Checking people isn't rude.

Checking people repeatedly is.

Swearing at people for checking you is even ruder.

Trying to PvP someone for checking you is just stupid, but will probably end up happening. :-)

I check on the following occasions:
  • when I've just been checked by the person;
  • when I'm being invited by someone in view who isn't giving any info about their party;
  • anonymous people who seem to be having trouble (hey, I figure I have the right to guess the lowest level they can be);
  • anyone with a bazaar when I have a decent amount of money;
  • anyone with the Seek flag up; and
  • people with LS colors similar to the LS I'm in (I don't know everyone in my LS, if they're in view it's worthwhile to see if they are actually in my LS).

OT: I think everyone needs macros for:
/em synthesizes 6 cold beers.
and
/em uses a cold beer.

At least, if they can spare the macro space. :-)

except for being checked since i have my check filter turned on, since i couldnt care less, it was just more spam on my screen.

i see someone
/em thinks "hmm is that PLD AF? it's not like i can check the AH to be sure"
/em checks <t>!

yeah, rude. I see! ... no, i don't.

or WOW that looks so cool! what is is? they wont tell me and it's rude to /check... guess i'll never find out. many of my equipment purchases are seeing someone with it and then knowing what to look for in AH. I didnt even know it was rude till i /checked one of my rl friends wearing some new gear and got mad b/c they were taking it personally, like i was actually checking them out, or b/c that's the way the japanese do it so they do it.

FFXI has A LOT of "all races" "all jobs" at level 1, plus a lot of level 1 gear that is race or gender specific that is all jobs. when i go /anon (true /anon) i run around in lvl 1 rse or fielding garb or now bathing suit or my lords.. or whatever... the one that doesnt help w/ goldfishing. otherwise i wear my equipment and my pimp'in boots and not go anon (normal).

one cool thing about the filter is when i see:

/em examines you.

or like Tidane's macro and see people freaking out. i just chuckle.

The message is worded with a negative connotation, as if the person you're checking did something wrong, so that's one reason they don't like being checked. I think it's something to the effect of "soandso peers intently at you".

Imagine if the check message in the NA client was "soandso glares at you" each time you get checked. It can get tiring after a while.
i did not know that

in that case i would consider it rude, i hate it when someone i dunno runs by me and slaps me lol so i wouldnt like it if iwas bein glared or peered at intently lo

but personally i dont mind bein checked , i have heard that some people dont , so as a rule i only check bazaars just to keep from bein on someones S list lol

I don't think it's rude to /check. If you are an individual who dislikes being checked, turn off your notice.

Re: Checking others w/o asking? Rude or not?

I don't like being checked but I think its just a woman thing. Feels kind of violating, like a peeping tom. So I just use the filter and I never know.

But on the other hand, I know how it makes me feel so I don't like to check others. If I feel I absolutely have to, I will either check them without asking or I will ask. Depends on the situation really and if I know the person or not. But it doesn't happen often, I rarely check people.

Re: Checking others w/o asking? Rude or not?

It seems JP still won't check people that much, but they don't seem to care as much about getting checked or just don't say much anymore since NA have been playing so long now. I remember it was a lot bigger of an issue when I first started than it is now. I think it's ridiculous if anyone is offended by being checked, although I'll admit sometimes I'm a hypocrite about it; if a known punk or gil buyer/seller checks me once in a while I'll hit my meditate macro to swap out gear.

Re: Checking others w/o asking? Rude or not?

it's still common for japanese not to check. Not that they don't mind but they seem to get used to now. When checked they still mention something along the line as "he checked me. gotta be foreigner"

Re: Checking others w/o asking? Rude or not?

I used to get all uppity about being checked and checking others I would basically always take the time out to ask other people if it was okay for me to check them before actually checking them. But you know what? After doing that about 5 billion times it just started to be too much trouble for me -_- Now I just check whenever and it doesn't bother me at all when I'm checked by others. It's almost like I became desensitized to it after a while x_x

All the JP ppl me included /blush after being checked we could give a crap less. Like i said if It bothered me that much I could just turn off the notices.

Re: Checking others w/o asking? Rude or not?

Put me in the minority of players who think /checking without asking is rude. I won't /check someone except under the following conditions:

- The are dead AND /anon and I need to know what level they are so I can cast the appropriate Raise spell. If they aren't /anon I just use /search to look up their level.

- They ask me specifically.

- They /check me first.

- They have bazaar and are in a location that would be a good place to sell stuff (towns).

- They are doing something annoying (MPK, killstealing, etc. and I want to see what LS they belong to so I can avoid it in the future).

I don't really care what other people are wearing, as long as they're effective if they're doing something with me. For my own gear, there's plenty of places to do research on gear which is way better than looking at what someone is wearing.

This is specially true when you don't know why they are wearing it; case in point, Toreador Cape. If you /checked someone wearing one of these you'd want one, but you'd be sorely disappointed when you discovered its hidden +50% enemy critical hit rate. There are also a large number of players who are misinformed about game mechanics and wear strange gear because they simply don't know any better, so /checking people on the off chance that you might learn something new is a dubious argument.

I also check to make sure I'm raising the whm first since they'll need to sneak/invis pt members.

I guess if I were to run across you and see you in 70+ whm gear and think "what the heck is that you're wearing?" I'd have to <alt><tab> out of FFXI, whoops, you can't! ahem quit playing for the week or longer because I'll have search the net for a picture (since i have no idea what it's called) and hope i come across your gear not knowing what i'm looking for exactly. since I'm on this website it's assumed I have a pc connected to the net. I'm at work right now. PS2 users don't have that option, and no, the strat guide doesn't show an avatar wearing each piece of armor for one to know how it looks in game.

iirc it's in a catagory for example
feet:
Warlock Boots RDM52 DEF:13 MP:+11 Shield +10 Water+10

This isn't even in AH so an aspiring rdm on ps2 and doesn't work where they have internet access, without being rude has no idea what the red boots some people wear is for?
So you're telling them they have to spend money on an incomplete strat guide or buy a pc and search for it on the net? Yet all thier questions can be answered by a simple /check?
This doesnt even take into account the other slots the 9/16 that don't even show on your avatar.

Why would you knowingly wear something with a +50% crit chance rate? If you assume or know everyone else in the game has no idea of the game mechanics, why even consider bringing up such a subject? Moot point.

I guess w/o checking someone I'm supposed to keep my head burried and have nothing to look foward to that isnt in AH, unless I'm rude, I'll have no idea what else is out there.

Thank you for the enlightenment. I'll be a much better player/gamer because I'll no longer be rude to anyone for any reason. Thank you so much.
