Duo combination

So my mom and I just started and we'll party here and there but for the most part we're going to duo.

We didn't want to play classes that are undesireable in parties so what I'm thinking is this:

My mom is stuck on THF, so she's going THF/WAR to 30 then NIN/WAR to 37 then THF/NIN to 75.

I was trying to find a good combination and I'm thinking WAR/MNK to 37, DNC/MNK to 37, then MNK/DNC when duo or solo and MNK/WAR for Parties.

Would this combination work well?

Would WAR/DNC, WAR/MNK work better for the situations?

Re: Duo combination

DNC is the king of low man parties. Hands down.

I duo with a friend of mine, DNC/NIN THF/NIN.

I, as the DNC, take on the role of tanking to maximize TP gaining and because... well... i'm gonna keep all the hate because of curing.

THF and WAR can both use status bolts and drain bolts (these border on broken...) so they can hold their own and dish out the ouchies damage on the mobs you fight, and I do hope you're not planning on doing IT as your main mobs, especially now that EP and DC mobs give you more EXP... just rampage through a zone full of EP and DC mobs... it's extremely fun!

Subbing DNC is something we have yet to try, we both plan on THF THF duo, atleast one of us, if not both should sub /dnc. I'm looking forward to giving it a try soon... a THF duo is just sexy as hell pulling SA and TA back to back... and those bolts make a huge difference.

So... I guess you're on the right track here, i'm pretty sure any of the combinations you mentioned will work very well in a duo situation.

Things to remember while duoing:
  1. Reraise
  2. FOOD!!!
  3. Teamwork is even more necessary as a duo, you need to be in sync with your partner
  4. Sense of sacrifice - do your best to gain hate when your partner is getting beat... you'd be surprised how many times that saved my duo from wiping horribly!
  5. If you're resting for HP... its either due to a really hard fight or due to a bad setup... maximize your potential by looking at your gear, food, tactic, and mobs...
  6. Drops only divided by 2! yay!
  7. Drinks for Regen... like milks or pear au laits... sometimes help!
  8. If its taking too long to kill... it aint worth it, stick to weaker stuff, kill "more" instead of "harder"
  9. Take pictures

Re: Duo combination

/DNC would give you the tools, but it is also situational, depends on what your Duo is hunting, location, player's skill, tactic, gear, preparation, etc.

As for using /NIN for survival before level 74, without Utsusemi: Ni is incomplete. Even at level 74+ /NIN Utsusemi: Ni offers 3 shadows, unlike 4 shadows which NIN main job gets. Job combo like high level RDM/NIN or NIN/DNC, etc can solo or tank in small parties very well, but other jobs /NIN would not be the same.

As for WAR/DNC or MNK/DNC at low~mid levels, I am not certain because DNC was introduced to this game when both my WAR + MNK was over level 60. But I can tell you that MNK/DNC with Counterstance + decent accuracy + evasion gear does very well in Campaign Battles (which is how I currently solo my exp). While with WAR/DNC I still cannot use most of the WAR's best offensive tools without getting myself killed in Campaign Battles.

Added:
/DNC does not have access to Healing Waltz until level 70 (and Healing Waltz is expensive TP-wise and timer-wise), so pick your preys carefully, or team up with a MP-using job with /WHM

Re: Duo combination

Thf/Nin and Mnk/Dnc should be able to duo Ts with almost no down time from levels 10-75. That combination would work well. You shouldn't actually need Utsusemi:Ni (especially at 65 when Mom can start stealing your hate) and while you can survive a lot, Celeal's right about status effects: avoid nasty status effect-inducing mobs 'til you guys are in your 70s... which is terribly far away. The only problem you guys will have is her not being able to get enough of the mob's attention. Make sure she uses Sneak Attack every chance she gets. That'll help a lot.

And yeah, mnk/war for parties and when you guys hit 60, take some time off. Get gear if you don't have it and level NIN sub for your MNK. If you guys are gonna spend this much time with the duo, I'd also suggest eventually investing in 2 sets of gear. A lot of +acc doesn't help terribly much while duoing, while loads of -evasion and gear with good offensive stats but 20 levels behind in defense values won't be worth it when you'll be tanking most of the time. I'd suggest she keep Marksmanship capped and learn about equip swapping ranged accuracy gear in. Acid/Bloody/Sleep/Blind bolts can all be quite useful.
