Any of the jobs that will use the Far Eastern-style armor (Monk, Ninja, and Samurai) become extremely expenive beyond the late 30s. Go look up the asking price for a Jujitsu Gi at the Jeuno AH on your server.

And Uroboros is correct, Paladin is by far the cheapest Job in Vana'diel. The most expenive item I've ever been 'required' to buy was my Gluttony Sword, and at 150k Bahamaut seems to be a bargain compared to some other servers.

How is SMN in terms of expenses?

Elemental Staves, mp gear? What else, I don't think more than 1 or 2 elemental spirits would be needed.

Monk is by no means the cheapest out of those.

If you want to gimp yourself to a higher level then, maybe, monk is, then again, you could always be a gimp mage. None of the jobs truely are "cheap". Spells add up (not to mention mage gear)and melee equip doesn't grow on trees.

Anyway you look at it, you'll be farming or fishing or synthing some to get gear, its just a matter of how gimp you want to be or you could try to get decent equip and put in some effort.

Not terribly eloquent, but you've hit the nail on the head.

Between those jobs its pretty much tied between whm and blm imho.

Whm has it incredibly cheap until the mid 50s, even raise 2 (On Middy at least) Isnt that big a deal imho, however past that things start getting painful with nice +mp and refresh equipment as well as a couple of spells (Raise 3 just hit 1.7 mil~ :sweat being absurdly overpriced.

Blms on the other hand, about the only significant expense they have on equipment are eventually HQ staves and Snow rings. However earlier on, spell costs can be pretty painful even when your buying from vendors.

So really it depends how far you want to go.

And if you add in adv jobs, Bard is by far the cheapest, once you've got your HQ instruments out of the way its very easy to go on a tight budget all the way to 75 without being considered gimp.

i feelthe same way, especially about the bard bit, songs are almost always CHEAP and u don't REALLY need all that chr+ gear, so get some staves for songs, some HQ instruements and maybe a few littel perks, its cheap.

MNK is expensive at one stage, but overall, those equips last a lifetime, compared with other job that need to buy equip every level... if you spread it out, MNK isn't all that much expensive compared with other job, but still, the 'hell' is still pretty expensive, as the price is being pumped right now.

WHM or BLM... Mm... they are cheap in a way, most races can just use racial gear til AF(Galka especially), you still perform well without full gears(my friend went with no rings til 60), I think there are a few good wands/rods that last you 10 lvl? O.o; So, only expense would be food+spell.... but if you take how able are they at farming... their cost do seem a lot to their eyes... else, they'd probably be the cheapest basic job.

Blm is honestly pretty cheap to level up. Most of the equipment really isn't necessary to perform decently in a party setting. You only need 2 staves at 51 which are a combined total of less then 300k now. Adding more +int is nice but doesn't make that much of a difference. You can skip all the ancients except for the cheap ones: freeze and burst. Your only requirements are spells and not taking hate. At 60 your major purchases as a blm are basically this:

Ice staff
Dark Staff
Warp II (just quest it)
Sleepga II (gotta buy it)
Drain (quest again)
Aspir (quest!)
Every new spell except ancients (minus freeze and burst, people expect you to have these) and stonega II (which for some reason no one expected me to have on Toramas so I didn't XD)
Food - I use sweet rice cakes or melon pie +1

Unlike melee's armor is semi optional for the gimp route, minus the AF gloves which you should beg plead whine steal to get. More int is nice but if you are a taru your damage naked will be close to most of the other races. Elemental torque helps a lot from 65 to 70, but after that I don't notice much of a difference without it. Honestly you can take the route I took and aquire an elemental staff collection before shooting for a torque. Staves are cheap now and from what I paid for all my staves but my ice and dark (which I got before the elemental ore recipe leak) I think I've paid less then 600k which is the elemental torque price. At 68 you get to buy a black cloak, and at 72 an Errant Hpl. My next purchase will most likely be an elemental torque, then iqqira body, elite beret, and druid's slacks. This is because I want some elemental gear to counter god resistances. Eremite rings serve their purpose from level whenever to 60 ish, morions are semi optional since it's only 2 points of damage, fortune egg is free, black neck is free, druid's rope is so cheap it's pretty much free, and black cape is pretty much free as well. All in all to be a semi competant blm isn't really all that hard or expensive. Now as how to make that money as a blm XD Blm does not farm well (and no, ga farming is not that efficient), fishing just got nerfed even more, so you are left with mining and crafting. Mnk might be better in this regard since you can actually farm decently to support your meager lifestyle lol Whm can play tele-taxi as soon as they can find some LS members to kill some easy mobs for teleport scrolls (well minus Vazhl, that one they'll prolly have to buy until later) Of course, it's far easier to get a party as a gimp blm (as long as you have your spells) then it is as a gimp mnk. Up in the air about gimp whm's since it's really dependant on how well they play and what spells they decided to gimp themselves on (don't gimp yourself on Raise II and try to get Erase as soon as possible). Whm without Raise II at 56 = my friend because my smn will get a party before you.

mages apart from smn are not cheap in real terms, melee can sell armour/weapons etc, mages cant unlearn and sell scrolls.
