In any case, I was reminded again of why I think talking about culture can be fun, but talking about race will never be for me.

I've been enjoying films from Thailand. While many countries in East and Southeast Asia for course have their differences, they share a lot of similarities too. So when I watch some of them, I often feel a different connection with them that I don't often feel with films from here. That is not to say I don't feel anything for American films. It's more like, when I was at home, my father (from Hong Kong) and my mother (from Cuba) tried to immerse me in Chinese values a lot. But when I went to school, of course I was immersed in American values.

My dad passed away earlier this year. For the last 10 years or so, he basically amassed a shelf of DVDs of Chinese movies I think I'll check out sometimes (though probably not often. He loved wuxia martial arts movies, I'm not into that).

But race...nah, I don't like to talk much about that. There is this online blog called Racialicious that loves to talk about race and pop culture. One time, they had a post about race and expectations about what kinds of music people of color were supposed to listen to. A quick glance at the comments mostly revealed:

"im a black girl and my funny black family looks at me strange when I listen to Mozart!" or "I'm white and when I listen to rap, ppl say I should've been born black. :(" "wut is an Asian guy supposed to listen to?"

Yeah, I clearly don't belong here...

It also gets tiring seeing every single discussion about race turn into "White people vs People of Color" when, as I deliberately included that the person who called me a "Ching Chong Chang" was an Indian or Middle Eastern girl, it's not like only Caucasians are racist.

Not to mention the self-loathing, this verbatim comment from somebody who is probably a lot like BBQ's Kendre "For me, a black African a.k.a. the lowest of the low, the dregs of humanity etc..." Hardly an approachable way of having a discussion...

It's taken me all week to get through a mere 90 pages in this one and I haven't learned anything from it, as the chapter review questions keep confirming.

I know how you feel man. I do listen to hip-hop and R&B just so I can keep up with what is going on, however I have a collection of Classical Crossover, a collection of Rock, and a collection of Pop music. Don't get me started on Dance music though, I think BPM Radio Station is the only reason I keep satellite...

Nah not that so much, really, because I was always a grumpy bitch about people on FFXI but I stopped having him to really dump on so I took it out elsewhere. Plus spending a lot of time on BG made me lose even more patience with things.

I'm happy now. I'm working and I quite like my job, I've got a few friends here now, and I'm not always angry at people on FFXI for being stupid. And after both of us quitting WoW and FFXI, and eventually breaking up, life is actually looking better and better.

I guess living RL really didn't turn out to be all that bad after all.

That is true it did say that. (Then too I skim posts alot so most changes to sigs I miss.)

Back to peeves though: People who talk on cellphones while driving and do not pay attention to the traffic lights. Why are these people always sitting next to a "Right Turn" light when it is green? Then as soon as they drive through it the thing turns red and I get caught by it.
