| Junior Member | Starting Skill-up Parties
Is there an accepted way of setting up Skill Up parties that doesn't include spamming the surrounding regions with requests? So few NA players use search comments, or read them, that it makes it difficult to attract their attention that way. I ask because I unwittingly let my Great Axe skill lay dormant until just now, and I fear that I've reached the peak of what solo skilling can effectively generate. I'm sure that it's unacceptable to use XP parties to skill my great axe (it's at 40 at level 23) as it would likely get the group killed. Or is it?

I will generally solo a new weapon skill until it reaches level 10 or 20 and then go join my parties. At least by then I have at least one weapon skill and my accuracy with the weapon is improved. Once I get into a party and start fighting VT and IT monsters, then the skill level climbs VERY quickly. I did this with my Great Axe when I first got it, and at first I wasn't too satisfied with it, but after maxing out my G.Axe skill, I don't know why I used any other weapon before it! Of course, I have to skill up my other weapons for my adv jobs and for renkei versatility. Just gotta level up my polearm a little more and get my scythe skills up.

Heh, sounds like my concern was without reason then.. wish I hadn't soloed G. Axe to 40  Hope my lower skill doesn't cause me to miss in a renkei, might cause some... anger

I do similar to kurgan, but I usually get to teh 2nd ws or at least really close. 1 ws makes it hard to get a good renkei that is strong to the monster and/or ends on a lv2, and that a blm can burst on at lower levels.

Personally I think you should level your weapon within 10 levels of the skill cap minimum, more is better, before you use it in a PTm the exception being your lower skill weapon outperfroms the higher skill one for some reason. BTW war with 2haxe should try to start most fights with shield break imo. This WS does low dmg BUT dramatically lowers the enemy's evade....its better than bard's madrigal(accuracy up for PT). Sure maybe the 10-30dmg isnt too impressive...but when everyone starts landing most of their hits rather than miss miss miss youll see how good it is. Personally if a certain weapon is needed for PTs and I need to skill it up, I'll solo stuff until I have maxed it out~~ I.E. lv1-10 I soloed with dagger...then realized thf with grapples is better for the PT, switched to grapples, skilled them up to max, joined PTs with grapples until lv33, now and then I'd have to use a 1h sword I kept skilled up, once at 33 I soloed until I caught dagger back up so I could use viper bite~ Imo, LV pts shouldnt be used for skilling up as you are slowing down the exp of 5 other people which in my book is pretty selfish~~ (One time I did join a PT having a low skilled weapon...but only because I was the designated tank and after buying 100k of equipment for my war and using def kabobs my maxed 1h sword was doing a whole 0 dmg while my under lv axe did 8-10 when it hit from the lack of attack up equips in place of def up stuff although i could have done more dmg if i had a skilled up axe i didnt feel too bad since I had 40-60 more def than anyone else in that PT~) Edit~~ If anyone wants good skill up spots I'll post some. I got throwing from 0-103 solo. Btw ive gotten skill ups on my dagger on ’š“x/decent challenge, and its always maxed until I lv meaning Šy/easy prey and stuff slightly below that can skill you up for a long time~

I usually wait for some event with a huge monster with a level cap. That way I can buy a level 1 weapon of that type and switch to warrior and hack away and watch the skill levels go up by .5.

Many people lvl their skills when doing Genkai Item Farming or Coffer Key farming.

How close to your level cap can a weapon skill get on easy / too weaks? I've gotten my Great Axe to ~55 at level 29 on easies, but the skill-ups are getting rather far apart and the down time is on the rise.

well, i find that as soon as the mobs stop checking as "high defense," your skill-ups are gonna slow down. That's not to say you won't gain skill ever, but it'll be like what you are experiencing. I usually stop when i get it to few points less than the lvl cap of my prior lvl (i.e. in your case 28) and work on the rest in a PT.

Looks like I was giving up too quickly then... I think my cap is ~86-88 at 28.. Ah well! :p

hmm, maybe not. I've only been using my tactic up to lvl 16. After that, I lvl'd my 2 weapons at the same time while in PT. I don't know how well it would work at your level cause my WAR hasn't gotten there yet. It might very well be that it becomes very hard to do cause even the easy mobs get hard. Check the skill-up chart in the link rico posted. It gives a very good idea of what you should be hunting for gaining skill. edit: sorry if this post is hard to understand. i think i need my second shot of coffee for the day. |
