Re: Melody's Melodramatic Meltdown on Mitt Romney (Tounge Twister?)

Wasn't there an economist one time that said something along the lines that dissociation of effort and reward leads to economic collapse?

If anything, that's common sense, and why we all know that communism doesn't work--no matter how little effort you put into the system, you were rewarded all the same.

And yes, it's true that America is suffering a dissociation of effort and reward right now . . . but unlike what the far-right noisemakers want you to believe, it's actually due to overzealous capitalism instead of any sort of socialism. No matter how much effort you put into the system, you're not going to be given a proportional compensation. Though wages have increased in the past few decades, they're actually short of meeting inflationary rates. Class mobility is at a low, the middle class is shrinking, and much like Romney (who is admittedly a more extreme example), the rich are getting richer off of naught but their capital gains!

If we should be yelling at anybody to get to work to get our economy moving again, it's not the impoverished who are already struggling to hold on to 2-3 jobs--it's the rich who have more money than they know what to do with!

Libraries are now up for debate. Maintaining old ones is one thing, building new libraries is a bit redundant with the decline of print. We'll always need print as a back-up, I guess, but building libraries probably should be on the decline in years to come.

Schools - go look at Chicago. The only answer to fixing them is really letting private schools compete with them. And don't give me this BS about corporate agendas or indoctrination because public schools already do good deal of political indoctrination. I knew of a Latin professor that was quite a bit of a cock, thought he was above the rest of the language department because he used to teach at Wake Forest. Used to. Called the Spanish students the future fast food employees of America, as I recall. Student newspaper had opinions to the contrary as I recall and he had to trot out one of his student drones to debate it for "fairness." They were wrong of course and the principle and school board would not make him apologize for insulting students and teachers alike nor could they remove him because he was teacher with tenure.

People like that... they need to face competition. Really face it because that guy put too much value in his history and not the future of his students. And I knew teachers that went above and beyond to engage students that deserved better than that fuckwit did, but were younger with less tenure.

Tenure is a nice idea in theory, but a bad idea in execution. It retains the sort of flaws inherent to a point system or DKP in an MMO endgame guild. That whole "I deserve this because I stood in this zone longer than you did" thing. The reward of time over talent or innovation is a bad investment and its not how most public sector jobs work. Time investment does not mean you're dedicated - I can show up on time at work and punch the clock, but that's just me showing up, not dedication. Dedication is improving what you do and there are plenty of examples of the public education system not even trying to do that.

Re: Melody's Melodramatic Meltdown on Mitt Romney (Tounge Twister?)

My point was in a more broad sense in that "socialism" is what a (democratic) government is in essence. If the Republicans truly believed in abolishing "redistribution", there wouldn't be any taxes at all.

I just can't stand it when people get dismissive of the left, usually out of ignorance. I know I might come off that way, but I'm *not* dismissive or against conservatism - I'm against the prevalent extremism that's been exhibited by the Republicans that began with Nixon and has gotten steadily worse (tea party).

And you're probably right about Libraries, sadly. I still think it's a good idea to invest in current ones and keep them updated as technology advances, but there doesn't seem to be much need to the construction of new ones. My point was again, that Libraries are funded by tax dollars (and were Ben Franklin's idea, so I guess he's a socialist in FOX's eyes) - something that seemed to escape Glen Beck in a rather hilariously stupid statement he made a while back (He was ranting about social justice & Hitler, and how he educated himself "for free" at the Public Library.... /facepalm)

Oh and then there was Craig T. Nelson who on FOX News, made his own brilliant statement "I was on food stamps and welfare and nobody ever gave me any help!"

We're actually bombing Pakistan? Freaking news to me. I could be mistaken, but so far as I see,
Are we not yet still sending them millions, that militants use to incite civilians?
Pakistan's shown themselves clearly our foe; weren't they the ones harboring Bin Laden, O.?
Yet so far as I've heard, there's been no striking back: Libya's the one who went under attack!
The point yet remains, quite clear to any eyes, that Obama holds "Most Ironic Peace Prize"
And do feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Thus concludes all of the contents of this song.

I can't stand it when people are dismissive of the tea party because they are a group that is primarily discontent more with the republican establishment, just like the occupy movement is rather discontent with those on the left and the right. I wish they'd stop gobbling up the bullshit that drops out of a liberal's ass each time they baselessly peg them as racist, homophobic and such because they are not one unified group, but one that may consist of disenfranchised democrats, independents, libertarians and conservatives that to come to realize Republicans really don't embrace their values and wish to change that.

They don't agree on everything, but they do agree on the idea that career Democrats and Republicans overspend and underbudget which is kind of what got us into all of this shit to start with - not just a president.

I've said from the beginning some of the sentiments they embody aren't all that wrong, but the majority of what they show on TV (and probably because it sells) are crazy, racist ignorant assholes. It doesn't help that most of the tea party candidates that won last time around in 2010 are also pretty extreme.

It goes both ways though lol...

I cringed when I saw some of the occupy shots... I swear at one point on CNN, there was a goddamn drum circle going on in the background - an actual drum circle! @_@; Everyone interviewed was the stereotypical "College Know-it-all Hippie" like in that southpark episode ><

My issue with the Tea Party isn't the fact that they disagree with the Republican establishment. It's the acrimonious tone they use. It's not constructive, it's not helpful, and it gets us nowhere as a nation.

You can't govern a nation without at least some compromise, and of all of the major splinter factions in modern American politics, the Tea Party is the least willing to give an inch on any issue (followed very closely by their spiritual equivalents in the Occupy movement).

I think its important to also point out that the Tea Party people that aren't willing to compromise are largely baby boomers headed for retirement and want to hold sway over the culture while they still can, Younger Tea Party members are more accepting and willing to compromise, particularly on social issues (which really means they're closet libertarians).

Younger Occupiers, however, are idealistic, but naive in the way the world actually works. Half of them got out of college and instantly saw they never had a chance with college educations - kinda like in Greece but with less social unrest and less actual bathing. Older Occupiers from their 30s to 40s I'm a touch more sympathetic toward because they they see the bullshit baby boomer Tea Partiers spew as just that - bullshit. And its that bullshit they want changed in corporate culture and on social issues. I think many of them are closet Green Party or possibly Libertarians as well - the just don't know how articulate themselves as such because they really want the Democrat/Republican thing to work so they don't feel excluded.
