Gates of Halvung key

I've read ffxilopedia, I've asked my friends and I can't seem to get a straight answer on how to get the key item to get past the Gates of Halvung.

Sites say check both gates, I know where the obvious one is, but I'm not terribly familiar with how to get to the other one. My friends say the checked only one of the games and were able to get the key item from the various ??? that pop up all over the map.

Well, I tried what my friend did and no dice. There was a ??? near the map quest point, only one I could find at the time. I checked the gate and went back to check the ??? again. Nothing.

This really annoys me since I get invited to Mount Z manaburns all the time on COR, almost everyday I play. And really, its started to be the kind of merit PT I prefer (rather cost effective for me) so I'd like to be able to get past that door without having someone fetch me each time.

After checking the gate you have to find the ??? that is somewhere randomly placed on the map.

It moves after someone checks it, but I don't believe it moves randomly. ffxi-atlas has all the spawn points marked on thier map. I just checked the gate and started traveling to all the possible spawns. Of course it was on the last one that I finally found the ???.

Just make sure you don't zone after checking the gate, otherwise when you find the ??? it won't give you the key item.

i checked the door, found the ??? clicked the key, seeing as i have no map i used ffxi-atlas to get me around finely then fot pasted the gate fot to the trure sight part of the zone got my lvl 50 friend throught with me and then soloed his BLU AF boots ^^, goodluck with it OMGBBQ it can be an ass becouse people clicked and then it resets meaning you have to cheack all the pops again for it

Check the gate (I used the one near the escape point). Run around and check the ??? locations. When you find one, click it. Once you get the key or scrap metal or whatever it's called, you should be able to leave. Just make sure that once you click the gate, you don't leave the zone until you get the key item.

This has been replied to but i would like to clarify:
-You only need to touch the gate once
-There maybe other ???'s in the area, they do affect the quest. If you happen to click on one that does not give the key item just keep searching. you do not have to go back to the gate and check it again.
-You may do quite a bit of running around so bring plenty of powders and oils as the bombs are magic aggro.
-Doing the quest at night is advisable because the crawlers will be asleep and will not aggro.

Can someone post what the key item is and what you do when you get it.
I think i got the key item the other day coming across a ??? just wonder what i have to do to get through the door now or can i just open it with the key item... ??

IIRC, once you have the key item, you can just examine the door and it will open. There's nothing else you need to do.
