      This week in aribitrary law/regulation-making...

Last week, the FDA decided to regulate how much salt went into foods. I'm sure there are good intentions, but I think I could have handled that myself, thanks. Maybe regulate how much goes on tortilla chip,. maybe, but thats about it.

Earlier this week, California suggested a ban on Happy Meal toys to prevent childhood obesity. The logic is kids want the Happy Meal for the toy. Dunno about that, even as a kid I was more about the French Fries and the cheeseburger, but then, I wasn't getting NES cartridges out of Happy Meals. Maybe that would have changed my opinion.

But not to be outdone by by Califonria, the city of Kure Beach, NC has banned thongs.

What North Carolina town has banned thongs? | thongs, banned, town - Local News - The Star Online : The Newspaper of Cleveland County

      Sisqo am disappoint.

Now, I can see the merit in this to a degree. There are people that shouldn't wear thongs, but they're going to show up further south. They're going to terrorize Myrtle Beach, SC or maybe Florida beaches. People who think they're hot stuff are going to strut it in a popular place.

NC beaches are beautiful, but not popular for the reasons other beaches are. I've never been to Kure Beach, but I live in NC and I've been out to Nags Head and Kitty Hawk many times. The sand dunes are part of the attraction out here. As I understand it, Kure Beach has them, not as prominently as those areas, though.

There's that historic side to it, too. You know, the Wright Brothers tested their plane concepts out here. That's what Kitty Hawk is famous for. Its really windy in that area. We go fly kites and hanglide at the dunes, the beach is lovely but its little other than sunbathing and photograph material. Its not a hot surfing or boarding spot.

The kids are going to want to go to the dunes and no one with a thong is going to want to be near the dunes. That sand is so fine it gets everywhere you don't want it to if you're not careful. I think the kids are safe in this case.

Okay, this is just getting silly now.

I'm not entirely against the govt regulating certain things, and you'd be amazed at the salt content in a lot of things it's almost scary really. But this is just retarded.

Thongs? Really? In what possible way is wearing a thong hurting anyone? I mean, don't some beaches actually have some sort of dress code if it's a family location? And if not that would be a lot more sensible than some arbitrary law.

Generally I only support this sort of thing if it's really going to make an important difference in people's lives and preferably intruding as little (if at all) on anyone's freedom. This is not the case here. This is clearly the result of some over-protective parent bitching.
