Questions for PS3 owners and A/V geeks (reconsidering buying)
A few different questions

1- The PS3 apparently doesn't have a DVI-out port. Does anyone use the PS3 with a DVI monitor? For the more A/V inclined, will the PS3 work on a 1680x1050 monitor, and will speakers that hook up to a headphone port work with PS3?

2- For people using linux on PS3, specifically Ubuntu, is there anything I should be aware of other than RSX being locked out and it using PPC? How well does it run things like firefox, and music players? If you don't mind, would you download rRootage and tell me how well it runs? Are there are any problems using USB flash drives and hard drives?

3- Does anyone have experience with upgrading the hard drive? Specifically, will a 7200RPM HDD or even an SSD show a significant improvement in loading screens and such, or is the system mostly the same?

4- Lastly, one anyone with a PS3 can answer, what games would you recommend for long lasting experiences, preferably with great online multiplayer? I'm assuming Warhawk, Oblivion, and the like all have a long playtime and value.

The PS3 doesn't have a DVI-out, but it's easy enough to get a HDMI -> DVI converter. Just make sure you get the right flavor of DVI connectors (there's 4 different DVI connector types, with different pins)

Can't say anything about this since I don't run Linux on my PS3.

Depends on the application. For games that make little to no usage of the HDD, you won't notice much of any difference. For some games (particularly downloadable content), you notice maybe 10-20% speed increase. Whether that's worth the extra expense is up to you.

Great online multiplayer/long playtime:

Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (includes Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles)
Warhawk (if you're into third person shooters at all)
Call of Duty 4 (excellent online FPS)
Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection (PSN download, it's Tekken with online, lobbies and voice chat)
Rock Band (waaay better online than Guitar Hero)

If you're into user generated content in a big way, Unreal Tournament III might be just as good a pick as Call of Duty 4.

There's also the upcoming LittleBigPlanet, which no PS3 owner should miss.

Well, I personally hate loading screens in any form except the one when starting a game (think GTA series), so yeah it would probably be worth it.

To make it clearer, the new PC I've been working on for a year has just exhausted my patience, so I'm considering getting a PS3 to use as a desktop computer. I've been playing most of my games on consoles anyway, so I figure it might work.

Re: Questions for PS3 owners and A/V geeks (reconsidering buying)
There won't be any noticeable improvement from upgrading to a 7200rpm HDD. I asked a Resistance dev on NeoGAF and I think the simplified version for idiots like me was that the games are programmed to load on a 5200rpm speed and won't see any advantage...or something like that. But I do know for certain that there isn't any improvement for games. I do highly recommend upgrading though, even if you're only playing games. Capcom sucks and wants everyone to have to install their games (they say they wanted their 360 versions to do it too), and there are other games that require hefty installs, or have a lot of customizable or downloadable content (UTIII, Oblivion, etc.).

My top recommendations for PS3 games are as follows. These are games that you simply must not miss if you own a PS3.

#1 - Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
#2 - Warhawk (best multi-player experience on the console, IMO, especially for 4-player split-screen online)
#3 - Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
#4 - Resistance: Fall of Man
#5 - Gran Turismo 5 Prologue
#6 - echochrome
#7 - PixelJunk Monsters
#8 - Super Stardust HD

Aside from that, I do highly recommend FolkLore, Unreal Tournament III, Devil May Cry 4 and Call of Duty 4, and I would certainly recommend playing MotorStorm, but the sequel is just a few months away.

In the coming months, look to WipEout HD, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, SingStar and echochrome NA versions, obviously Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and much more. 2008 will be a good year to pick one up for games and Blu-ray purposes, though I can't comment much about Linux usage. You'll have to do further research on that.

Just some quick info on 7200rpm that's been tested on a PS3:

Feature: 7200rpm Vs. 5400rpm: Does PS3 hard drive speed matter? for PS3 on GamePro.com.

I would imagine any game that caches to the hard drive (Devil May Cry 4, Oblivion, etc.) would see at least "some" impact from a faster HDD.

Personally I don't see how that's possible. Unless you have some sort of magical machine, the official time from Capcom is roughly 21 minutes, and everyone I know had around that install time.

4. I really like the fighting games ps3 will eventually have. For now Tekken 5 is the only good fighting game for me on there right now.

Stardust is fairly addicting and really awesome if you have a high quality monitor or HD cuz the background graphics is nuts.

FFxi runs the same as ps2 but with less lag, not that there is never lag.

You can download demos of most the new and upcoming games from psn with a ps3 and give them a spin before going to spend money on it. After playing the demo of Devil May Cry 4 I was really impressed. Some of the demos are so good that I haven't even deleted them yet, like the stardust, Ill eventually buy it.

Re: Questions for PS3 owners and A/V geeks (reconsidering buying)
NHL 08 is really great if you enjoy hockey games, i acctually bought a PS3 and xbox360 around the same time to see which one Id go with, i have since sold said 360 as the PS3 is graphically dominant. NHL 08 is pretty fing fantastic, as are all the sport games (which offer 100% replay value) The AI, is incredibly smart and forces you to change your play style as each game goes on. The new additions to player control allow you to dip (deke) other players out with incredible moves. between the legs, around the back, stutter steps just to name a few. The new shootout mode allows for near 100% customization of shots, and dekes anything to make a goalie look bad. Pre made plays you can customize allow for precision with other player, the AI will follow set paths to get through a particular defense and you can hit them with the open pass. Slap pass, saucer pass have all been updated to allow for tip ins fake shot passes to mave the puck. The players will work to cycle the puck (work it around the boards - the point) and are more agressive, they will set picks, slip into open holes etc just like a real game.

Really this to me is the pinicale of the ps3 right now i own rfom, fear, heavenly sword, Tekken, and warhawk and often times NHL dosent leave my console. Its great for parties, playing alone, hell its even good enough to just through on a game with 2 computer teams going at it, the game is real enough if your board doing something you can have a simulated "reallife" hockey game going on at any time. But I am canadian and love my hockey. (works with Madden, and NBA of you like that stuff too)

Impossible. Capcom claims 21 minutes, and that's almost on the dot exactly how long it took my copy of DMC4 to install to my PS3.

PS3's best game is Uncharted, no contest. If you buy the console, you must get Uncharted.

Be aware though, that even if you do get an HDMI --> DVI converter and use a PS3 on your monitor, everything will be stretched vertically. 1680x1050 is 16:10 aspect ratio, and no console supports that. There's no way to get around that, to my knowledge.

Re: Questions for PS3 owners and A/V geeks (reconsidering buying)
Small question, I know bluray won't play nice with HDMI->DVI converters because of HDCP, but PS3 titles still work in high def without HDCP compatibility right?

I'm looking at the PS3 again; a lot of it will probably depend on MGS4, and the price is probably still too restrictive, but I'd at least like to know that.

If your monitor is HDCP-compliant over DVI, it's a non-issue.

If it isn't, things get a little trickier, but you can still bypass the problem using something like this:
Hack: Strip PS3 Blu-ray Copy Protection
