See I can do okay with level grinding if there's some sort of return. For example, I consider leveling in FFXI to be a grind, but it's worth while, I feel like I learn a lot while partying and there's some good conversation going on and what not. Phantasy Star Universe on the other hand, it requires you to party, but there's no heart in it. You go to a gate, and then select your difficulty, A, B, or C. That's right, they decided they could get away with having four levels if they made "more difficult" versions. But anyway, yeah you'd join in, and there wasn't really a party system, I mean, in FFXI if I'm a WAR I'm expected to get upfront and tank, but in PSU you could just run up and indiscrimantley smash on the enemy. As if that's bad enough, the other areas were all just re-skins of each other (For real, you'd fight a monster with the same shape, just a different color). No one would even talk that much in game, except "You wanna run Dragon again?" That game almost killed MMOs for me.

Yup, exactly. PSO to me, was basically a very cheap knock off of Diablo 2 (minus the fun. I can't believe SEGA had the nerve to CHARGE people to play that BS) Actually, much as I've grown tired of the game, Diablo II STILL kicks the shit out of most cheap MMOs... But iRO... oh lord the horror. First you have to get your Novice to level 10 (the equivalent of going from 1-30 in FFXI, maybe a little more) to get your FIRST CLASS. THEN you have to gain at least 40 levels (you could gain up to 50 for an extra 10 skill levels, but the grind to hit that was awfully bad.) to change to one of the many advanced jobs (2-1 and 2-2) Oh but the fun doesn't stop there. Once you hit 99 (I think that's the cap) you can then start all over as a transcended job class, allowing you to further grind and become one of the godly transcended classes after I believe another 40 job levels (like the Assassin Cross, which is pretty cool actually). And now they've introduced extended job classes. Seriously, Ragnarok pwns the shit out of any MMO I've ever seen in terms of having a ridiculous level grind. See for yourself. http://iro.ragnarokonline.com/game/jobintro.asp I will give them one thing though. They've got some seriously awesome artwork for the classes. Too bad the in game sprites don't look nearly as good and the game is actually just one long ass level grind with the odd fetch quest and PvP. EDIT: Oh yeah, and to make it worse get a load of this: http://iro.ragnarokonline.com/game/JobNinjaSkill.asp Quote:

The PSU forums are a joke. Everyone on there is pretty much a jackass. There's the guy who plays 'Cherry' in game... -_- essentially must think he's the l33t god of the game or something. Heaven forbid you contradict one of the core people, cuz you know, they've been there since PSO LOLZ1!!11one ..yeah, I go there for a daily dose of lulz, or if something massive is going on with the servers, otherwise, I avoid it. I play on the PS2/PC servers, though, and mostly keep to myself for this reason alone. That, and I want the fucking rarz. I need that damn Cat-shaped Mag. x_x

I played PSU when it first came out in Japan with several importer friends, then went to NA for a couple weeks after it came out, then went back to JP and played on and off for like a year till this past October. It was a decent game, but not without its problems. Making items was a real chore, especially pre-expansion where some weapons took upwards of 12 hours to make, and some of the materials needed were a pain to acquire. The leveling wasn't really that bad at all IMO. The thing I really disliked about it was there wasn't much in the way of content, and whenever they added new stuff, it was typically half-assed. Case in point: there was an event on the JP servers that allowed you to travel to the areas from PSO. Were there very many classic PSO enemies? No. They had maybe only a handful and the rest were the other planets. As for PSO, I absolutely loved it and all the wonderful people I met there. It's always held a place in my heart that no other online game has filled.

That is very very true. God help you if you went on the first server in both games, as that's always been a breeding ground.

That forum was terrible. I agree lost lots of bran cells. I only continued to read it to see how it ended. I loved PSO and I agree with DarkEpyon. There is always a place in my heart for PSO. I didnt mind the Level grinding. Only got to level 123 but it was fun playing online i made many good friends. Even so most of my playtime was offline. Then PSU came out lost them all and they all said that they would see me there. But i never showed up. Didnt want the game cause i heard you can only costomize your char online. And i knew if i got it i wouldnt be online. Still kinda want PSU to see it and experience it offline but then again, maybe not.

once you get to chapter 4 in story mode, you get access to extra mode, and all that is is all the online content, offline, so you can make and customize your character there.

The offline mode in the Illuminus expansion was certainly a step-up over the extra mode from the original, even if it was merely the online episode 2 missions. My highest level on PSODC was 141, 200 on GC, and 164 on Blue Burst.
