Re: Checking others w/o asking? Rude or not?

Guess you'd have to put me with the group that thinks it to be rude. It isn't a matter of the notification but more of the respect in requesting first. You've got to remember (especially if you ever happen to be the liason for you company doing business to a Japanese company) the Japanese are huge on respect. There's a whole procedure on how you should act when metting with them for the first time, it's like freaking 12 or 20 steps or something.

Here's what I always thought was a good example of the difference. Here in the US if you have business cards and you give one to someone would you be offended if they decided to use it as a toothpick? would you be offended if they constantly had to reffer to the card to say your name? would you be offended if the stuffed the card in their left back pocket of their pants? etc...

In Japanese all of those I said they'd be insulted by it. To them the business card is an extention of themselves, they expect the card to be treated like they themselves would be. The similar philosophy translates to the game as well, they expect the players to act in the same manner of respect. /checking someone without requesting first has a similar relation of say grabbing some PSP from them without asking to see it first, or taking the jacket off their back to look at without requesting.

May not seem that extreem to us in the US and such but to the JP it is.

Re: Checking others w/o asking? Rude or not?

yes, stuff you mentioned is disrespectful and I agree, however I relate /check to as if someones reading my shirt, or is a beautiful lady comes into your workplace and you /check her and notice she's got a big diamond ring, is that disrespectful? Noticing, No... asking her out after you know, Yes.

I i wore a college shirt and people read it.... well, I'm going to quit now, but this is probably why I'll never understand it, if the Japanese don't like it.... why did they put it in the game or have it only work for MOBs? They have it so that every debuf can work on a player but not the mob, "fixing" the check function would be much easier.

/config "Allow others to /check you: Yes, No, Permission Required"

Problem fixed!

Re: Checking others w/o asking? Rude or not?

I don't find /checking to be disrespectful in general, but some people do use it in a disrespectful fashion. For example, spam checking is annoying as hell. That is a sure fire way to get on a blacklist. Another common thing I see, is that people will usually /check you to show their anger, like if you started camp at the same NM as them. I guess my point is, if you don't think /checking is disrespectful, stop using it as a sign of anger or disrespect. Then people may stop being irritated by it. If you're just going to /check me out of spite, then that's not using the game function properly, and I'd suggest you refrain, because then its just spamming.

Re: Checking others w/o asking? Rude or not?

Yeah, people still check in starter gear, also fishing and mining gear. I've even seen high level players do this which seems awkward. I just wonder do people really care or are they just doing it to fill up a split second of their time while they choco across west ron?

If you don't have the imagination to know how this item can be used then kindly refrain from commenting. It isn't an easy item to acquire, but it does have its uses, and there are people who know how to work around its hidden drawback.

Thank you for the enlightenment. I'll be a much better player/gamer because I'll no longer be rude to anyone for any reason. Thank you so much.
A simple :

/tell <whoever> /check ok?

...will usually suffice to satisfy your curiosity.

But whatever. It's obvious that you'd rather be informed and rude than try and be civil, and nothing I say here will change your opinion.

Re: Checking others w/o asking? Rude or not?

It seems like some people are just being stubborn here. It's a frame of mind whether or not checking somebody is rude. Now, on this thread we have multiple people saying they find it rude, and also some which don't find it rude. I have not seen one person yet say its rude to NOT check somebody. So, by logic, we offend the least people by not checking anybody at all. If you find yourself eaten up by curiosity so much, that you HAVE to check somebody; you stand the least chance of being offending by asking first. Arguing with my or anybody else's opinion on /checking will not change the fact that you WILL offend somebody if you do it enough. That's all people are saying here, just trying to help everyone get along better...

If someone gets offended because I /checked them, they can just pull the corncob out of their ass. There's a filter for the text. Use it.

Doesn't annoy me, I just find it sad most NA are so gear-fixated that /examine has become the new, "Hello" when you run across someone in the middle of an empty zone. I don't really want to be involved in the whole NA teen circle-jerk gear appreciation crowd.

Obvious. I was being sarcastic. I was just saying If you know how, how do you know no one else does? it's pointless bringing up a subject where you're the only one right and everyone is wrong, in rl it can get you commited.

surprisingly enough, i must have been only half-sarcastic in the end of my post, b/c I have done a bit less checking, but it has been more of, seen that before, yada yada. when I first started and saw people /anon I'd /check in order to guess thier job. that was something i grew out of long ago though.

I had it filtered long ago. It's annoying, so I rather just choose to ignore it for a peace of mind.

Re: Checking others w/o asking? Rude or not?

Turning off the messages for the /checks just means you are ignoring it. It doesn't matter if I see the message or not it's the principle in the whole thing. Just boils down simply that I would preffer to be granted the same respect as I would do to you. It doesn't matter if you think it to be alright, the fact you won't respect my equipment by requesting first means you have no respect for me.

Also it is pretty rude, because you are assured with those that /check a good handful will have an elitist attitude and think they know best on gear and put down what you have. That's more then reason enough to not do it, why stress the player on the other end expecting that someone is possibly going to insult their playstyle or choice.

Re: Checking others w/o asking? Rude or not?

heh, Match you act like someone is peeping into your house in real life. I could see getting pissed off if you were MPKed because that directly affects your character (and you) in some way. That IS a lack of respect and is just plain rude and mean. /check does what? Brings up 1 little line of text on your window? /shrug Everyone is entitled to their thoughts on it and its all personal taste. Not trying to shoot you down.
