I think I've even seen people confuse then and than before.

Yeah, eet reely buggs me when peeple who speak English as a first language don't know basic grammar. I had a friend working on her masters who was taking a science course in which the professor actually spent the first week of class going over stuff like that because so many "young" people today learn how to write on blogs and various forums.

Knowing and using are two different things. However I will agree that many, possibly even most, finishing high school barely qualify as literate.

Today someone did a power point presentation that misused "there;" it should have been "their." How do you get to college level and not know the difference?

Further, how do instructors not feel the need to correct this sort of shit? If students would lose points for grammar errors such as that, then they'd learn something from it and not fuck it up the next time, which would really make me happy.

Well not happy and the world would be 100% perfect, but it would improve the quality of my learning atmosphere.

I find that most Higher Education professors/instructors and whatnot just don't care if you learn how to do it right or not. They're getting paid and that's enough. They leave it entirely up to the student to learn or not. It's not like students aren't exposed to the correct usage of words every day.

Personally I like that type of environment better, but it only really worked when everyone there actually wanted to learn. Now secondary education is expected of you even if you have no aspirations beyond flipping burgers for the rest of your life.

Well the only thing really good about the whole issue is that these are the people I will be competing against for jobs.

So who gives a shit, really, if they know how to spell? When I hand an employer a flawless resume and there are numerous spelling/grammar errors on someone else's, we'll see who gets the job.

I can buy misusing the word once. Maybe you used the other form several times that day and just had it in your head that thats how it was supposed to be. Spell check won't catch it and grammar check picks on so many things I know I usually just ignore it. But when people repeatedly butcher the spelling of a word or continually use the wrong homophone. (fyi, was gonna put homonym there until i looked it up and remembered that homonyms have the same spelling, too.) It bugs me even more when people do it on the internet because there are hundreds of easy to find sites that will tell you exactly what to type.
