My Mood: | Duoing Suggestions?
I've searched for Duoing threads that are NOT nearly two years old and I'm turing to Y'all high lvls for advice. I finally got my hubbie to want to play and we are going to start duoing. I just started playing recently (nooblette) and he will be brand spankin newbie so I'm hoping for some advice on lvling two (one semi) new chars together - Tharongi canyon etc - also what jobs would be suggested? Right now we are thinking a DD and a WHM, but I've already got my char up to BLM 14 - I'd like to go get my subjob and then start lvling WHM when he gets hooked up (waiting for XBOX360 Elites to come back in stock ARGH <_<) - take him high enough to get his subjob then go back and lvl a few jobs before selecting a main and grinding away to 75. RDM too it seems if for nothing else than refresh and Gravity (is that right?) With the expansions, am I missing something? Should we be going/doing something specific, am I nerfed from the start for trying to put together a DD and healer duo? (we want to be able to SC+MB as a Duo, which limits our job selections somewhat). Any suggestions are appreciated! Gong Hay Fat Choi!

WAR and WHM would work well. Or WAR and RDM. Or MNK and RDM. THF and RDM. RDM and BLM, even (you could duo worms once you get high enough for Shakrami). Basically as long as you've got healing and some damage dealing, you're good to go. Honestly, you're not really "missing" anything. Sure, you'd have more options if you both had access to all of the jobs, but you'll be ok.

Trio of melee x2 + mage may make more sense for SC+MB. Not entirely sure if SC+MB style would be worth the trouble for a two or three person operation, since you won't be taking on incredibly tough creatures normally. (BST trio may be different, though, but they don't have very impressive SC or MB options, to my knowledge.) Happy lunar new year to you as well.

Really, if you're interested in duoing I'd suggest that one of you is a RDM, not only can they heal, but they can sometimes be the difference in damage between winning a tough fight and not. Which isn't to say that RDM is an uber-DD, because it's not, but along with the ability to heal, they can toss out some light nukes, DoT spells, and even whack the mob with a sword for a while if they want - and it's usually not terrible sword damage through the mid-20's - and that extra damage could very well end up being what makes your fights go quickly and smoothly. At higher levels, RDM can outlast almost everything, and their survivability in both the front and backline makes them an excellent duo partner to just about any DD job. If you're more interested in using WHM, they're great. I love WHM, it's my second job to 75 and my new main. But keep in mind that WHM really can't deal any extra damage than your DD person in the party. If you need just a little bit more to finish off a mob, your WHM isn't really going to be who you fall back on. Which isn't to say that they're useless or anything, far from it. WHM is just not as good in duo situations, I've found. Even duoing with my BLM friend, on WHM it was much slower than with RDM, because of less damage to be dealt, lower enfeebling magic skill (very handy skill that RDMs have, by the way), and general "squishiness." WHMs are excellent in a full party situation, but in anything less than a trio, they're not going to be great. Keep in mind that if you want to do anything in this game, it can be done, but it will be much more difficult in some situations. Having played both RDM and WHM and having had some duo experience on both, I'd say go with a RDM. The extra enfeebling magic potency, extra potential for damage (in some situations), and the ability to sustain themselves over the long haul makes RDM one of the best duo partners in the game.
