER do any real dmg in a party. If you decided you want to take up BST, same thing here, you will want WHM.
Now, if you choose DRK, SAM, DRG, MNK, NIN, RNG, THF you will do yourself a favor by leveling WAR. You will need this leveled for DRK, SAM, DRG, MNK, and NIN. While you will need it leveled so you may level your NIN sub for RNG and THF.
In the end it all depends on if you want to get to the "advanced" job you want faster or slower. You WILL get parties in the jungles as WHM, often times rather fast. It will take you a chunk of time to get to 20 as WAR and then getting a party will be slower in the jungle. If you want to get that job you want unlocked as fast as possible, go level whm. If you are just too sick of whm to go on, go war. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 04-18-2005, 12:37 PM | #4 (permalink) | | Pai Pai Lackey Super Moderator Join Date: Feb 2003 Posts: 5,242 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 4 Thanked 29x in 24 Posts Gil: 40,315 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 40,315 Donate | | Quote: | Originally posted by Niwaar Now, if you choose DRK, SAM, DRG, MNK, NIN, RNG, THF you will do yourself a favor by leveling WAR. To set it straight RNG works fine with /NIN and /WAR, the playstyles are different RNG/WAR is actually immensily supperior in damage then RNG/NIN. The only reason some prefer RNG/NIN is that at a few spotty levels they are more accurate and they get Utsusemi so you don't have to worry as much about drawing hate.
The accuracy thing a RNG/WAR can just as easily cover so RNG/NIN isn't really superior in this aspect and not to mention that the accuracy problems start vanishing around 60+ to were the ones you may have accuracy problems you can still cover with food (Works fine since going for extreem power on those mobs generally isn't a good idea, but RNG/WAR will even then still be able to draw out more power then RNG/NIN). The biggest difference between RNG/WAR and RNG/NIN is one focuses hugely on damage and the other focuses a lot on protection.
Anyway with that said yeah WHM and WAR are generally two biggies that work well as a sub for many of the other jobs. Also to add BRD is not exactly Mage he's a bit of an annomalie since the BRD itself has no limitations to MP they only do when they sub something like /WHM which is a sub used often with BRD.
So up to you on what direction you want to go, If you are planning to do a melee type then you probably should raise another melee job to sub to it. My belief is more that which ever combination you use is more determined by your playstyle and abilities. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 04-18-2005, 01:30 PM | #5 (permalink) | | Π Pie Master Super Moderator Join Date: Dec 2002 Location: Roswell, GA Posts: 4,803 Style: Dark - Version 5 Thanks: 112 Thanked 217x in 146 Posts Gil: 82,741 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 82,741 Donate | Moved to Race and Job forum.
