My mother just might do that much damage to my computer in the time it takes to sit down at it. She has her own computer, but not many useful programs like the MS Office Suite that they oh-so-stingily (is that a word) decided to not include with a home PC anymore. So she comes to use mine.
Her computer: Pit of hell. I have tried fixing it. I have a pretty good grasp on some technical things, enough to fix a minor problem or even some major ones.
It's beyond help. It turns on and it runs, but expect to grow significantly older before you can actually do something on it. She refuses to buy another one, but it's all for the best because in 20 minutes it would be just as fucked as the one she has now.

look up "DamnSmallLinux", or "Puppy Linux", one of them should look great.
Basically, here's how it works.
Step 1: Download .iso
Step 2: Burn iso to disk
Step 3: Turn off PC.
Step 4: Turn on PC, insert disk. Wait for the computer to load the CD-ROM
Step 5: ??????????
Step 6: Computer!
Basically, a full OS with web browser, office programs, games and so on, but practically zero chance of fucking up your hard drive. And as soon as you remove the CD, you're right back to your normal environment.
