I put my time off request for Halloween in the system in May.

I requested time off starting at 0001hours on Wednesday, October 31st ranging until 1900hours on Thursday, November 1st.

Someone please explain to me how I was scheduled on Tuesday from 1900 and working until 0600hours on Wednesday morning? OH FUCK NO. Halloween is the only fucking holiday I care about and I put this time off five months in advance. There is no fucking way I am working that shit. They are going to have to figure something else out. I am not fucking working during my approved time off.

I get this at christmas. All the senior staff get the main christmas days completely off. xmas eve, xmas day, boxing day, new years eve and day.
Everyone else with kids works half shifts and spreads out between those days.
But singles or gay people with no kids like myself are expected to work a complete shift and almost guarantee'd on the main days.
Last year I flipped my lid after seeing the staff lists considering I put a request in like yourself months in advance and was granted.
Eventually I partly caved but I got my own way sort of and made it fairer.
I said I dont have children that believe in santa or have kids to put to bed, so I'll work late on xmas eve.
I dont have children to see open presents or to cook a dinner but I do have a family just like everybody else, I'll work xmas day early shift only. that's only a 9 hour break between shifts.
Boxing day I'll do the same as xmas day as like everybody else I have a family too but not much to do.
new years eve I dont have children but I do have friends and a life so I'll be going out and getting wrecked so I also wont be in at all on new years daybecause I'll be too hungover to care for patients.

I then told them if they dont like that arrangement to not bother to put me on duty at all because I plainly just wont show up. Before they tried to mention abandonment of duty I informed them they wouldnt have a leg to stand on if I took it to a tribunal and they had no right to favour themselves and friends in the staffing lists.

I ended up getting the list done again and everyone seemed happy except those that were lucky enough to be close to the senior staff to get favours.
I'd already said that on days like christmas day the bus services don't run at all so I'd have to taxi, Taxi's charge triple time on their fare, We don't get double/triple time so paying that fare in a taxi would actually cost me money to work and I'd be working for no money at all so I didn't think it is fair for me to work all of those shifts so it was no wonder that I kicked off over it.

But after that I was asked to be the unison representative for my department.

You wouldn't believe the arguments I've gotten into because married losers with kids think everything in their lives is more important somehow.

It usually ends up with me calling their bluff with examples of just how I'm way more responsible than they are and that neither I nor anyone else has to pay for their stupidity and their lack of planning. Or for their inability to support and make time for a family they were never qualified to have in the first place. They usually revert to children behavior most of the time, but since they know they can't beat me on a fight they usually just run away with their tails between their legs.

Now, don't get me wrong. I don't mind people with obligations, and I can understand the burden and the stress a family can be. But they better not try to make themselves look like these heroic martyrs who are entitled to have a preference over everyone else just because they weren't smart enough to use protection or because they thought their family would be like the ones on TV with 4 kids happily living in a comfy paradise forever and ever.

If they are in a dire need for something family related they better be humble about it and understand everyone else has the same right to X as they do. Or things will get ugly.

What kills me is that I approached Boss Lady and told her that regarding Thanksgiving and Christmas, she can actually work me a double shift on both days, so that one extra person in our department can have the day off on each of those days and spend time with their families - since I celebrate neither. All I really need is 20 minutes to call my mom, dad, kids, and brothers.

So not only did I request a holiday off that few people want and/or need, but I also offered to work extra time on the two holidays everybody wants off so that more people could have that time off.

If she even tries to say selfish to me, I may just punch her in the face. I realize we are understaffed but when I put a TOR in five months in advance and when the approval was also done five months in advance, the agency is duty-bound to give me that time.

Funny thing is, if it had been one or two hours I would have just put up with it, but six? Oh fuck no.

First D&D, now apparently MTG. I wish you guys would pick out some game with less of a time commitment so I could join you sometime. Something in the "easy to pick up, impossible to master" field, like Go, or at least Chess.

To be fair I think our D&D sessions would take less time than a game of Go or Chess if we were all sober and stopped trolling each other so much (but where is the fun in that?).

speed chess, chess by mail, simply pause a game. Obviously that can be applied to magic too, but the other problem with Magic is that it takes a ton of time investment external to the actual gameplay; in building decks, and also probably getting the software to work well...

I mean, I'd prefer go anyway. But I mean, I'll freely admit a lot of it is because I don't feel like reading through rulebooks before I can get started playing.

I got my time off squared away, did some schedule switching and finagling (which is what should have happened to begin with) - but I think Boss Lady is pissed at me for it. Whatever. If I give in and work during approved time off, it will only prove that I'm her bitch. Fu~uck that.

In other news, came home from work to find that someone had parked in my assigned spot. I called the towing company and they said that they don't accept calls from residents. Really? You're going to turn down an opportunity to make money? Fail. So I left a note saying, "Kindly refrain from parking in my spot in the future" and left a message with the leasing office.

Them darn Halloween teenagers keep forgetting to close the front gate. They've seen my dog sitting next to me while I was handing out candy and one would presume the dog wanders about the front yard. I'm glad I've made a habit of always checking if the gate is shut before letting the dog out to do things. Looking for him in the dark would almost be impossible as well as horribly stressful.
