Samurai quest

Can a mage become a samurai? Some advanced jobs require you to use certain weapons a mage can't...

any job level 30 can accept the advance jobs quest.
after you complete the quest you switch jobs and use the weapons for that job

Last time I checked mages can't use swords, that means no dark knight...

lol what are you talking about? mages can't use swords - hey you're right - but dark knights can. so, if you want to be a dark knight you must get ANY job to level 30 - do the dark night quest, then you can be DRK and use any of the weapons DRKs can use.

lol u sure were quick to doubt David's comment, perhaps you don't realize that he already has the game and has been playing it for a decent amount of time:sweat:

The Job System

I think the problem is that Frozn doesn't understand how the job system works.

Frozn, in FFXI, you can change your job at any point in the game. When you do the quest for samurai, it unlocks the samurai job for you at level 1. You can then switch to it and level up in it as you would a normal class (you keep your same levels in your other classes, and can switch back at will).

In order to have an "effective" character, generally speaking melee have a melee subjob and mages have a mage subjob.

...

What I was saying is if I lvl up a mage only, then I can't use a sword. To become a dark knight you need to use a SWORD and kill so many monsters.... so I was asking what is required for a samurai

As long as you have any job at least lvl30 and can complete the quest, you can get any of the Advanced and Expansion Jobs. In the case of the Drk Job quest, you can have a lvl30 mage to "accept" the quest, but you need to kill 100 monsters with a 2H sword. The only jobs that can use it are War and Drk so that means you'll have to use your War to "complete" it.

David's kinda funny looking, I would doubt him as well ^_- j/k

What they are saying, basicly, is once you get Dark Knight, you are lvl 1 again aways, so it does not matter what class you were before becoming a Dark Knight.

For example, you were a lvl 30 blm with all sortsa cool spells and items. Once you change to Dark knight, you cannot use ANY of the items or spells anymore. You will be a 1 DRK/ 1BLM now. Your sub class is always half your main class. So if you REALLY wanted you could be a 30 BLM/ 1DRK u.u But erm, why? ^^ Ya know?

Or if your Densetsu, throw all logic out the window and laugh uncontrolably as it somehow works.
