Question Skillup & +attack

Hey all!

My club is currently sitting 50 from cap (at lvl 58) and I want to start raising it now in preperation for pushing to hexa when it's available, and I wondered what difference +attack gear makes in gaining skillups?

I only ask as my whm as a set of equips dedicated to farming/solo stuff, mostly +attack with some +accuracy in there, and I know when I was fighting mobs with bard, a stacked minuet that dropped a mob from high def to [nothing] almost eliminated skillups, and I wondered if there was 'peak zone' for attack? If maybe tweaking equips could provide an optimum range for skillup (10,20,30 points into 'high defence', etc.)

I plan to do some testing in various skillup parties to see how it feels, but wondered if anyone knew anything more than me on this? (That is to say almost nothing...)

Thanks in advance.

Re: Skillup & +attack

Actually, it does =o You skill more when striking a mob that checks as High Def, and adding +Attack decreases the High Def check. That's why crabs are so popular at later lvls of skilling, due to natural crab stat traits (Higher Def). So typically the best setup for skilling is low attack/dmg and high high accuracy. The only time when dmg and attack are wanted is when you're at a point where your strikes are hitting for 0 dmg. You can't skill off 0 dmg hits =\

um, the /check description is based on your NET accuracy and attack vs mobs NET evasion and defense. It is not directly related to skill (see spider-dan's post in rng forum).

that being said, i notice no real correlation to the /check description and skillups. you get more bang for your buck comparing levels (eg level of mob vs your skill cap).

Umm ... we've been through this before. Either way is correct, you're harping on semantics and dragging that stupid argument here needlessly. If I were you, I'd not mention that dumb post.

I agree. You can get skillups as long as the monster is even matche con or better. However, typically the skill up is faster on T level mobs or higher, considering that the monster ends up lasting a lot longer to get consistent skillups. Which comes back to having too much attack and a high damage modifier. What you want is high accuracy, low damage and low attack (But not so low that you're only hitting for 0 dmg, like the post above NT's post stated)

I should know. Been into at least 30+ hours worth of skillups from everything from Toramas to Bune. LOL

Re: Skillup & +attack

I think it's actually more like a mob will give you skillups until you reach the skill level that you would be capped at if you were the same level as the mob. For example, if you're level 75 and have 0 skill in say staff, you can still get a skillup from hitting a Bumblebee in Sarutabaruta.

Re: Skillup & +attack

Thanks for the replies guys, the post in ranger forum made good reading too. The main reason I asked about switching out attack gear was some posts I'd seen elsewhere arguing fighting things well above your skill level gave slower but bigger (0.5) skillups wheras things closer to your level gave smaller but more frequent skillups.

Is that kind of stuff founded or just an 'urban legend'?

Re: Skillup & +attack

No, that's definately true. I was in a skillup party in Oztroja the other night fighting things that were so IT to me that some of my hits were doing 0 damage. I got very few skillups (maybe one or two out of three fights) but whenever I got one it was 0.4 or 0.5 skill.

The best bang for your buck in my experience is fighting Ts. Good skillup rate, not too hard to hit, and you can always reach your caps. Only problem is fighting something that won't maul you if you're solo or will live long enough to count if you're in a pt.
